Muslim medic in UK: Muslim men "think they have God-given right to beat wives"

Gee, where could they have gotten that idea? The Telegraph, of course, gives no hint as to the answer to that question. Could it have something to do with this?

"Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them." -- Qur'an 4:34

"Muslim men 'think they have God-given right to beat wives', claims female Muslim medic," by Martin Beckford for the Telegraph, November 7 (thanks to Writer Mom):

Fatima Husain, a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology, has told how she sees Muslim women coming for treatment with strangle marks around their necks and bruises on their pregnant bumps.

She also claimed that problems develop because many followers of Islam are fearful of discussing sex, contraception and infertility.

Dr Husain, who works at Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals in Berkshire, told the Muslim News that many women ask to be referred to her specialist clinics because she is a hijab-wearing Muslim, allowing her to discover the true scale of domestic violence in her religious community.

She said: "I've seen injuries on some of my patients that I wouldn't dream would happen to pregnant women.

"I've seen strangle marks, finger marks on their necks and bruises on their pregnant abdomens.

"Domestic violence is supposedly equally divided amongst the various groups but I get the impression it is more common in Muslims.

"Some Muslim men think they have a God-given right to be physically violent to their spouses. I see the result of all this when they are admitted as my patients."...

Wow, I'm shocked. Who knew?

Would that the punching bags would excercise their God Given right to punch back.

The lady is insulting islam. She is an apostate. The first apostate with a hijab I ever heard of.

How could one even began to respect the teachings of a God:

That teaches women have less intelligence then men, (Hadith 1:301),

That women's testimony is worth only half that of a man (Hadith 1:301),

That a women gains salvation by pleasing and obeying her husband (Hadith 1:28)

In paradise man may have many maidens for companions Surah ( 78:33) no companions are promised for women who reach paradise;---- maybe that is a blessing for women given (Surah 4:34)

How can a decent human being respect a God who teaches that women are a major cause of evil and need to be kept under control.

A God that gives such power to men over women is a false God.

No decent man, or women should ever follow such a God.

"Some Muslim men think they have a God-given right to be physically violent to their spouses."

Well, they do.

What's the problem?...Allah wills all these favors to Islamic women...children too.

Tabari records that Allah created women stupid because of what Eve did in the Garden. He also made them bleed once a month as punishment.

So Allah giving Mohammadans permission in the Quran to beat their wives, and their pregnant bumps, is just consistent with good Mohammadism.

It's really simple...Allah want's muslimah's to be beaten into submission...

If that's not the case, why did he create the tooth brush?

Gee, Dr. Husain, Ayann Hirshi Ali noticed the same thing when she worked as an interpreter for the Dutch government. She discovered that all of the women who were being physically assaulted by their husband were married to Muslims! Shocking isn't it!

Gosh, all those Muslim men must be "misunderstanders" of Islam, huh?

That's why we can ignore that pesky sura Islamophobes keep quoting.

Who knew a hijab-wearing Muslim could be an Islamophobe?

Yeah lets appease the Muslims, lets not single them out, not all Muslims support terrorism. I wonder what they have to say about this! It makes me sick.

So what else is new?

Last month a muslim woman in the North of England was awarded £90,000 ($180,000) against her Town Council for failing to protect her against her own family. School, Hospital, Police and Social Services files all recorded for 20 years that her family were mistreating her. But they did nothing for fear of being called racist.

However the Town Council are said to be suing her family for the money. What the chances are of them getting it I cannot say.

If she worked in the US she would be required to report all these cases to social services.

"I've seen ... bruises on their pregnant abdomens."

Explains quite a bit, doesn't it?

"Domestic violence is supposedly equally divided amongst the various groups but I get the impression it is more common in Muslims.

"Some Muslim men think they have a God-given right to be physically violent to teir spouses. I see the result of all this when they are admitted as my patients."

I'm not sure how much Fatima Husain knows about the Qur'anic basis of such violence, but I think she's a brave woman for speaking out. Dr. Husain surely must know that saying such things out loud is not only considered "politically incorrect" (even--or maybe especially--for a fellow Muslim like herself), but can also be quite dangerous.

Of course, domestic violence does exist in every group--but only in Muslim societies is it sanctioned--by custom, by human authority, and--supposedly--by the word of God.

Here's something from Geraldine Brooks book on women in Islam, "Nine Parts of Desire" (1994; paperback 1995).

Towards the end, after discussing an 'honor' murder that took place in the UK in the early 1990s, Brooks writes (p. 231 of the Anchor paperback edition):

"In a British study of family violence completed not long after Afaf's death {that is, the death of a Sudanese Muslim woman, murdered by her Muslim husband, in Britain - dda}, the researchers found that women married to men of Muslim background were eight times more likely to be killed by their spouses than any other women in Britain."

Got that everyone? Muslim men are EIGHT TIMES more likely to kill their wives, than are Christians, atheists, Sikhs, Hindus, you name it.

