Nigeria: 2,000 "angry youths" storm mosque

More from the ever-ambiguous yet perpetually angry "youth" who go on apparently "random" rampages every once in a while. And what triggered this latest outburst, which left hundreds dead? Rumors that Muslims had lost a local democratic election to a Christian party. Nothing new: four years earlier in this same district, the Muslims -- youths and otherwise -- went on a rampage killing 1500 Christians and destroying 173 churches.

"2,000 youths storm mosque in riot-torn Nigerian city," by Amini Abubakar for the Star Phoenix, December 1:

JOS, Nigeria - Two thousand angry youths stormed a mosque in the riot-torn city of Jos on Monday as a top parliament official appealed for an end to religious troubles that have left hundreds dead, witnesses said.

Thousands of troops and police patrolled the streets of the central city after the clashes between rival Christians and Muslims however and a relative calm led to an easing of a curfew.

Youths entered the main mosque as the speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, made an appeal to Muslim leaders for calm.

The youths shouted for the removal of Plateau state governor Jonah Jang and his government before they left after an intervention by Muslim leaders and the mosque was cordoned off.

"You must put your anger in your pockets," Bankole told them.[...]

The state government has said about 200 people died in the clashes, though other sources have given a toll twice the official figure.

A Red Cross official spoke of "well over 300 people killed" and Khaled Abubakar, an imam at the central mosque, and another Muslim official spoke of about 400 bodies taken to the mosque. A Christian clergyman spoke of "several hundred" killed.

Corpses that were still visible in large numbers on Sunday had all been removed from the streets of the town and buried by Monday.[...]

"It is important that this thing doesn't go beyond Jos and we need you to tell the youth this," Bankole told Muslim leaders at the mosque meeting.

Thousands of people sought refuge in churches, mosques and army and police barracks after the Jos troubles, according to the Red Cross.

The clashes were triggered by a rumour Friday that the majority-Muslim All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) had lost a local election to the mainly Christian Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to a police spokesman.

Muslims and Christians for the most part cohabit peacefully in Nigeria.

Except when Muslims have to deal with them as democratic equals, in which case they -- that is, the "youth" -- go on rampages, killing hundreds.

Truly a foul religion fit for demons and the devil.

And its followers need to be ejected from the west before the same happens here.

For there can be no peaceful co-existence with Muslims once they achieve near parity in terms of demographics.

Is this the "peaceful cohabitation" we will experience as greater numbers of "youths" migrate to the West?

And Muslims think they're ready for democracy. Not by a longshot, obviously.

When Muslims feel strong enough..it's either
"my way or no way". yep.

"Muslims and Christians for the most part cohabit peacefully in Nigeria."

Ahhh yes, the standard media disclaimer. Just like consistent AP disclaimer that "Sunni and Shia for the most part cohabit peacefully in Pakistan"...every time there is confessional violence there.

One wonders, was there ever a similar disclaimer touting Catholic/Protestant amity during the troubles in Northern Ireland? I think not.

Makes one nauseas.

You mean Islam is a political entity.....................

So it would not be Islamaphobic or racist to attack Islam in that it would be like denouncing Nazism......................

I wonder if we would see a something like this if Ellison loses his Congressional seat in Minnesota.......................

Ah, Nigeria - What a paradise.

"Muslims and Christians for the most part cohabit peacefully in Nigeria."

Nice to see the [insert pre-rerquisite misleading yet PC statement here] comment.

Sorry, I can't help myself ...

WHAT'S A YOOT? lol

Actually, I believe SOME of the dead are Muslims killed by Christians who ACTUALLY FIGHT BACK!!! But then this is savage uncivilized Black Africa...

A dispatch from Nigeria:

"President of the Senate, Chief David Mark; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Dimeji Bankole, yesterday jointly condemned the riots in Jos, in which over 200 people have been confirmed killed.

Senator Mark and Bankole who both spoke at the adult harvest thanksgiving service of St Mulumba Catholic Chaplaincy, Apo, Abuja described the Jos riots as the handiwork of fanatics who themselves do not belong to any religious faith.

Mark specifically called for the prosecution of the people that are behind the riot.

He said: 'People just go under cover of religion to commit crime. Truly, what is going on in Jos has nothing to do with religion.

'I totally condemn religious fanatics. I am not aware of any faith that advocates violence. Every faith that I know of condemns killing. So, when you go out of our way and kill in the name of religion, you should be punished,' he said."
Nota bene: "Every faith that I know of condemns killing."

But this is false. Read the Qur'an, and the gloss on the Quran, the Hadith and the Sira, and one finds quite quickly that Allah commands violence against Infidels, that Muslims have a duty to engage in Jihad against non-Muslims (and in seventh-century Arabia, and for more than a millennium following, the weapon of Jihad was qitaal or combat), in order to push back the boundaries of Dar al-Islam, and the Model of Conduct, the Perfect Man, Muhammad, was a warrior who approvingly witnessed the decapitation of 600 to 900 bound prisoners of the Banu Qurayza, who received with pleasure the notice that those who mocked him --- Asma bint Marwan, Abu Afak -- were killed, who attacked the inoffensive Jewish farmers of the Khaybar Oasis, for the sole purpose not of spreading Islam but of seizing their property and their women.

