Islamic organizations use billboards to reach out, educate

More on Muslim attempts to "reach out and educate" Americans here. "Islam using billboards to reach out, educate," by Sherri Day for the Tampa Bay News, December 13:

SEFFNER — The billboard sits along the eastbound side of Interstate 4, just west of McIntosh Road. But unlike other signs hawking fast food joints, gas stations or amusement parks, this one poses a spiritual query:

"Purpose of Life? 877-WHY-ISLAM ..."

If you call the number you'll reach an office in Somerset, N.J. run by the Islamic Circle of North America, a Muslim advocacy group based in Jamaica, N.Y. Once on the line, callers can ask just about anything.

The signs with catchy phrases and images is part of a national campaign by the nonprofit group to promote discussion about Islam and debunk stereotypes about Muslims. For Ramadan, they wrapped Chicago city buses with WhyIslam signs and put up ads on New York City subway cars, which sparked some controversy.

Last week, 24 billboards went up in 18 cities, including Orlando, Portland, Ore., and San Antonio, Texas. Many of them were in cities that do not have large Muslim populations.

"We felt, as American Muslims, our voice was not being heard," said Naeem Baig, the group's secretary general. "We have very limited access to the media, being a nonprofit without big pockets. We felt this was the best way to reach out to the general public."

The billboard in east Hillsborough County, which went up a week before Thanksgiving, is the first of its kind in the bay area for the group.

Tampa was not among ICNA's target markets, but Bilal Farooqi, a 23-year-old recent college graduate, requested the billboard and agreed to sponsor it.

He felt the need to take action after another nonprofit last fall distributed "Obsession," a controversial DVD about radical Islam. That group mailed it and placed it in 58 newspapers around the country, including the St. Petersburg Times.

Farooqi asked his friends and several adults at the Islamic Society of Tampa Bay Area mosque in Tampa to help him raise the $1,900 needed to design the ad and rent the billboard in Seffner until the end of December.

Despite it's clearly spiritual message, Farooqi says it is not about gaining converts, but about education.

"It's a billboard, and you only get three or four words to make it catchy," Farooqi said. "I couldn't think of anything more catchy than that. If we just said 'Islam is a religion of peace,' people aren't going to really be as intrigued by it."

More like "People won't buy that anymore."
Despite his intentions, Farooqi worries he will be stung by the very attitudes the billboard campaign is trying to dispel.

A 2007 graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Farooqi frets that future employers may one day learn of his association with the campaign, misunderstand its purpose and deny him jobs.

Still he feels the message is more important.

"We don't want everyone to just have this negative stereotype about Islam," he said. "We're just trying to do our part to get people to see that there is another side to the story."[...]

Most often, callers ask about the Prophet Mohammed, the supposed oppression of Muslim women, and the basic tenants of Islam. A fair amount call to rant.

"I had one call of 90 seconds of continuous, nonstop curses, cursing God, Muslims, Islam," said Ahmed, who is an imam at a New Jersey mosque. "But I just kept silent and waited for him to stop."

After the caller finished his rant, Ahmed said he talked to the man for half an hour about Islam and agreed to send him some brochures about the faith...

More like destruction of life why Islam? Looking at what devastation Islam has perpetrated is unimaginable. Great thriving civilization turned into chaos and despair. Life in Islamic society is a stranglehold with no creativity but only violence and oppression of humanity is paramount.

These ads are an abomination.

You know what would be cool? Maybe a bunch of us could get together and pool our resources to buy billboard space in, let's say...Saudi Arabia? Right along the pat...road there. The message wouldn't even have to be religious...heck, it could be about painting, women's rights, JW or toilet paper!

I'm good for a few hundred $$$. I can setup a VoIP phone just about anywhere and a few of us could volunteer to staff it.

Even if they cursed us out in absolutely beautiful, poetic Arabic, I wouldn't hang up on them. Nope. I'd do the right thing and listen, followed up by an immediate, air-freighted pallet of TP and air freshener.

Whaddy'a say? Substitute any country that employs the Shar'ia if SA declines the offer -- we're good to go, right?

OK, thanx everyone!

As I've mentioned here before, I had a discussion with a clean-cut representative of Why Islam? at a subway station in San Francisco about a year ago.

