Can Muslims say "Merry Christmas"?

Apparently not. This guarded opinion-piece by a Muslim demonstrates as much by relying on a hadith -- one, however, that is no where near as indicative as others. More telling hadiths report Muhammad saying:

"Do not greet the Jews and the Christians before they greet you and when you meet any one of them on the roads force him to go to the narrowest part of it" [Sahih Muslim B26N5389].

Sahih Bukhari relates Muhammad saying: If Jews and Christians say "Peace be upon you," say only "And on you" -- but do not add the word "peace," which is always included in return greetings to fellow Muslims: "And peace on you" [Sahih Bukhari B26N538].

If simply wishing "peace" upon non-Muslims is problematic, need one ponder long whether or not Muslims should respond with "Merry Christmas" -- a saying that implicitly acknowledges the divinity of Jesus, otherwise anathema to Islam -- to infidel Christians?

Maybe Muslims can simply say "Happy Holidays"? A fatwa addressing this question -- dealing specifically with whether "holidays" has pagan, mushrik, connotations -- is certainly in order.

"Can Muslims say 'Merry Christmas'?" by Mahmudi Asyari and Muizzudin for the Jakarta Post, December 24:

Indonesian Muslims still have very different opinions about wishing someone "Merry Christmas". Some of them believe it is OK to do so, while some others see it differently.

The former group base their opinion on the spirit of religious tolerance and the latter group consider it harmful for the religion and relate their opinion with the forbidden action of mixing one religion with another. This group seems to be dominant in Indonesia.

If "this group" is "dominant" in Indonesia -- for long, the one Muslim nation tauted as most "tolerant" and pluralistic" -- what does this say about the average Muslim nation's views on saying something as simple as "Merry Christmas"?
In defending their opinion, they use a hadith as mentioned in Bukhari: "It [is] related from *Aishah that a group of Jews came to God's Messenger and said, 'as-sam *alayk (death be on you). I understood it and said to them, as-sam wa al-la*nah (on you be death and curse).

God's Messenger said, 'Be calm! O *Aishah, for God loves that one should be kind and lenient in all matters.' I said. 'O God's Messenger! Haven't you heard what they have said?' God's Messenger said, '(Haven't you heard what I have said.) I said (to them), *alaykum (upon you).'" According to them, responding to a greeting with non-Muslims is limited and so is wishing "Merry Christmas"...

Heh! Right! :p

I don't give muslims the time of day and never will! I already have their number!

I DON'T CARE!

BTW: Merry Christmas Robert ;)

Peace and Merry Christmas to you Robert and all here on Jihad Watch.

To the Muslims who adhere to the Hadith: As-sam wa al-la nah.

An infidel Christian

Actually, I like to combine religions. Whenever I see a Muslim walk under the mistletoe, I yell Allahu Akbar, chop his head off, and kiss it. Merry Christmas, Infidel.

A young University of Toronto student wished me a Merry Christmas this morning.
And he is a recently arrived Muslim from Bangladesh.
Just thought i'd put that out there.

The head of the Jamaat-i-Islami Hind organization in India has condemned India's govt for not launching an investigative probe into what he feels was a Hindu conspiracy to frame Muslims for the Mumbai attacks:

http://ia.rediff.com/news/2008/dec/25mumterror-jamaat-slams-chidambaram-for-denying-probe-in-karkares-death.htm

It shows how deeply self-deluded and out of touch with reality Muslims are. This is no different than the allegations that Jews received phonecalls on 9/11 telling them to stay home from work, or that the Twin Towers were brought down by explosive charges planted by US federal agents.

The truth is only one POV were lies have multiple POV's

!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL !!!

Merry Christmas to you, Raymond, although I suspect yours isn't until 6 Jan. if you still follow the Coptic calendar!

Merry Christmas everyone!

No Muslims will never greet you with Merry Christmas or Happy Diwali etc...but only there call sign whatever that is. The intolerant and cult religion of Islam.

And a Merry Christmas to you, Family Values. I follow both dates, as I am a glutton for Christmas.

Hmmm, Raymond, you can gain twice as much weight as everyone else.

Merry Christmas to you Robert, jihadwatch team and everyone on Jihad Watch.

Followers of this lunatic death cult and folowing it to this day 'as-sam *alayk (death be on you). The day the phedophile, mass murderer, rapist Mo decended upon earth peace has disappeared. No wonder they cant wish Peace be upon you.

Raymond, Robert, Marisol & Hugh

A very merry Christmas to all of you and all posters & readers of JihadWatch!

Merry Christmas, from India

Have safe and happy holidays, everyone

I said Merry Christmas to the Paki cashier at the local gas station last night and he said Merry Christmas back to me. Just sayin'...

Well as a matter of Fact a Muslem from the deli just happened to wish me "Merry Christmas" on this fine Christmas Eve here in NYC. He had no problem with it.

Other Muslems have wished me Merry Christmas on Christmas Eve in the past...

I have wished them Happy Rahmadan in the past as well..........

However, I still think Islam is hopelessly flawed.

Merry Christmas everyone!
:-)

Bingo

Me to - the cashier at the supermarket said it to me today without my saying it first. If we are honest we have to be fair.

Merry Christmas everyone.

"A knuckle dragging punum! "

I dont know what a punum is but if your knuckles drag your arms must be really long, I bet you get chosen pretty quickly in pick up bball games

Merry Christmas to all at JW and the JW readers and commenters. Best wishes Robert and Hugh and keep firing on all cylinders.