In 1967, having endured massacres by Muslims in north and central Nigeria. the Christians --- chiefly but not only the Ibo, rebelled and attempted to break off from control by the Muslims of the North. They declared the state of Biafra. That state received recognition only from a handful of African states, and aid only from Ghana and Israel. All the Western countries decided that it was "important" not to "interfere" -- which meant not to recognize Biafra, not to aid in the “break-up of Black Africa’s most populous nation” (as if this were itself a self-evident good, overriding the desire of the Christians to be free of the Muslim yoke). The Arabs, however, intervened, with money, with arms, and with Egyptian pilots and MIGS who cheerfully strafed Ibo villages, killing tens of thousands. About a million Christian civilians were killed in the Biafra War, a war that the leader of Biafra, Colonel Ojuku, in his celebrated Ahiara Declaration of 1969 had no trouble in describing what he called the “Jihad” being waged against the Christians).

If, whether in countries where the Muslims dominate, or in countries where there are a sufficient number of Muslims to feel they can act with impunity, non-Muslims find themselves either accepting the persecution and daily humiliations and even attacks and murders – the Copts in Egypt, the Assyrians in Iraq, the Christians in Pakistan, the Hindus in Pakistan and Bangladesh – or, in some cases, goaded beyond endurance, fighting back, as in Nigeria, or in India, then one is entitled to find fault not with Hindus or Christians or Jews or Buddhists or any other non-Muslim group, but with the common denominator of the trouble: those who carry within themselves the ideology of Islam.

It is understandable that Chief Mark, President of the Senate of Nigeria, should utter the same pious platitudes that Bush and Blair and Rice and so many others, in the much more powerful and less threatened West, have done. But does it make sense, in the end, for him to do so? Should non-Muslims be misled by their own leaders, so that they, who depend on those leaders to instruct and and protect them, will never quite come to grips with the meaning, and menace, of Islam? Where has this worked? Where?

......................

Oh, c'mon--it's the same all over the world. Why, just look at the United States--thousands of young Republicans have stormed GOP party headquarters in the wake of the last presidential election losses--oh, wait--no, they haven't.

more:

And what triggered this latest outburst, which left hundreds dead? Rumors that Muslims had lost a local democratic election to a Christian party.
......................

Well, you can't have Dhimmis winning elections--it goes against the natural order. No wonder these youths were so angry!

President of the Senate, Chief David Mark, said:
"I totally condemn religious fanatics. I am not aware of any faith that advocates violence. Every faith that I know of condemns killing."

What an ignorant fellow to be president of the Nigerian Senate! He's never heard of Islam, which positively wallows in killing! And yet there are so many Islamics in Nigeria.

It's just "youthful" hijinks!
Let's all give an indulgent chuckle, and say "boys will be boys."

From the Barnabas Fund website, an account much closer to the truth:~

The Archbishop of Jos, Rt Rev. Ben Kwashi, issued an urgent plea for prayer on the first day of violence. “Please pray for us in Jos, we are being attacked by Muslims.” Mentioning the link with the local elections, he added, “Why Christians must pay for this I do not know.” On Saturday, he reported, “The Muslims are attacking and burning this morning. It looks well coordinated. They are well armed with AK47 and pump machine guns. This morning they have been at Dogonduste. Quite a number of Christian homes have been burnt. We do not know how many have been killed.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has denied allegations that its group started the attack, and appealed to all the people of the state to be calm. Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, the chairman of CAN in Plateau State, commented, “We were taken aback by the turn of events in Jos. We thought it was political, but from all indications it is not so. We were surprised at the way some of our churches and property were attacked and some of our faithful and clergy killed. The attacks were carefully planned and executed. The questions that bog our minds are why were churches and clergy attacked and killed? Why were politicians and political party offices not attacked if it were a political conflict? Why were the business premises and property of innocent civilians destroyed? We strongly feel that it was not political but pre-meditated act under the guise of elections.”

It is difficult to figure out what happened from the wording of the story quoted above.

But then, that is probably the intent.

Isn't it neat: Hundreds are murdered by Muslim rioters, but the headline and lead story is that some of the Muslim's marched on their own mosque, and the story ignores the non-muslim murder victims.

I saw a similar article from AP (the quoted one is AFP). Where are the reports about the hundreds of victims? Perhaps the AP/AFP stringer is muslim.

Here's the AFP story as it appeared in Australia:

Nigerian army takes over riot city

Posted 16 minutes ago

'The Nigerian army has taken over the stricken city of Jos to enforce calm after two days of Muslim-Christian clashes {yeah? Probably Muslim attacks on Christians followed by Christian self-defence - dda} that left hundreds dead.