I knew I couldn't take on all possible topics, so I just broached the Muslim view of Jesus (Isa), and women in Islam. First there was a lot of general Taqqiya and obfuscation. He only dropped the whitewash after he realized that I knew more about Islam than the average Western commuter. I deliberately kept my tone rather neutral to see what he would say.

He claimed that, yes, Islam "respected" women, but acknowledged that that meant something rather different than in the West. He owned that Aisha was just nine when Mohammed consummated his "marriage" to her, but that child marriage was "good for women".

As for Isa, he agreed that Isa would return in the last days to slay Christians. He said, "of course, because they have lied about him!"

I'm not sure that views like these will do a lot to dispel the West's "negative stereotype about Islam". Of course, the Why Islam? brochures paint a rather rosier picture of the "Religion of Peace".

"...the supposed oppression of Muslim women..."

A bit of "helpful" editorializing there by the reporter.

There is actual, documented oppression of Muslim women taking place in the world right now, sanctioned by Islamic texts and Shariah law. She didn't need the qualifier "supposed".

Also, isn't ICNA associated with the Muslim Brotherhood?

Osgo, that billboard would never go up in Saudi Arabia. No freedom of speech. Even the few anti-Jihad signs and billboards that have gone up in the West are often subject to lawsuits against "hate". They are also likely to be vandalized.

I would gladly contribute to an add campaign that tells the truth about Islam. I suggest posters on buses, subways, and other public transportation, titled "Why I could never be a Muslim." All that would be needed is a list of quotes from the Koran and adieth like "Jews and Christians are descendant from apes and pigs". and some other choice quotes from the Islamic holy books.

Let Muslims explain away these quotes, and let the public see the truth. Why let Muslims have a free hand in "educating" the unsuspecting public?

I don't suppose it would be possible for someone clever to set up a system as follows:

the 'why Islam' number is rung.

the Muslim taqiyya artist at the other end picks up the phone.

to be treated to one-to-two-minute sound-bites from, inter alia, Fr Zakaria Botros' 'Truth Talks', Mr Spencer's video or radio presentations, the soundtrack of 'Islam: What the West Needs to Know', and interviews with Wafa Sultan, Ali Sina, Ibn Warraq, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

This would be set up to keep on happening at hourly intervals.

Here's all one needs to know about lovely Islam:

"If a Muslim changes his religion from Islam, then kill them."

"We don't want everyone to just have this negative stereotype about Islam," he said. "We're just trying to do our part to get people to see that there is another side to the story."

If you want to dispel the negative stereotypes about Islam and show another side of the story, concentrate on stamping out the extremists who have "hijacked" your religion. That'll go a lot farther than pushing billboard propaganda.

And yes, Josephine, ICNA is a Muslim Brotherhood front group.

Alternatively, where is BUGA-UP when you need them?

Imagine a SWAT team of graffitists modifying these signs.

I think there's enough space at the bottom of the sign to add remarks such as 'The Cult of Slavery Wants YOU!' or 'The Religion of War Wants YOU', or 'Join the Arab Supremacists NOW!'

It's nauseating how these people presume to lecture us about how we don't understand Islam when so many of their tribe who are violent jihadists don't understand Islam either... or so we are informed.

In Christianity, we're told to take the beam out of our own eye before we worry about the speck in that of another.

In Islam, they don't care what we see with our own eyes about their religion and their god.

It's that old Richard Pryor punch-line: Who you gonna beleive; me or your lying eyes?

I don't understand why he felt the need to respond to Obsession. The movie starts with words on the screen that say, "This film is about radical Islamic terror. A dangerous ideology fuelled by religious hatred. It’s important to remember, most Muslims are peaceful and do not support terror. This film in not about them." The movie then shows radical Islamists in their own words. It's almost as if the ISNA wants us to stay in a state of ignorance. I went to www.whyislam.org and started to have some hope. But then I used my brain, remembered that war is deception and did some research and learned of the ISNA's past support of the jihad in Chechnya, along with their support of Hamas and Hezbollah.

Great ideas, Dumbles and jdamn, on calling the 877 number and getting brochures.

Count me in.

Spotted one of these in Minneapolis, corner of Franklin and Hennepin avenues just south of downtown. Same outfit.

Why Islam?

Because Islam is here to take over this country and to kill you if you don't convert, that's why.

