It is the first time the gangs are believed to have operated across the border.The nuns had been carrying out humanitarian aid work in the village of El Wak when they were kidnapped by armed men and taken into Somalia, Somali media sources said.

Looks like these aid worker are providing a valuable community service, after all. There simple presence has created a cottage industry of kidnap and ransom. See, this way, they don't have to stoop so much for lowly financial handouts, but can make an honest to goodness islamic living. It's just another career like maritime piracy, and helps with their self-esteem. Wouldn't muhammad be so proud of his industrious slaves.
Why did Somali Muslims -- the truest of true believers -- go into neighboring Kenya to kidnap some nuns? Oh, because they had run out of Christian aid workers to kill in Somalia itself.
For the past five years, you see, Muslims in Somalia have been attacking and killing all those who to them are "the enemy" -- that means Christians, engaged in the vocation of charity. For charity from Christians must be a trick, must be suspect.
The most famous example is that of Antonella Tonini, who gave 33 years of her life working to help Somalis, and for her pains was killed in 2003:

Annalena Tonelli, 60, was shot about 8 p.m. Sunday by a man who had been hiding in the shadow of a tree, waiting for her to emerge from the hospital in Borama, the official said.
"The man fired two rounds from a pistol at her forehead," said Abdulkadir Suleman Ali, who spoke by telephone from the town in northwestern Somalia.
The motive for the killing was not known. The gunman escaped and no suspects have been detained, Ali said.
Colleagues and residents expressed shock at the brutal slaying of a figure beloved for her dedication and closeness to her adopted home. Tonelli's work was all the more remarkable because she was independent, raising her own money and running her own programs. Most aid workers in Africa represent established organizations.
Ruud Lubbers, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said his agency was devastated by Tonelli's death, which came just months after he presented her with the $100,000 Nansen Refugee Award in recognition of her work.
"She dedicated her life to helping others, carrying out her noble mission in remote, difficult places little noticed by the outside world," Lubbers said in a statement. "We mourn the loss of a truly great woman."
A small crowd gathered around Tonelli's hospital as news of the her death spread. She was supposed to have inaugurated a new wing on Monday, Ali said.
"Everybody in Borama liked her for her Somaliness," said Abdisalan Jama Gahayr, a doctor at the hospital. "I worked with her for seven years and her temper never changed, even during the difficult times."
Tonelli had worked with Somalis in Somalia and neighboring Kenya for more than three decades, setting up clinics to fight tuberculosis and creating awareness about AIDS (news - web sites) as well as about the harmful effects of female circumcision.
A lawyer by training, she even saw to it that she had the right education for her mission, earning degrees in tropical medicine, community medicine and disease control, the U.N. refugee agency said. She was fluent in Somali.
Tonelli had been in Borama since 1996, using donations from friends and family to set up the 200-bed hospital for tuberculosis patients. The town, 580 miles northwest of Mogadishu, is in the breakaway region of Somaliland."

I think NBC wants to warn us of the dangers of Christian fundamentalists. However, Pat Robinson is no Jim Jones.
The media promotes this idea of moral equivalence, as if James Dobson is more of a threat to world peace than OBL.

I realize that what Gahayr is saying here is heartfelt, and probably refers to her respect for Somalis, treating them as equals, and adopting some of their superficial cultural norms.
But he is wrong. Dedicating virtually your entire adult life to work under difficult and dangerous conditions to help the most vulnerable members of a faith not your own has nothing to do with "Somaliness". It is, in fact the absolute inverse of "Somaliness", and of "conservative" Islam in general.
These latest kidnappers probably did have to cross over into Kenya because even selfless Western aid workers have largely gotten the message that working in Somalia is just too dangerous.
You know when a place is the very definition of Hell--when even the aid workers pull out.
Keep all aid workers out of Muslim countries.

Just to clarify the story about the murder of Ms Antonelli. she was working in Somaliland( NOT Somalia) where she was loved and respected by the people she helped. She and a British couple who were teaching in a High school in Somaliland were gunned down by Islamist murderers from Somalia.

The Somaliland police tracked down the murderers and arrested them in 2005. They were convicted of murder and sentenced to death by hanging. But the families of the three victims and their lawyers petioned the somaliland authorities for leniency so their sentences were commuted to life.
The comrades of the killers have just hit Somaliland killing 20 people. Maybe that leniency should be reconsidered now..

Funny. I always thought it was Somalis who were getting kidnapped, enslaved, and brought to Kenya. That's what every single Somali immigrant, with the exception of Ayaan Hirsi Ali, has come here claiming. Who would have thought that Muslims of all people would project their own intolerable deeds onto others? They're the ones kidnapping and enslaving people. What's next?
