VANCOUVER–Taliban militants, suspected of abducting a Canadian freelance journalist in northern Pakistan last week, are holding her because they think she is a spy, according to officials in the region.No groups have taken responsibility for kidnapping Beverley Giesbrecht, 54, of West Vancouver, along with her translator and a personal assistant.
But Pakistani news reports said militants loyal to Taliban commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur are holding her in North-West Frontier Province.
Kamran Khan, a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan representing North Waziristan, denied media reports the three were abducted for ransom.
"All efforts are being made to secure Giesbrecht's freedom. We are trying our best for her release by co-ordinating with local officials," Khan said in an interview from Peshawar.
"There is not a single incident of kidnapping any journalist for ransom in my region," he added.
Ehsan Ullah, a journalist in Mir Ali, a community about 70 kilometres from Jani Khel where Giesbrecht was abducted, said the Taliban are attempting to confirm that the Canadian woman is a legitimate journalist, and not someone gathering information for U.S. or Pakistan governments.
He said they likely would not mistreat Giesbrecht.
"They might take a couple of weeks to make sure that she is not a spy. There is not a single incident of a woman journalist mistreated by them," he said of the tribes under Bahadur's control.
Khan said the Canadian embassy in Pakistan hadn't contacted him, but he was still working for her release.
Giesbrecht also goes by the name Khadija Abdul Qahaar, which she adopted after converting to Islam. She's a former magazine publisher in British Columbia who produces a website, Jihad Unspun. She was working freelance for Al Jazeera.
Giesbrecht hasn't spent much time living in Vancouver since she converted to Islam in Egypt in 2003. She had travelled to Malaysia, and met Islamic leaders in Asia to conduct interviews for her website following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Glen Cooper, Giesbrecht's close friend in Vancouver, said she is a serious and fearless woman but has a bad back. He said the website has a clear pro-Islamic slant, but he argued she is a reporter with a different perspective, not a propagandist.
"Canadian media and people should support her realizing that she is a Canadian citizen with a Canadian point of view," said Cooper.
Right. Especially now that she is in desperate need of the despised infidel's aid, to rescue her from her coreligionists.

How do they know that she is REALLY a muslim? Why was she traveling in the company, alone, of a male non-relative? A true muslima would not do that. And which male in her family gave her permission to travel in the first place? How do we know that the whole jihad unspun website is not just an elaborate CIA cover story? Maybe jihad unspun is just a honeypot designed to trick loyal mujaheddin into visiting the site where the CIA spies can capture their information to locate them for drone attacks.
If she is a spy, will they lapidate her, saw off her head on video, or just shoot her? What is the sharia punishment for spying?

Oh, well, maybe they'd have pity on her and release her and she'd had her lesson and afterwards wouldn't be out working without being accompanied by her husband/muhrim.

I love this story. Nobody's going to get her because, idiot that she is, she went into the most dangerous part of a very dangerous country. It would $30,000 for a 2-hour search operation, which owuld of course have to be carried out be Special Ops, no less. Even if they located her she would be in a burqa so they couldn't identify her. Canada doesn't even have troops in Afghanistan/Pakistan, do they? Our guys aren't going to save her, inshallah. Reap what you sow, stupid Mohammedan asshat.
jdamn, Canada has had troops fighting in Afghanistan since 2002 and are currently in the Kandahar district, but I doubt they would go after her in Pakistan. She is with the Religion of Peace she so loves. So be it. Allah Akbar!

jdamn my niece's husband who is Canadian had two tours in Kabul, the storys he said about the behaviour of afgan men was disgusting, as they seem to gravitate towards boys to have sex with them. let this Cdn convert get her just rewards, and live among real muslims. l would not send her a cent for anything, she deserves to be where she is. journilism died this year.

An in my opinion she is infortunatly already considered as a very law woman, as she is traveling with no tutor man as required by islam. Tutor means a father, brother, cousin, uncle ... as she has no husband to control her mouvements as she is a muslim woman.

She will be asked such questions before any decision will be made. As muslims has a very complex problem with sex. And many strange contradictions.
True she did a big mistake, to support islamists and to go there but But sincerly I hope nothing bad will happen to her. In fact she is victim of Islam. And I hope she rather will renounce Islam when she will back to Canada, traw the veil, and join Ex-muslims to the battle freedom and dignity.
All women who are supporting islamists are supporting their own enslavers. Infortunatly they all were conditioned and endocrined by their own father or even mother etc... since they were lettle girls. Those women are in really victims of Islam.

Islmic schools and moscques should't exist in Christian land/western countries , given the numerous violations of human rights than are included in the Islamic law (charia), wich is based on the Quran book and hadiths.
And sharia it self shouldnt be practiced, in the UK and elswhere. And those who want Islamic laws should be sent to Saudi arabia or Iran to arrange their matters there.
There are many flights from london to Saudi Arabia or Dubai. And women should have the right to refuse to go there.
For Europe to remain souvereign in the futur only European laws must reign from now.

The Jihad Unspun website is up and running and her articles easily downloaded. It looks like someone has updated the home page since she was abducted. I saw it for the first time a couple weeks ago or so after a news report about her in another publication (Islam Watch?).
From her last letter, Oct. 22:
"...While we have made tremendous progress, Pakistan is now erupting into a full scale war zone. We have been in some very sensitive areas and even Islamabad is now locked down. As foreigners we must leave the country however we do not have the funds to get out. Our visas are expiring and they will not be renewed as the Canadian and British embassies are demanding all foreign national to leave due to the security situation.
Allah knows that I really dislike having to ask but please know how hard we work for Allah. We have managed to get very good material out of the country to our production group but our physical safety is now paramount. I make this personal and urgent appeal to you to send whatever ontribution you can to assist us to return to Canada and Britain (I am Canadian, our other member with me is from Britain and we also have some local Pakistanis who can not leave the country I am afraid). As a woman, I have already had a few close calls in the tribal areas as kidnappers and thieves are running loose even in Peshawar but alhamdulilah Allah has helped us.
This matter is urgent and inshaAllah I can count on our good supporters to help. Again I must apologize for having to make this request but at this time I have no other alternatives. With no family, it is my brothers and sisters that I must turn to for help. Please
This war is coming to each and every Muslim and the Ummah must act as one hand.