Here in Britain, under the Trade Descriptions Act, an ad could be brought down and the sponsors fined if the ad is deemed to be misleading. I'm sure you in the US would have something similar.

Surely, after ringing the number and given false information about islam, one could make a complain to the courts that they have been misled and have this circus closed down.

We need to counter this with our own ad campaign.

“We need to counter this with our own ad campaign.”

Yes we do. I would suggest something like:

“EQUAL RIGHTS?”
“Virtuous women are obedient…” “But chide those for whose refractoriness ye have cause
to fear; remove them into beds apart, and scourge (beat) them…” Qur’an 4:38
The truth will set you free.

I got $100 bucks (at least) toward putting it on a bus or billboard in the S.F. Bay Area.

How about billboards proclaiming "Islam - the Truth" and then a free phone number (paid for by our donations). Many people thinking that the ad is pro islam, will ring the number only to be confronted with a pre-recorded voice message of one Mr Robert Spencer taking them through the truth about islam as we know it, verse by verse, chapter by chapter.

It could even have "hot keys" where the listener could jump from one section to another, it could be linked to this site and ask for donations and volunteers.

It could even have Robert's take on any current jihadi atrocity and the real reasoning behind the killings, not the one given by the twin wicked witches: al-bbc and al-cnn.

The possibilities are endless!

Who knows, the march against islam could be a humble pre-recorded answering message.

Go for it Robert.

"Why Islam"? Indeed !!

Have to wonder just how effective these ads here in America for Islam really are. Don't quite know but it wouldn't surprise me if they turn off a lot more people than they attract. Of course, there would always be that portion of the population who would be indifferent to them, as they would be indifferent to most anything other than what would bring direct comfort to their lives. As for those who would respond positively to these ads, seems they would be the losers in our society for the most part. Islam, as more are finding out with each passing year, attracts a lot of losers.

Call early, call often. Have long lists of questions at the ready. Have long lists of responses at the ready. Talk slowly and enunciate clearly. Ask them if they have anything to mail to you. Get it all mailed to you. Bleed their resources.

Gravenimage, pointing out how islam condones and encourages pedophilia, as the representative from WhyIslam didn't even try hard to deny to you when you chatted with him, should be more than enough to help alert the American public to the threat posed by that cult.

If more people learned about mohammed sexually violating Aisha when he was 52 and she was 6; and that his actions can't be condemned, but are considered worthy of great praise in islam due to how muslims view that louse-ridden scumbag as a perfect man and an example to be emulated, it could make it a lot more difficult for CAIR and such jihadist outfits to keep fooling too many people with their taqqiya BS.

Messages like "Sexually attracted to children? Then you and prophet Mohammed (God's creation masterpiece) have something in common." could easily drive home that point. As sick as it might sound to one who is ignorant about islam, it would show them a lot about one of the many dark sides of that sick cult.

I wonder how many of those who post here are women? I say that because when I talk about the Islamist stealth agenda to men, they don't seem so worried, as they imagine that the threat to them is not so bad, and actually sometimes anger me with jokes about taking extra wives, etc.

The message must be got through to men that Islam is just as bad for them as it is for women.

Billboards, hotlines...we are getting somewhere. People have to start, well, panicking.

"Salaam to all:
As some of you might know, we are working on a Bus Ad Campaign (see attached Bus Ad example picture).

This campaign is in response to the hateful DVD 'Obsession' against Muslims that was distributed last week in the Miami Herald, Sun Sentinel and many other newspapers nationwide. The main purpose of this DVD's mass distribution is to plant hateful seeds among Americans toward all Muslims and specially American Muslims. There were about 27 million DVD copies initially distributed, and more to come.

As American Muslims, we must bring awareness about ISLAM and the peaceful message we call for. I am working with Masjids and organizations including CAIR and ICNA ...

((note the connection to the billbords, ed. buraq))

... to launch the campaign in South Florida (Dade and Broward Co) starting November 1st for two month. During the holiday season in November and December, we are able to target more people, as shoppers are out and more exposed to see the bus ads.

This campaign will have large colorful ads posted on the side of about 120 to 150 buses in both Dade and Broward Co. for a duration of two month. We will also have small ads inside 600 buses in Dade Co and inside Metro Rail. The cost for this bus campaign is about $60,000.00 dollars; plus the expense of hiring an employee for two month to answer calls that come in. We will also need one or two volunteers to assist in call taking.