(And that's just the stats on men killing wives; don't let's start thinking about the stats on daughters, sisters, nieces, cousins, even mothers and aunts, who are also cold-bloodedly murdered on the 'altar' of Muslim male 'honor'...).

If a Muslimah woman has eight times the chance of being killed, I wonder what the number is for just getting beat up?

Probably close to 100% since it's okay...Allah said so.

I had something disturbing happen that reminds me of this. I heard Daniel Pipes speak at Berkeley a couple of weeks ago, and took a cab back with a friend since it was late.

My friend started chatting with the driver--it turned out he was from Afghanistan. Except for criticising US foreign policy, he seemed like a fairly nice guy.

Well, my husband and I got the same driver coming back from a concert the day after Halloween. The driver was quite friendly, reminding me that I had been in his cab a few weeks previous. It seemed fine.

On learning that my husband was--well, my husband--his demeanor started to change. He started to talk exclusively to my husband. This is not uncommon with Muslim cab drivers--I didn't pay much attention at first.

Then I realized that he was emphasizing that I had been out with another man [my platonic friend, who is also gay], and that I paid the fare [my friend had paid for dinner, I was reciprocating]. The driver didn't just mention this in passing--he said it over and over again, clearly disapproving.

I was horrified. Not only was it totally unprofessional and none of his damn business, but it occurred to me that if I was married to a different sort of man--the sort of man the cabbie seemed to think he was--I would be in for a very ugly time of things when we got home.

Later, my husband rather made light of this--agreeing that the man's behavior was unprofessional, but chalking it up to "culture". He also felt that if I was married to the sort of man the cabbie envisioned, that I would be in trouble in any case (this is true).

Still, I can't help but think of those Muslim cabbies in Britain who delivered Muslimahs trying to escape violent husbands back to their abusers.

What a creepy experience, gravenimage. Did you contemplate reporting him to the cab company?

gravenimage...I lived in Berkeley for seven years.

In all that time, I never took a cab anywhere.

But I drove a cab for a while in another location...
I could tell you stories about that...Haha...

If a cab driver acts in an unprofessional manner, get the cab drivers name, that should be in plain sight on his cab permit, cab number, and note time. Call cab company and complain...An unhappy customer means more business for the competition...Usually, but not always, the company cares...
I have known drivers to get fired for less than what your driver said...

Muslim men do not think they have a God given right to beat women. They know they have a God ordered religious mandate to beat women. To defy the recited direct word of Allah is unpardonable and apostasy. This defiance demands death.

Duh Swami and I'm No Dhimmi,

Yes, I should report him. This might not be as easy as it once was, though--it used to be that someone simply worked for Yellow Cab or Vetran's Cab--it was very clear cut. Now--for reasons I'm only dimly aware of--not only has there been a proliferation of tiny companies with just one or two cabs which are often dispatched by larger companies, but venerable Yellow Cab has splintered into Oakland Yellow Cab, Alameda Yellow Cab, Airport Yellow Cab, etc.--even though they are all just marked "Yellow Cab".

I always used to check the cab company when getting into a taxi, in case of lost items or other issues. After spending too much time on a fruitless effort to try to find the ultimate dispatcher of a cab some years ago, I seldom even bother now. I don't remember this latest driver's cab company--except that it was different both times (cabs were different colors), and he was at stands at different BART stations.

In addition, since cab licenses are expensive and hard to come by, when someone does get a license, it is often in use 24-hours-a-day, usually driven by relatives of the actual license holder. (Once I was in a cab in San Francisco, with its picture ID prominently displayed--the driver was least 30-years younger than the man in the picture--I suppose it was the picture of Dorian Gray!) Seriously, though, the police know this is illegal, but consider it a very low priority.

Up until a few years ago, cab drivers in the area were a pretty diverse bunch--now I would say almost 90% of them are Muslim. Most of the non-Muslim drivers are older cabbies who have been driving for years.

I don't drive--I mostly take transit or do a lot of walking, but late at night (when the buses stop running), in inclement weather, or if I'm transporting something heavy, I do take a taxi.

I've never been denied service, like some of the accounts I've heard about people with alcohol or dogs--but I have had some unpleasant experiences before this. I had a driver bitterly complaining when I was bringing a cat to the vet--asking what sort of animal it was, if it could get out of its cage, how I would compensate him for damage to his cab--and all this was odd, because my cat was quiet and in a secure carrier, while his cab was unbelievably filthy.

Being asked right off the bat "where are you going without your husband?" has become so common I almost don't notice it anymore (this by people who have no idea whether I am married or not). Once I was told by a driver, "your husband will not be happy that you are out so late" (this was at about 7:30 at night, when it was still light out!)

Have other JW readers had bad experiences?

"So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded"

So, Allah considers Muslim women who do not report rapes, beatings, and bad treatment by their Muslim husbands to the police to be good women...Allah really hates it when his secrets are revealed....