As a hope for this Christmas, I would ask God to not let the West slip away into Islamic oblivion, as He did with Rome and Byzantine, and to give our leaders the insight they desperately need to understand the danger of the Islamic threat; few western leaders understand it at the moment.

Muslims would never say "Merry Christmas" not on radio, television or newspapers. Muslims are the most mean spirited animals when it comes to non Muslim holiday.

It is surprising to me that the Muslim attack on US happened on 911 and not on December 24th (highly traveled day) - they don't care about non Muslim holidays - they hate non Muslims holidays and even show their anger obviously with no diplomacy, political correctness or shame.

Over 100-Million Muslim losers attacked 2-million people Israel (back in 1973) on Israel's most sacred holiday, Yum Kippur. They were shouting "Allahu Akbar" but Allah was crushed when God helped Israel crush Islam and their Allah.

This is when their hate for Israel and the Jews went exponentially thru the roof.

stickman

Don't blame you! I had to look it up on google myself. The first definition in the Urban dictionary says,

"Hebrew for "face", usually expressed with affection."

There are 5 different contexts but one is "pretty or cute little dog". Given the muslims feelings about dogs I guess that is the one he meant.

Incidentally you are right about the ball games but I hated them.

Repeating myself but - I promised him I would sign off ALL my future posts using it so like a good kuffur I have to keep my word.

My Muslim friend in Sudan rang up to wish me Merry Christmas.
He dreams of running away from Sudan, but not from Islam. I am trying to make him understand that it is better if the Western world doesn't become Islamic because if it does, there will be nowhere in the world worth dreaming of running away to. it will all be one big Islamic mess.
One-world government? What a nightmare!

Sahih Bukhari relates Muhammad saying: If Jews and Christians say "Peace be upon you," say only "And on you" -- but do not add the word "peace," which is always included in return greetings to fellow Muslims: "And peace on you" [Sahih Bukhari B26N538].

I'm in a debate at LGF2 about how muslims will use word play to pretend to sound peaceful and friendly to non-muslims, while keeping firm to their intolerant faith.

Some examples:

"Islam forbids killing innocents."

"Muslims condemn terrorism."

And the often quoted verse 5:32 (without contextualizing it with verse 5:33)

This hadith is just another example.

Yesterday l was doing last minute shopping and bought a Montreal Canadiens hokey shirt for my nephrew from a women how appearded Hindu, and she wished me a Merry Christmass, and l then wished her a Merry Christmass and Happy New Year, l did ask her if she was Hindu and she was surprised and said yes, where she seemed genuinely pleased l knew she could not of been a muslim.

Mohammadans who return a 'Merry Christmas', are among the 10% who never get the word...

The question is...Do they really mean it???

Do they mean it? HELL NO!

A Muslim once wished me a Merry Christmas and I returned with a Happy Holidays. He went ballistic thinking I've said the other thing. So now if any Muslim says Merry Christmas to me or whatever, I just say 'Thank you'!

If Jews and Christians say "Peace be upon you," say only "And on you" -- but do not add the word "peace," which is always included in return greetings to fellow Muslims...
-- Sahih Bukhari Book 26 No. 538 (sacred Islamic scripture)

And there in lies the conundrum. No peace.

Truthbetold: That was what I said to my Muslim friend; "Thankyou", as if he were saying "Happy birthday" to me. Seems right. But what do you men "the other thing"? Hannukah?

JW, Robert, Hugh or anyone else more familiar with hadith designations than me HELP!

I recently purchased the hadith collections of Sahih Muslim (7 volumes) and Sahih Bukhari (9 volumes) from DarusSalam Publications Inc. Bukhari is translated by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Muslim is translated by Nasiruddin al-Khattab.

The vol., book and hadith numbers do not match those mentioned in the article above.

The online sources of hadith that I am familiar with (searchtruth.com and USC MSA site) do not match in numerical designations to the article above, or to my collections of hadith.

The online sources appear to have a completely different hadith numbering system than my collection but the book numbers only seem to be off by 4.

I have noticed that in “The Truth About Muhammad” by Spencer, the Bukhari hadith referenced in his book DO match those in my collections.

Finally I have noticed that the NAMES of the books of hadith appear the same and the content appears to be similar even though the book numbers are different.

So, would it not be more helpful to always mention the book name as well as the number?

Any assistance to help this Kafir navigate through the swamp of the hadith would be GREATLY appreciated.

"But what do you men "the other thing"? Hannukah?"

The unmentionable Merry ******mas.

Last night when I was on my way to my niece's house I had to wait while the gate guard checked her address before he would let me in. He was Muslim and when he lifted the gate I wished him a Merry Christmas and he got a big smile on his face and said something like, same to you.

There is something undeniable about the joy that comes on Christmas Day. You can feel it permeating the air. There is no equivalent to it in Muslim. Remember, there is no fun in Islam. There is no laughter in Islam. Perhaps that is why the gate guard appreciated the sentiment.

But really, who cares what Muslims say or don't say when it comes to Christmas? When someone goes to all the trouble to whine about nothing and then manufacture supposed "hate" crimes to insure they are looked upon as victims, I think their standing in the community diminishes and like a spoiled child, we should not give in to their rants but spank them soundly and put them to bed. People who do these things walk around with a big "L" on their foreheads and they should not be given the time of day, much less make us wonder if we should greet them with a Merry Christmas blessing. The blessing is ours to give, and if there is any group that needs it badly it is Muslims.

Merry Christmas everybody!

Thank you, Gravenimage! Happy New Year to you too!
