Israel also appeared to be sounding out a possible diplomatic exit from the 6-day-old military offensive against Hamas by demanding international monitors as a key term of any future truce.The bombing targeted 49-year-old Nizar Rayan, ranked among Hamas' top five decision-makers in Gaza. His four-story apartment building crashed to the ground, sending a thick plume of smoke into the air and heavily damaging neighboring buildings. It killed Rayan and 11 others, including two of his four wives and four of his 12 children, Palestinian health officials said. The Muslim faith allows men to have up to four wives.
Israel has made clear that no one in Hamas is immune in this offensive, and the strike that flattened Rayan's apartment building in the northern town of Jebaliya drove that message home.
"We are trying to hit everybody who is a leader of the organization, and today we hit one of their leaders," Israeli Vice Premier Haim Ramon said in a television interview.
Hamas leaders went into hiding before Israel launched the offensive on Saturday, but Rayan was known for openly defying Israel, and the military said he had a tunnel under his house that could serve as an escape route.

There's something I don't quite understand here. If I was new to the subject, I'd feel myself excused, but I'm not, and still don't get it:
Hamas is a listed terrorist group.
We are engaged in a "War on Terror", and have a lot of good people out there in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places. Difficult places, large and logistically very challeging.
Now, Hamas is largely confined to the Gaza strip, easy to reach from the sea, or from the British bases in Cyprus (for which the misers don't pay rent - but that's another matter).
It would be dead easy to direct a carrier group to the place and help the Israelis beat the crap out of the terrorists.
Why don't we do this?

Incidentally it mentions that it was a four-story house, so was that one floor for each wife? How did he allot the floors? Did the senior wife get the top floor with its symbolism that she was top-wife, as well as its having the best view and being the furthest from stree noise? Or did she get the bottom floor, so that she had the fewest stairs to climb? Or did she just get her choice? Or maybe the youngest -- and presumably prettiest -- get her choice? Maybe that's the reason he was at home: to rule on some domestic matter.

While it has become increasingly obvious that the Palestinians in general and the Gazans in particular are hardly the smartest people in the world and need to be continuously and repeatedly reminded in the most forceful terms that the only alternative to peace, is a war they can not win, this does not mean that we should hate all Muslims.
Hamas and their followers are not real Muslims anymore than the Ku Klux Klan or the Identity churches are real Christians, or the Israeli settlers who attack Israeli soldiers and innocednt Arabs are real Jews. These are all criminal terrorists using religion as an excuse for their own perverted beliefs and acts.
On the other hand, we have to change our definition of "innocent civilians" to exclude those cowards who may not take active part in the terrorist acts, but nonetheless offer full support to the terrorists.
Until the terrorists' "civilian" supporters learn and understand that there is a terrible price to be paid for this support and that there will be no safe haven for them - and no moral pass - until they overthrow and condemn the terrorists, they should continue to suffer what they rightly deserve

Doesn't sound to me as though he was ignorant of the scripture, history and theology of Islam, Islam, Islam. He was not 'failed' from those institutions in Saudi Arabia (the heartland of Islam), in Jordan, or in the Sudan. His resume got him a teaching position in the Islamic University at Gaza.
