DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — Police in Bangladesh's capital arrested eight members of a hard-line Islamic group for damaging a large outdoor sculpture of a group of white storks, an official said Sunday.
Alam Badshah, a Dhaka Metropolitan Police official, said the men were arrested late Saturday during the attack in Dhaka's Motijheel commercial district. All eight are members of the little-known Muslim group Ulama Anjumane Al Baiyeniat, he said.
Members of the group, which considers sculptures to be a form of idol worship, clashed with security officials who stopped their attack on the statue, he said.
The men, armed with shovels and hammers, damaged the stone base of the 41-foot (12.5-meter) sculpture of six storks after they were unable to pull it down with ropes, Badshah said.
About 100 members of the group gathered nearby and distributed leaflets encouraging action against anti-Islamic activities, he said.
The melee left several people, including some group members, injured. Two of the detainees were being treated at a hospital, Badshah said.
He said the eight faced charges of creating chaos and attacking security officials.
It was unclear why they chose now to attack the statue, which has stood at a road intersection since 1989.
Mrinal Haque, the sculptor, said the statue had nothing to do with Islam.
"It's a shame, it's an attack on our secular culture ... this is a very innocent artwork," he told The Associated Press by phone. "It's like my child."
Some hard-line Islamic groups in Muslim-majority Bangladesh publicly condemn such sculptures. In October, another group damaged a large statue of mystic poet Lalon Shah outside Dhaka's Zia International Airport.

I can no longer bring myself to laugh at such reports. Now, they just fill me with despair.
Islam's latest version of its 'Golden Age' has been going for nearly forty years and has already reached the stage where it's become impossible to ignore for even one measly day per week.
I feel increasingly weary and fearful for the future.
In America the unemplyed Mohammedans just basically do the same thing all over the Internet and in rl they push for Sharia by seeking to undermine rown v. Board of Education in Topeka, Kansas. This story doesn't bother me because it's not an ancient statue and as far as I know there's really not much worth saving in Bangladesh, nor has there been since the Pakis invaded in 1971.

Why did not the AP reporter do just a little bit more, and actually help to educate readers of the story? Why, that is, did this Julhas Alam not expalin that in Islam, statuary is forbidden, unless it is in some way vandalized. Why did Julhas Alam not quote the famous hadith in which Muhammad is reported to say that he would not enter a house in which there were "dogs or statues" and that this Hadith has been relied on to prohibit, for all time, sculptures and sculpturing?
Now readers will know only that some fanatical or "extremist" Muslims, for reasons we are never given, chose to smash statues of storks. Yet those readers are no closer to understanding the motivation for that destruction, than are readers of any of the accounts of the smashing of the Bamiyan Buddhas, or those who read so much about the murders and mayhem in Mumbai, who are never told about the precise parts of the ideology of Islam that are most relevant. Why didn’t Julhas Alam, who surely must know what Hadith prompted this act, not explain this to readers? Why did AP not insist – or are the editors at AP simply too ignorant of Islam themselves even to realize what information essential to understanding is being consistently left out?

Truer words have never been spoken. How much effort would it take for a politician, military officer, police officer, professor or journalist to properly research Islam?

This where my username, "Gravenimage", comes from. I find the ban on images and music some of the saddest things about Islam.

Oh, wait, I forgot--the murderers, rapists, and pirates--most of them--will be in paradise enjoying their 72 virgins. What a f*cked up creed.
Remember Bamiyan and the Taliban at the Kabul museum, destroying every artwork with human or animal figures that they could find (except for those which the heroic museum director had been able to smuggle out or covertly watercolour over).
And remember, we in the West are inviting these barbarians into our lands in record numbers. What happens when we have "Islamic hardliners" start rampaging through the Louvre or the Vatican? My blood runs cold. What will happen to the great art of the West in "Eurabia"?

I'm typing this in my studio, which is full of paintings, posters, prints, small sculptures, and illustrated books--both my own and those of other artists and illustrators. I don't have to worry about any vicious Mohammedan angels here, either.
