GAZA– Hamas leaders said on Sunday they did not expect to extend a six-month ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip when it expires this week, although it remained unclear whether this would mean an immediate surge in violence.

In an interview in Damascus, where he lives in exile, Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal told Al-Quds Television: “We in Hamas, and in most of the factions, think that after December 19 the truce ends and it will not be renewed.”
He complained that Israel had not eased its blockade on the territory, as Hamas had hoped when it agreed to end rocket fire.
“We are studying the issue of the calm with our allies ... and, God willing, we will reach a vision within the coming days,” Meshaal said.
“But I believe the general mood, among the people and among the factions is against extending calm because the enemy did not abide by its obligations.”
A Hamas official in Gaza, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the group would issue a formal statement in a few days that the ceasefire would end.
“Hamas’s decision is not to renew calm after it expires,” the official said.

Israel needs to be the first member state of the UN to formally recognize the state of Palestine (a.k.a. Gaza). As soon as Palestine is admitted to the UN as a nation, the provisions of Article 51 of the UN Charter will apply. Article 51 would give Israel the universally recognized right to defend itself against any aggression emanating from a hostile neighbor and such defense could be in the form of any and all force necessary to suppress the aggression utterly and it can be done with complete impunity under international law. If it would become necessary to reduce the entire state of Palestine to pile of smoldering rubble, a la Tokyo and Berlin in 1945, Israel would be free to do so under international law.

Has NATO membership ever been proposed for Israel? If so, why wasn't membership granted? If not, why not?
NATO's mandate has changes over the years. At first, it's purpose was to keep the peace in Europe by keeping the US in, the Russians out and the Germans down, as I believe Anthony Eden expressed it. The peace still needs to be kept in Europe but the threat has changed. And Israel knows, or should know, better than most the implications of that threat.
Of course there is the issue of NATO credibility, the potential or even likely unwillingness of Western political leaders to take the heat from irate Moslem money masters. But as a concept, it amkes more sense to defend that which is akin to ourselves than it does to bring democracy to entire peoples that view democracy not only with contempt but as satanic.
