It is good to see a concerted effort to prevent this. Will we one day need such "special teams" in the United States?
"Turkey: Special Teams To Stop 'Honour Killings,'" from ANSAmed, November 17 (thanks to Insubria):
(ANSAmed) - ANKARA, NOVEMBER 17 - A special team will operate in the South Eastern province of Mardin to stop "honor killings", daily Hurriyet reported. "Emergency action teams" formed by the Association for Preventing Honor Crimes and Validating Female Potential (Toder) will be working in 20 villages around Mardin. The team includes the villagés teacher, opinion leader, nurse and reverend. "The team will inform us in case a dangerous event happens in the village and we will contact the related parties; we will have the chance to intervene before an honour killing happens", Zeynep Alkis, president of Toder, said."A total of 1,985 women died from domestic violence in last two years, which makes almost three women a day", Sebahat Balci, a Social Service Expert, said, adding that "in Europe more than a woman per week dies due to the violence from her husband or boyfriend". "One-third of women are exposed to physical violence by her husband at least once in Turkey and domestic violence increases as the income increases and it decreases as education increases," Balci declared. "Another research revealed that 89% of women are exposed to psychological violence and 39% are subject to physical violence, while around 30% of women are victims of domestic violence during their marriage when they are pregnant", the expert revealed. (ANSAmed).
This effort, justifiably lauded by Robert, is apparently the initiative of an Islamist government.
Life is strange.
"A total of 1,985 women died from domestic violence in last two years, which makes almost three women a day", Sebahat Balci, a Social Service Expert, said, adding that "in Europe more than a woman per week dies due to the violence from her husband or boyfriend".
Sebahat - 'honor' killings involve parents killing or conspiring to kill their children. Domestic abuse involves (usually) a husband killing his wife. It's like apples and oranges. Both are fruits, but they come from different trees. I do NOT mean to condone domestic abuse or claim that it is preferable to 'honor' killing.
PS - How many of the European killings that you cite involve Muslim men? Just curious.
"domestic violence increases as the income increases"
I found that very interesting. I mean, my assumption would be the exact opposite.
"...we will have the chance to intervene before an honour killing happens", Zeynep Alkis, president of Toder, said."
It looks good on paper, I'm sure. Unfortunately, most honor killings are spontaneous, spur of the moment crimes, motivated by the Muslim "man's" lack of self control.
Your team will have about two seconds to intervene. Go...
The only way they can find out who is in danger of an honor killing is to go about sticking their noses in everyones business.
I'm sure the village people will appreciate that...
I disagree, though I have no stats to back it up.
I believe honor killings are not driven by anger but by a narcissistic need for approval by one member of the Muslim tribe's "men" from the other male members of the tribe.
It is good to see a concerted effort to prevent this.

Yes--I don't imagine this effort will be very successful, but just seeing any effort along these lines in a Muslim country is heartening. Usually any suggestion of either curbing such crimes, or prosecuting them more vigorously after the fact, is roundly denounced by religious authorities as "un-Islamic". We'll have to see if this also happens in more secular Turkey.

OK--the population of Turkey is a little over 70 million, and the population of the European Union is about 490 million. That means, assuming my figures are correct (I'm rather math challenged)--that a woman is about 145 times more likely to be killed by a male "loved one" in Turkey than in the EU.
And this doesn't take into account a few other factors. For one thing, much violence against women in Europe--just consider the skyrocketing rape statistics--is perpetrated by that continent's burgeoning Muslim population. So, even the European statistics are likely significantly worse than they would be with taking Muslim "honor killings" into account.
Also, this account deals with Turkey--despite the inroads of Islamists in recent years, it is still overall the most secular of Muslim nations. I wonder how much worse the statistics would be from countries that consider themselves more "Islamic"?
Of course, violence against women exists all over the world. But in most societies, especially in the West, most people revile men who beat or kill women, and hold them in contempt. In addition, these crimes are considered serious ones in the West.
In Islam, beating "disobedient" women is enshrined in the Qur'an, and was enthusiastically practiced by Islam's own "Perfect Man", Muhammed.
Murderers are often respected for "protecting the family honor", and are protected by religious authority.
