An ominous initiative that we have discussed many times here -- the UN's efforts to silence those who call attention to the ways in which Islamic jihadists use the texts and teachings of Islam to justify their actions and make recruits -- gets attention in, of all places, the New York Daily News.

Almost 500 years ago, on the wall of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses, characterizing as "madness" the notion that papal pardons could absolve individuals for their sins. As viewed from Rome, Luther had maligned, even defamed, the church. Luther was eventually excommunicated. His conduct ultimately led to the creation of a Protestant Church in Germany and a Reformation throughout Europe.It is difficult to believe that in the 21st century anyone would seriously propose that conduct such as Luther's should be deemed illegal. But a few weeks ago, the General Assembly of the United Nations took a giant step in that direction. It adopted - for the fourth straight year - a resolution prepared by the 57-nation Organization of the Islamic Conference calling upon all UN nations to adopt legislation banning the "defamation" of religion. Spurred by the Danish cartoons of 2005, some of which portrayed the Prophet Muhammed in a manner deemed offensive by the OIC, the resolution was opposed by the United States, most European nations, Japan, India and a number of other nations.

From the very first OIC resolution to the current one there has never been any ambiguity about its purpose: to intimidate those who might criticize Islam. As phrased in the original OIC resolution introduced by Pakistan in 1999, Islam was "frequently and wrongly associated with human rights violations and terrorism." But it is a fact that however one may debate about whether "Islam" bears any responsibility for acts of terrorism ranging from the murderous 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington to the more recent massacre in Mumbai, terrible acts of violence have been committed in the name of Islam. It is also the case that repeated human rights violations, including female genital mutilation, also have occurred in the name of Islam.
It is one thing to urge that all Muslims should not be criticized because of these acts. But the notion that it may or should be made a crime even to "associate" Islam with crimes too often committed in its name is inconsistent with any notion that both freedom of speech and religion should be protected. What cannot be even negotiable is the freedom, the unfettered freedom, to publish challenging books, movies and - yes - the Danish cartoons.

Wow--Floyd Abrams' article is clear, concise, and accurate. Who thought you would see such from the NY Daily News?
Even though this has been going on for *four years* at the UN, I doubt very much that it is widely known.
A few weeks ago a poster wondered who had voted for the resolution, and who had opposed it. I did some searching and found the list--it was not surprising, but very instructive.
The nations that supported it were the worst in the world--quite literally. Not only hard-core Islamic nations, but a roll call of communist countries and repressive dictatorships.
The countries that voted against it were the UN's finest democracies--the US, Canada, most of Europe (all of Western Europe), Australia, New Zealand, Japan and a few others. The abstainers were mostly "semi-free" countries, including Argentina and Mexico. Actually, I was rather saddened to see Mexico in this group.
Kudos to the Daily News for spreading the word--especially with the aggressive pro-Jihad riots we are seeing spreading around the world, it is imperative that we have the freedom to call Islam what it is, and expose its links to the global Jihad.
Could this be a sign that the leftist MSM is now realizing the vile scum that they chose to team up with, and that they must now step up to the plate, and promote values consistent with those of their countrymen, and fight, with every ounce of their being, the muslim hoards, and the destructive soviet styled policies of the UN (like the "Law of the Sea Treaty)? I'm not counting on it, but there is always "hope" that they will "change", isn't there?
Not that we needed any more proof, but surely this is the straw that broke the camels back and prooves beyond reasonable doubt that the UN is totally devoid of morals, authority, and intelligence and should be disbanded.
I thought they were established to prevent wars and to be a platform for dialogue? What they're now saying is that dialogue is OK as long as it's the pro-Islamic, anti-Western kind.
We need to discuss Islam more and give it both barrels. We need a modern incarnation of Monty Python to do to Islam what they did to Christianity! Imagine the riots, the condemnation, the women in headscarves on their knees on the streets uncontrollably wailing (although I suspect they do this regularly and especially when Jihad quarterly is out of stock).

Defamation of other religions is a part of every religion - which would ban the religion itself, and because banning a religion would constitute defamation of religion - the ban would ban itself. Confused yet?

Dan, I'm all for creating an organization of nations which are worthy of dealing with, but I hate the name 'Western Supremacy.' In fact, that's basically NATO. I want to team up with Eastern nations like India, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Israel, and anyone else who holds regular, free elections and upholds the UDHR to the letter. The U.N. is clearly dysfunctional.
It would be nice to see the UN require that all members either accept the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in full or be expelled. That would eliminate most, if not all, of the Islamic countries.
Either that, or as suggested above, form a new organization made up only of the truly free countries.
At the very least, get the UN headquarters out of NYC. It only causes enormous problems for NYC and allows the terrorists and jihadists and their supporters another entrance to the US. Put the headquarters on some island, like one of the smaller Antilles or one of the Azores, and make it its own state, like the Vatican.

For that woman to establish as "fact" that hamas has been repeatedly offering peace to Israel for 8 months during 2008 is obscene. I pointed out to her that "peacemakers" don't lob off rockets on a consistent basis. I also pointed out that our Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton has categorically denied any "talks" with hamas, since the bottom line is they refuse to recognize Israel is a sovereign state.

