MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Islamist insurgents whipped 32 people in Somalia on Saturday after arresting them for taking part in a traditional dance in rebel-held territory south of the capital Mogadishu.
Fighters enforcing a strict form of sharia law have been slowly advancing on the city, raising the stakes in their two-year rebellion and undermining fragile U.N.-brokered peace talks to end 17 years of chaos in the Horn of Africa nation.
Last month, they stoned to death a young woman accused of adultery in the rebel-controlled southern port of Kismayu.
Islamist spokesman Sheikh Abdirahim Isse Adow said those arrested had been warned several times against dancing.
"We arrested 25 women and seven men who were dancing near Balad (town). We released them after whipping them. We warned them many times, but they wouldn't listen," he told Reuters.
"The dancing of men and women together is illegal and totally against Islam. We neither killed them nor injured them, but only whipped them according to the Islamic law," Adow said.
How magnanimous.
Now why would we want to let them into the United states or Europe?

Whipping is injuring, but they probably defined "injury" as permanent, like cutting off hands or feet.
There seem to be an inordinate number of stonings and floggings going on in Somalia. It takes the biscuit right now for the most brutal Islamic/Sharia resurgence in the region. Where are all the Human Rights campaigners demonstrating against this monstrous situation? They are too busy condemning Israel for fabricated abuses. Oxfam was once again accusing Israel of pushing Gaza towards a humanitarian catastrophe while ignoring these atrocities in Somalia. Absurd and despicable.

And you're right that it's probably worse in Somalia in terms of Sharia/hudood brutality, because it's just wackjob vigilante 'justice.' At least in Saudi Arabia and Taliban Afghanistan there is a legal process, no doubt quite corrupt, but still in existence. There is time for an interational outcry over women getting killed for being raped or boys being hanged for homosexuality. In Somalia they just gang up on you and it's a big, bloodthirsty spectacle.
Islam's destruction of indigenous and native culture is excruciatingly disturbing to liberal Islamophiles. Study up on it and make them squirm. Indonesia is a prime example of this slow and insidious crushing of the dazzling variety of art, dance, music, costume and custom on its 1,000 islands. The oppression of the gypsies of Iran, the Southern Sudanese etc etc. The list can fill pages and it is going on now.

We have a number of outstanding examples of sharia paradise now: Somalia, Iran, Gaza, Sodomy Arabia and the "tribal" province of Waziristan. These are places where Islam rules without interference, true Islamic self determination. Why are they such unmitigated political, social and economic failures? Islam has had a millennium and a half to get it right. As an ideology upon which to build a society it has failed, it continues to fail, and will forever fail. It causes misery and horror for all who have the misfortune to fall under its yoke, whether by birth or conquest. The failure of Islam is self-evident and as manifest as the sun. Why is Mankind so reluctant to exterminate it from the planet? We expunged other failed ideologies such as the cult of the Nazis and the martial religion of Imperial Japan.
On this one I think I agree with Putin, who remarked in the wake of the slaughter of the innocents of Beslan, that we are weak. Then many more will die. Many more will suffer and many more will be enslaved...until we rise up as our ancestors rose up, and gird our loins and steel our nerves, and begin to fight for our lives and the lives of our families and our neighbors and our nation and our civilization and to honor the sacrifice of our ancestors who gave their blood and treasure to defend us against the scourge of Islamic imperialism. For the present generation it will prove to be the Good War. It won't be long now. Time to prepare.

The difference here should be obvious to everyone. Western law does not condone this behavior either. When we learn of it, we prosecute.
On a broader note: this kind of sick behavior by one man in Austria is not related to the issue of whether men and women should dance together. I simply don't follow your logic.
We in the West do not feel that religion should enforce behavior. Religion should advocate moral, modest, and ethical behavior. However, it should not enforce it.
This is where we disagree. I do not think Priests, Ministers, Rabbis, Monks or Imams should dictate law. Apparently many predominantly Islamic nations feel otherwise. This immoral and barbaric whipping incident is the outcome. Nobody was acting immorally except according to an interpretation of some religious police.
I find this barbaric punishment abhorrent. If you had a shred of decency, you would too. It is totally out of proportion to the crime.
The world is not big enough for a large scale supremacist cult that thinks it is qualified to impose itself on everyone else. Many of your fellow believers will die painful deaths as others defend themselves against such arrogance. The West has done this before, though we're not proud of it (ask the Japanese whether they still think of their Emperor as a deity). It will happen again if there is no other alternative.

A well regarded western news media outlet (be it print, radio, television, or whatever) would not bother to indicate the religion of a person who is this sick.
You assume he is Christian. I don't see why it is relevant to the discussion. Would it be different if he believed in Flying Spaghetti Monsterism?
As for the Ottoman Empire, it fell apart 90 years ago with the Armistice of Mudros. They are not here right now to mete these punishments, so why cite them?
Today, most Western Countries do not advocate Capital Punishment in civil society. Most do not think Capital Punishment fits the definition of cruel or unusual punishment.
Even Jewish tradition indicates a very sincere caution against using it unless one is absolutely certain the act of murder took place, that the person was warned immediately before committing the act, and that he replied that he knew, and he was going to do it anyway and that there were at least two witnesses independent of those who gave the warnings. Anything less than that golden standard is not cause for capital punishment.
Those who advocate Sharia law would do well to study what their predecessors had figured out long before Islam even existed. If your attitude is meant to be a sample of the best that Islam has to offer, I have no respect for it. A good religion is fair and even minded. A great religion learns from the experiences of others and recognizes righteousness wherever it is found. I see little evidence of either in the Islam I see practiced these days.
