Pakistani security forces raid jihadist compound, arrest "Mumbai mastermind"

The first attempt to respond to mounting pressure from India and the U.S. "'Mumbai mastermind' arrested in Pakistan," by Zahid Hussain in the Times Online, December 8 (thanks to Alexandre):

Pakistani security forces have raided a suspected training camp used by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the militant group blamed for last month's attack on Mumbai, and arrested several of the group's activists, government officials said today.

One official told The Times that among those arrested was Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, an LeT activist whom Indian officials have accused of masterminding the Mumbai attack.

The raid last night near Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, was Pakistan's first attempt to respond to mounting pressure from India and the United States to take quick and decisive action against LeT and its affiliates.

Security officials refused to publicly confirm or deny the raid or the arrests. But government officials, speaking off the record, said that Pakistani troops raided a large compound belonging to Jamaat-ud-Dawa, the parent organization of LeT, about three miles outside Muzaffarabad. Local residents said army helicopters were also involved in the raid....

If he's extradited to India, it's not a farce. Don't hold your breath.

Reminds me of how the Pakistanis used to pull a bunny out of a hat every time there was a talk in the US media of Pakistan not pulling its weight or whenever Bush needed a boost in the polls.

Right, Cornelius. Also, is he only going to be the fall guy, or will there be more arrests? Again, no breath holding required.

About time, too...

Actually it's too late, in a very real sense.

The Pak gov't know where all the camps are located and if they really wanted to close them down, they could, but it seems their military would be closed down as well.

activists? the Times UK is calling them "activists"?

Well, the NYT is calling them "militants."

ANYTHING but what they are: Islamic Terrorists, Mass-Murdering Mohammedans, and most importantly, Islamic Jihadists.

Give me a break. There are probably hunderds of those terror trainings camps in pakistan and the Pakistanis only raid 1 of those camps. This thing looks like a Al-Taqiyya campaign. it would not surprise me if those who are arrested turn out to be low level figures that the paki government has bombarded to being the top leadership.

The real leaders of that islamic terror outfit still walk freely around in pakistan and nothing is being done to arrest them.

India has given the paki's a list of 20 names. Let's see if the pakis arrest those men and extradite them to india. Personaaly i don't think so. this raid was nothing more than symbol politics by the pakistanis

but.......but ......Pakistan SAID they had nothing to do with the Mumbai massacre. Didn't you BELIEVE them.......?

I can't wait for these guys to get extradited to India so they can receive JUSTICE..........

ZenaWarriorPricess.

These camps are the recruitment nurseries of Pakistan Military. The human hardware. What about the "Think Tanks" of these nurseries. Some of them like 'Deoband' are in India too.

Another wonder is that it took so many years to West and USA to comprehend even after NYC 9/11,2001

"but.......but ......Pakistan SAID they had nothing to do with the Mumbai massacre. Didn't you BELIEVE them.......?"

Good one, n.a. palm.

Answer: No.

India has given the paki's a list of 20 names...I mean, 20 million names.

“Indian Muslims have often suffered twice: first from the terror, and then from the accusations afterward,” said Javed Akhtar, a Muslim poet and lyricist. “Perhaps because of that, they have been much more articulate and more unconditionally clear about condemning this attack.”

“After this attack, everything has changed; people now see the realities,” said Saeed Ahmed, 45, as he stood outside his stationery shop on Muhammad Ali Road, a working-class Muslim area. “This is something different from what we had before, it’s like your American 9/11. It is not about Hindus and Muslims; it is about the nation being attacked.”
--NY Times, "Muslims in India Put Aside Grievances to Repudiate Terrorism"

Where have we read this crap before?

But will he be turned over alive, turned over 'at all', or will he have an accident while in Pakistan custady?

Pakistan and the ISI can't let these guys talk.

You think calling them "activists" is bad? Last week MSNBC's Keith Olberman referred to Iraqi suicide bombers as--I am not kidding--"freedom fighters". I was so stunned I asked my husband if I had heard correctly.

I suppose this was too egregious even for MSNBC, because Olberman came on after the break and said some people had pointed out his terminology, and he apologized for "misspeaking".

Remember when most of us felt that just referring to them as "terrorists" was too weak, because it did not name the vicious ideology behind the violence? Now, much of the time, calling them "terrorists" at least seems like a condemnation to me, and bold as a result.

Not only have I pretty much despaired of their ever properly being called "Jihad terrorists", I worry that one day Mr. Olberman and those like him will feel no need to backpedal the next time they call these savage killers "freedom fighters".

'mastermind'?? The term does not apply, here. It takes no great intellect to send a few armed miscreants on a murder mission among an unarmed populace.

ewwwwww, Freedom fighters!??!!!

Olberman is wacked but I didnt think he was that wacked. Let's give him a TV show!

No, Olberman needs to be done away with. He defended Rachel Ray's keffiyeh and then he got all irate when the RNC showed footage from 9/11, which was actually very moving and beautiful and what outraged him was the fact that the film they showed made a great case for why Republicans are real Americans, since we're the ones who actually defend our country, are proud of it, and are openly patriotic and not just when it's convenient. How dare we de facto call the Left on their hypocrisy and make a case for why we should run the government. I hate Olberman.

The true Mumbai mastermind is in the Koran.

And the Hadiths.

Mohammad, the pedophile terrorist warlord.

The perfect model for maniacs.

What are the Pakis going to do those terrible LeT'ers, send them to bed without their rice pudding?

Is that a 'house arrest' where he is free to travel with security? And cover for not letting foreign agencies interrogate him?
