Alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four co-defendants have told a military judge at Guantanamo Bay they want to confess and plead guilty.The judge at the pre-trial hearing, Col Stephen Henley, said he would question the men to ensure that was their wish.
Mr Mohammed had earlier said he wished to be executed and achieve martyrdom, but had still mounted a defence.
The five accused face the death penalty if convicted of a role in killing 2,973 people in the suicide plane attacks.
No date has been set for the five men's full military tribunal, and their appearance in court on Monday followed hearings held under a judge who resigned last month....
"We all five have reached an agreement to request from the commission an immediate hearing session in order to announce our confessions... with our earnest desire in this regard without being under any kind of pressure, threat, intimidations or promise from any party," Col Stephen Henley told the court.
When asked by the judge if he was prepared to enter a plea of guilty to all the charges should he be allowed to withdraw their motions, Mr Mohammed said "yes".
"We don't want to waste time," he added, according to the AFP news agency.....
At a previous hearing in June, when informed that he faced the death penalty, Mr Mohammed said he had been looking to "be a martyr for long time".
"This is what I want," he stated.
If it were up to me they would get there wish for 'martyrdom' but would be wrapped in pig carcasses as funeral shrouds prior to their executions.

Although this will undoubtedly deprive his defense lawyers of the opportunity to delay indefinitely (and what are they going to do, anyway, after their stint at Gitmo? The economy is in such a slump, they haven't even had time to send out resumes.), his wish should be honored. His mouth must be really watering for those 72 raisins.
The waste of time would be the death penalty...

Maybe we can't deny them the virgins, but we can postpone them until the 'guilty' die of old age.

Well, He's a busy god, he can't think of everything...
As they've attained their goal, for what do they have to live.
On the other hand, life sentencing would an apt penalty as well.
This would take sticking to our guns (a tendency I regretfully see diminishing).
By whatever virtue they have interpreted their deeds, in the eyes of decent people they represent evil.
They will most likely be seen, and most likely already are, as heroes and martyrs. To those of thier devoted, those concepts won't change.
But, hopefuly, decent people will not give sway.
(None of this "religion of peace". I've yet to hear of the Knights of Columbus taking over a plane at sword point and demanding to be flown to Genoa.)
For what's remaining of the ever-shrinking Western World, Eurabia be damned, as it has already damned itself, death is the appropriate penalty.
And, while we're at it; piracy ranges throughout the world' high seas. I'm puzzled why air-piracy doesn't merit the same penalty. (Piracy on the "high C's").

KSM just postponed his plea, trying to make sure that, if he pleads guilty, he will NOT RECEIVE THE DEATH PENALTY!! Guess that whole martyr thing is overblown...what a putz!!
We've wasted far too much time and resources on this guy as it is. Why waste any more taxpayer money on this slime? Giving life imprisonment also means the possibility of parole and, should some future administration in a fit of "compassion" decide he has been "rehabilitated" and should therefore be released, then it would start all over again. Let it end here.

Robert, is there something in the Qur'an or the Hadith about having excessive beards? I know not all jihadists have big beards but many of them do...
Muslim men are supposed to have beards except for Shafi'is. There's scriptural dogma saying that they should, but also some saying that they don't have to, so they have the choice. All other Muslims are supposed to have beards, though. Who has time to shave when you have to epilate your armpits? What I don't get is why they never do anything about their unibrows.

So far this sounds good. An open and prideful admission by the defendants that they acted according to what Islam inculcates, what Islam prompts, and their drawing up of an Islam-based explanation or defense of their acts, will be useful. For them, in their view, and for the rest of us, in ours. Let them declare themselves, and explain themselves, and let them ground their explanation in Islam itself, so as to make clear even to doubters who seek some other "root cause" that the "root cause" can be found in any mosque or madrasa, and consists of the texts of Islam.
Death is the easy way out. These guys want death, but they don't want to be held captive by the infidels. If it were up to me I would put this turd in a concrete box and keep him alive as long as possible. Fifty or so years of his mind, body and soul slowly rotting away in the grey box with no human contact and no entertainment is a suitable punishment.
The Bali bombers also "wished to be executed and achieve martyrdom" but then ran legal appeal after appeal, even a final one to the Indonesian high court claiming that shooting them was a violation of their human rights because death might not be instantaneous. They also threatened that executing them would cause massive riots and backlash. It took 7 years to execute them. For all that time they were proclaiming that they "wished to be executed and achieve martyrdom" while trying to avoid it.
Life. Without Parole. Solitary confinement. No head doilies. No prayer mats. No consideration with regard to the placement of the crapper. No Qur'an.
These fine specimens of Islamic jihad should already have memorized the Qur'an, so why waste taxpayer money? Head doilies and prayer mats are luxuries.
Give them some real martyrdom.