((HERE IT COMES, remember the reason for the billboard given above: "We don't want everyone to just have this negative stereotype about Islam," he said. "We're just trying to do our part to get people to see that there is another side to the story." WELL, HE LIES!, ed. buraq))

Now it is time to invest in our future and our kids future in this country. Our enemy had spent so far on this hateful DVD $80,000,000.00 dollars (this is a true figure, 80 million dollars). We need to raise only $60,000.00 dollars. This is 'Fi Sabeel Allah', it could be from your Zakat or Sadakh. Please be generous in this month of Ramadan. Sponsor a bus for $500.00 or two buses for $1000.00 Fi Sabeel Allah, or ask you Masjid or organization to sponsor a bus or two. This campaign will bring Daawah to Islam insha Allah, therefore, the rewards are big for those who help.

((Right - it has only do do with truth and nothing with da'wa /sarc. Here you have the real reason. Right from a Mohammedans mouth in accord with islamic teaching - rewards = brownie points for Allah, ed. Buraq))

I need to execute the contract with the bus transit system advertising company soon. Please email me your pledge. Make your check payable to CAIR Florida. Before you mail your check, please contact me, so we could apply it toward this campaign.

Note: CAIR has also launched a website to counter attack this DVD. The website is www.ObsessionWithHate.com If any one ask you about the DVD, give them this website.

We need your help and support for the bus ad campaign.

Let me know if you have any questions."

Of course some men will make stupid jokes about multiple wives. Only men benefit from islam. Men who joke about it, or think it's not so bad, should be forced to watch, day after day, graphic videos of beheadings, amputations, stonings, FGM, and all the other assorted barbaric aspects of islam a la Alex in a Clockwork Orange, with their eyes forcibly held open. And the first to be forced to watch in this way, should be our dhimmi "leaders".

"We don't want everyone to just have this negative stereotype about Islam," he said.

What 'sterotype'? We are perfectly well aware of the TRUTH about this charming religion of violence, hatred, backwardness, and segregation.

"24 billboards went up in 18 cities, including Orlando, Portland, Ore., and San Antonio, Texas"

Has somebody who frequents this blog, living in one of those cities, actually seen any of these 'Why Pisslam' posters? Is it possible for you to do something about them?

- Proud EX-Muslim

Proud_Kafir, make that: "Lust after babies? Islam's for you!"

PG, men will care about Islam when they know it robs their daughters of their rights and that they stand to be abducted, forcibly converted, genitally mutilated (as happened to non-Muslim women in Indonesia and East Timor), and raped by terrorists for the rest of their lives. They'll also care when it takes away their beer, their free speech, and their porn.

Thanks, Bigshaker, I thought so.

Ralph, correction. It is tenets of Islam, not tenants (tenants are those who live in a building). :)

While that's indeed possible, don't overlook the fact that such billboards end up conveying a perception that an area is more Islamic than it actually is. A damaging perception to convey.

I came across a suggestion by Lawrence Auster to have a public information campaign based on this slogan:

If there were no Muslims in America, there would be no risk of Muslim terrorism in America
No prizes for guessing that such billboards would be instantly pulled.

I am educated! ISLAM IS SHIT!!!

I will die first! At least I will be in Heaven!

They all can have their raggady ass 72 hags in HELL!

If the message “gets through” to women, the men will follow. Women are sometimes the better, easier target for the truth about Islam, particularly when the brutalization of women and girls is portrayed.

Case in point, I have two very good friends (husband and wife) that I have known for 30 years+ who are also very, very liberal. All of my efforts to convince Jim of the truth about Islam completely and utterly failed. However, I noticed that Nancy seemed to pay a little more attention when the subjects of “honor killing” and women’s rights were discussed. Soon I pretty much ignored Jim as a waste of time, as far as Islam was concerned, and focused on Nancy. We managed short conversations and comments until "the looks" temporarily stopped us - still the message was getting through to Nancy.

Now after a year or so, Nancy “gets it” and we have been sharing books back and forth (she just loaned me “They Must Be Stopped”). For quite some time I have been telling Nancy of occasional instances of “honor killings” as they have been reported here and she recently visited jihadwatch for the first time - mission accomplished.

Now Jim is no longer so dismissive and seems to be ready to listen a bit – this I can work with, proceeding slowly and gently of course.

