Something about "cartoons." "Russian Newsweek warned for 'insulting' Muslims," from the Associated Press, November 18:
MOSCOW (AP) — Moscow prosecutors say they have warned the Russian-language edition of the Newsweek magazine for allegedly insulting Muslims. The Moscow Prosecutor's Office says the magazine published two stories that could be "insulting or humiliating" to Muslims. It said Tuesday on [an?] article also included one of the 2005 Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
The magazine published the stories on Muslims in the European Union in late October. It could not be immediately reached for comment. About 20 million Muslims live in Russia...
I find U.S. Newsweek insulting on a daily basis but no one seems to care about that. If I started setting off some bombs over it (which i wouldn't) then maybe they would stop printing such insults.
Do 20 million Muslims live in Russia, or rather the former Soviet Union?
Alexon: Roughly 20 million Muslims live in Russia, yes, and their proportion of the population is increasing rather dramatically.
As for the story, however, should we find it absurd or astonishing?
Absurd because it shows how little Russians value basic freedoms such as free speech.
Astonishing because this is a nation that has a large historical tradition with combating Islamic nations such as the former Ottoman Empire for centuries.
"The magazine published the stories on Muslims in the European Union in late October. "
Must have been stories about how Muslims have become such model citizens..or not...
Not Russia, too! They dishonor the memory of the children of Beslan and of all those young Russian soldiers who perished in Afghanistan at the hands of murderous jihadists.
Russia needs, instead of this careful tiptoeing around the feelings of Muslims, to recapture the zip and sizzle that went into the apocryphal 'reply from the Cossacks to the Ottoman Sultan' (who had, seemingly, demanded their surrender or conversion to Islam).
In the version shared here at this website by 'silvester' two years ago, with his caveat "it is still not certain whether this reply was actually sent or is a literary creation, but it sure hits the spot", it goes as follows:
"The [Christian] Kozaks of the Dnieper to the Sultan of Turkey:
"Thou Turkish Satan, brother and companion to the accursed Devil, and companion to Lucifer himself, Greetings!
"What the hell kind of noble knight art thou? The Devil voids, and thy army devours.
"Never wilt thou be fit to have the sons of Christ under thee: thy army we fear not, and by land and on sea we will do battle against thee.
"Thou scullion of Babylon, thou wheelwright of Macedonia, thou beer-brewer of Jerusalem, thou goat-flayer of Alexandria, thou swineherd of Egypt, both the Greater and the Lesser, thou sow of Armenia, thou goat of Tartary, thou hangman of Kamenetz, thou evildoer of Podoliansk, thou grandson of the Devil himself,
" thou great silly oaf of all the world and of the netherworld and, before our God, a blockhead, a swine's snout, a mare's ___, a butcher's cur, an unbaptized brow,
"May the Devil take thee!
"That is what the Kozaks have to say to thee, thou basest-born of runts! Unfit art thou to lord it over true Christians!
"The date we write not for no calendar have we got; the moon is in the sky, the year is in a book, and the day is the same with us here as with thee over there, and thou canst kiss us thou knowest where!” END.

Now THAT is something.
An outsider's view of Russia's long and bitter struggle with the Turkish Muslims is summed up in English in the song 'Abdul, the bulbul Ameer', describing a fight to the mutual finish between 'Ivan Petru[f]ski Skivah', and 'Abdul, the bulbul Ameer'; the song exists in various versions,
as you can see from these two 'takes' (note that the second, more elaborate version neatly captures the difference between Muslim and non-Muslim culture, by representing the Russian as skilled in music as well as in war)

but always they manage to kill each other.
A thoroughly un-PC song and perhaps worth bringing to mind.
We do not need Russia going all totalitarian on Muslims. Then we will be crawling with Chechen terrorists (rebels!) to whom we gave asylum. No, we need democratic nations to use their laws to ban Islam and outlaw its practice - starting with stopping Muslim immigration, then with deporting those those who support Sharia - and for them to do it in compliance of the UDHR. Islam and the UDHR will always come into conflict, so ultimately nations can tolerate either one or the other, as we're seeing in Britain, which has thrown the UDHR out the window. My money's on Italy first. Maybe India.
At the risk of repeating myself for the millionth time, what DOESN'T offend or humiliate a muslim?
I think back to numerous Russia-related comments on this website in the last couple of years.
Statements like "Russia is our friend . . . why do you want to provoke Russia . . . Russia is a valuable ally in a war against Jihad . . ." etc. etc. etc.
Russia will not assist in the defense of Western values because Russia does not subscribe to Western values.
Russia wants the jihadists to take us down a couple of pegs.
I'm glad we no longer hear the drivel on this site (in the comments, not in the posts) about how "helpful" Russia is.

Could be pay back, because those pesky Brits stopped the Ruskies from taking Constantinople
Hmm. 20 million Muslims out of apopulation of 141 million - or one in seven.
So with the Muslim population doubling every generation, that means two out of every seven Muslim in 25 years, and four out of every seven Muslim in 50 years. And Russia has a massive nuclear arsenal. God help the class of 2060.