"The situation this morning is gradually returning to normal. There has not been any cases this morning of any destruction or violence," Brigadier Emeka Onwamaegbu said.

'Residents reported troops patrolling the streets and calm returning to the city.

'Offering the first official toll, Plateau State's Information Minister Nuhu Gagara said about 200 people died during fighting on Friday and Saturday (local time) between the rival communities over the results of a local election in the Plateau State capital.

'Other sources have given a toll twice the official figure.

"This figure is just preliminary, as a search and rescue committee has been inaugurated by the Government to go around the city and recover dead bodies," Mr Gagara told reporters. He did not give a figure for the injured.

'Police arrested 500 people on Saturday alone, carrying "all sorts of lethal weapons," Mr Gargara said.

'A Plateau State Government spokesman was quoted in newspapers as saying that 1,500 youths had been arrested over the two days in connection with the violence.

'Jos was under tight police and army surveillance Sunday, military spokesman Mr Onwamaegbu said, while declining to say how many troops had been deployed in the city.

"There's been no reports of violence this morning, the army has taken over the capital but the only fear is what might happen at the outskirts of the town," Muslim cleric Adamu Tsoho said.

'Relief workers and observers offered markedly higher death tolls than the Government's preliminary estimates.
"Well over 300 people have been killed in the last two days of violence," one Nigerian Red Cross official said, asking to remain anonymous.

'Khaled Abubakar, an imam from the central mosque in Jos said Saturday that "close on 400 bodies" had been laid out in the mosque.

"Muslim prayers were observed on 351 dead bodies at the central mosque and then taken to the cemetery where they are being buried," Mr Tsoho, the other cleric, said.

'Another 30 bodies had been removed from the mosque Saturday night by relatives and had been buried.

'Earlier that day a local journalist said he counted 381 bodies in the mosque.

'The Nigerian Red Cross reported as early as Friday night that 300 people had been injured and that more than 10,000 people forced to flee their homes, had sought refuge in churches, mosques and army and police barracks.

'The clashes were triggered by a rumour Friday that the majority-Muslim All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) had lost in a local election to the mainly Christian Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), according to a police spokesman.'
AFP - END STORY

Note that this story, relayed to Australia via AFP, tells us NOTHING about the Christians; and yet the Barnabas Fund newsflash quoted by Liam above, mentions burning of Christians' houses and attacks on churches and clergy - and all of it organised and coordinated, not spontaneous at all, which suggests the 'rumour' about the election result was merely a pretext (rather like the claim that the Intifada was triggered by Sharon's visit to the temple mount: when the whole thing had in fact been planned by the jihadis for ages).

In connection with Christian response to continual Muslim aggression, it may be worthwhile remembering something from six centuries ago that may have helped contribute to the legend of Prester John.

From James Parkes, 'Whose Land? A History of the Peoples of Palestine' (1970 ed.), p. 106, discussing the Mamluk period and what happened therein, to Jews and Christians in eretz Israel:

"Whenever a Mamluk ruler had reason to be displeased by the conduct of the Christian West, he vented his indignation on his own Christian subjects...

"In 1422 the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was again shut, and many Christians imprisoned and tortured, because some Catalonian ships had attacked the Egyptians.

'And when in 1444 Pope Eugene IV preached a new crusade, primarily against the Turks, Christian shrines were desecrated, the Holy Sepulchre was with difficulty saved from destruction, and the Christians, especially the Latins, suffered violent persecution.

'From this situation they were rescued, and the buildings were saved, by the King of Abyssinia

'*who threatened to pull down all mosques and kill all Muslims within his dominions* {my emphasis added - dda}

if the Christians were not left in peace." END QUOTE

Parkes does not give source, chapter and verse for this remarkable episode, but his bibliography includes Sir William Muir's 'The Mamelukes, or Slave Dynasty of Egypt, 1260-1517' (1896) which seems to me to be the most likely source.

I have not yet been able to find out who exactly was King of Abyssinia in 1444.

But he had guts and deserves to be remembered as a hero.

Dec 2 , 2008

Just found out yesterday that the UN is ready to approve an agreement to put into effect punishable by death to anyone whom claims that the muslim/islam sharia laws crimes of murder and terriorism are bad.

what great orator or president or author once said---Tolerance becomes wrong and EVIL only when given and applied to criminals.

Also, whom was it that said-all that's needed for tyranny to reign is that good men do nothing.

Go see for yoursleves at the site called--The Amerian Center for Law and Peace and how they are bravely working to protect our freedoms but they need backing (not talking money here people, ie means signatures) see for yourselves because there is a time window on this so get to it right away.

Correction on the web site above is--The American Center for Law and Justice to see about how we as americans can protect ourselves.

The UN said they are ready to approve that agreement that says punishable by death to anyone whom says that the islam/muslim/sharia law crimes of murder and crimes are bad.