The point is that it was the WOMAN who was the first to awaken due to her empathy for all the poor little girls, murdered by their fathers and brothers.

Educate the women and the men will surely follow.

Dave - well done! And by describing how you went about your campaign you are providing a model for other jihadwatchers who may have similar people to enlighten.

If the message “gets through” to women, the men will follow.

That's why I use the t-shirt strategy. Men pay attention to a message when it's draped over boobs. Plus it pisses off the libtards, which is always fun. I like short quotes. Thomas Mann, Winston Churchill, Tabari or Ghazali with a powerful picture underneath, cartoons of the pedophile prophet, etc.

What's the penalty for defacing billboards in Florida? In Oregon and Texas? In the dead of night, no-one would see you.

Let's see....we could change a few words. Under "Purpose of life? To make islam supreme....to kill non-believers....to stone you .....to behead you....to take your wives as war booty.....to mutilate your daughters....to brainwash your sons...
Call us to discuss."

Davegreybeard, You made a good point and thankyou. I think what worries me more is that there are many Western men who are rather bitter about women. The propaganda about Muslim women (always portrayed as sweet, polite, innocent, chaste and good-wife material) is seductive to many, and indeed when I was in Sudan it was impossible to ignore the grace and manners of the girls.

Feminism's downside has meant that many of our girls do not understand men and their psychological needs. I try and teach my daughter to be thoughtful of men; if she does not want to respond to their overtures to do it in such a way that they are not embarrassed or humiliated - to make them, hopefully, feel glad that they at least met her. So many Western men are turning to Asian women as they are frightened of our girls with their demands, their swearing and bad behaviour. Western men and women need to be proud of each other and realize our hope lies with each other, not in some Oriental fantasy.

Jdamn, you are right about the risks men face, but they are risks to do with individual non-compliance with Islam, whereas for women the result of conversion is a dead cert. Of course, for men, polygamy means some will not get a wife at all, let alone two or more, but their ego and imagination will not let them go there.

PG, those men don't stay with Eastern women. It's a fantasy they all have. Twice I've broken up with guys who went out with Asian chicks right after me, both for a relatively long time. They both came crawling back. They went with the Asian chicks because it was a fantasy, but also because they just thought it would be easier because they're such blank slates. Granted, it may be easier to get along with nothing, but after 6 months of no conversation over dinner it drives them crazy. Plus, the fake little-girl voice gets really tiresome. It's cute at first, then it's intolerable.

Real women (many of us Asian) hail exclusively from the West or are, like Bat Ye'or, raised with Western values. Smart men - real men - ultimately choose us. It's tactless to not be with independent women because the children of parasitic women end up being career parasites. On some level smart men realize this. Insecure losers gravitate toward women who would be nothing without them. Smart men pick a winning horse. Men, like women, want to meet their match - intellectually, physically, in terms of strengths and weaknesses, sense of humor, temperament, etc. Western men think that Asian women are a better match but they rarely are in the end. Think of all the white men you know who are married to Asian women and have been for a long time. Those women don't have accents, do they?

Men need to feel needed. Western women may screw that up, it's true. Some men are mechanically inclined, some are good navigators, some just want you to laugh at their jokes. It's about meeting one's match, and that usually means someone from one's own culture. Insecure losers gravitate toward women who would be nothing without them. Smart men pick a great women in order to form a great team. Then again, most men aren't worth it. All the ones who are are Western, with the exception of some African Christian men, and only a few of them.

jdamn
"Real women (many of us Asian) hail exclusively from the West "

Wow, I can't ignore the superiority dripping from those words. I'm an East Asian female living in Asia and I can tell you that statement couldn't be further from the truth. Like you said, the Western conception of Asian women is just a fantasy. A relationship built on fantasy can't last. Once these Western men find out their Asian girlfriends actually have a personality and an opinion of their own, the relationship is doomed.

I feel sorry for guys who go for mail order brides thinking they'll get a more docile woman. Many end up with gold diggers who give them the runaround and they don't even have the wit to know they're being conned. Their idea of Asian women is so set it doesn't enter their minds that these women may be running a scam.

I have to concede though, that a minority of Asian girls do fit this stereotype. Taiwan especially like their women to be silly little girls.

Shouldn't ads for terrorism be illegal in Christland?