These votes are very instructive--with only a few caveats, all the most despotic and unfree countries--including most Islamic countries--voted for it. Incidently, these include a number of countries that allow no freedom of religion at all--that is, atheist states such as North Korea and China.
Those that voted against are just about entirely solid democracies, and those that abstained tend to be either semi-oppressive and unfree countries, or ones with a creeping Muslim population. The absent states seem pretty irrelevant--either states that are tiny, or ones that are so chaotic that they don't maintain a consistent presence at the UN.

Perhaps some of you can add more to it with your experiences. I, having lived in NYC pre/post 9/11 attacks, have seen the discrimination of non-muslims/women by muslims. I was one of those people, when I raised concern about it with my supervisor, it was hushed away and I was told not to be so sensitive. People complain about discrimination in this country all the time and this is just another form of it. And one we all need to take a look at. (IMHO)

Heidi-Thanks for the post. It was quite relevant. I sent my opinion in. It is obviously written by a biased author. For that woman to establish as "fact" that hamas has been repeatedly offering peace to Israel for 8 months during 2008 is obscene. I pointed out to her that "peacemakers" don't lob off rockets on a consistent basis. I also pointed out that our Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton has categorically denied any "talks" with hamas, since the bottom line is they refuse to recognize Israel is a sovereign state.

I think you hit the nail on the head. All it takes to override our constitution is a President, Congress and supreme court that are driven by the ideology that multiculturalism, diversity and inclusiveness, are the supreme laws and values of the land. In addition, you need a citizentry that is too ignorant to see the threat to themselves and the nation.

Western Supremacy is not a suitable name for any kind of group that wants to command respect and power in the world, mainly because power is now witnessing a redistribution and gradual shift, with reduction in North America and Western Europe and growth in Asia. This trend is going to continue. So instead of KKK type supremacy, we should be working together here to defeat the common enemy. I also say this because a few weeks earlier I saw a comment by USPatriot I believe, who said something like "let India and Pakistan destroy each other and nuke each other off the map," which needless to say, was naïve and ignorant.
India (and more recently Israel) has been dealing with Islamic genocides and crimes before the world even knew what Islam was. India is a Hindu nation, and Hindus have been the greatest victims of Islamic crimes. India finds itself placed right in the middle of terrorists, and continuously attacked by terrorists / Islamic militants, as it has been for thousands of years. Many aren't aware of this but the Islamic invasion of India is THE most bloodiest chapter of world history, even more so than the Nazi Holocaust. The sad part is that India's Muslim appeasing press is not allowed to report on Islam's crimes on humanity over the 1000 year "coexistence" of Islam on the Indian subcontinent. Today's Indian journalism is completely dhimmi-ed out. There are several people who blindly believe the white-washed textbooks that they use to teach Indian History to children when the 1000 year existence of islam in India is portrayed as an amicable period, and a period of growth of understanding between the two religions, and of art and culture. This was only true under one emperor, one that is considered by Muslims to be an apostate - Akbar.
Anyway, I am beginning to wonder whether democracy is an effective tool to defeat Islam. Democracy means majority wins, and the majority, minute by minute is playing into Islam's favour through the Bedroom Jihad.

1. Immediate disbandment of the UN as Dan says.
2. Immediate removal of all Muslims in the West.
3. Immediate alienation of Saudi Arabia

4. War against Saudi Arabia, distribute the Oil amongst the Western nations and use that wealth to advance Nuclear.
5. Immediate demolition of all Mosques in the Western World.
6. Immediate removal of all contact with the Islamic world, including tourism, travel, world events, business, aid and dialogue. Let's see how long Islam lasts when it's been cut off from the Western World.
In a nutshell get rid of Islam once and for all and once you've got rid of them, start outlawing Marxist socialist groups and Islamic sympathisers. Send them to Islamic countries. We have to look at history and see that Islam is what Islam is and will never change.
We have the problem solved in a nutshell. Sure there will be trouble. Sure there will be bloodshed but we are facing a threat of civilisation far worse than anything the World faced with Nazi Germany.
It's really all about what are we going to do about it in the West? This is reality guys. No one else is going to solve the problems for us. Our leaders ally themselves with the wealthy Saudi Arabians.
Our problem is not Iran or Palestine or any other Islamic nation in the middle East. The Hydra has many heads that's for sure but the main head is Saudi Arabia. It's pushing all the buttons and our leaders are merely puppets in Saudi Arabia's World controlling Punch & Judy show.
Sure the above measures are without a doubt draconian, but then the question I'm asking is how far is Western Civilisation prepared to go in order to protect itself from Total and utter oblivion and Islamic Control?
One day the World will explode. One day a meteor will hit the Earth. The point is, that only under a Western Judeo/Christian culture can mankind develop the necessary technology with which to stop the meteor and and build an Ark with which to evacuate our people, flora and fauna of this planet. Under Islam we'll be looking at the meteor far off, proclaiming it as an Act of God, while we sit in our mud huts, praying to Allah for forgiveness!

Jdamn, I don't think that India uphold the UDHR to the letter, especially when it comes to Hindu widows - the city of Vrindavan is a good example of this.
In my opinion, the UDHR has been partly responsible for the erosion of the police's ability to do their job and the justice system to deal with criminals in the UK. There are several institutions that ensure rights of criminals are upheld during the legal process and one for the victim. The Crown Prosecution Service have become overwhelmed so they only pursue cases that are rock solid thus leaving thousands of crimes unpunished/investigated if the police can't provide sufficient evidence. Inevitably it's the victim who suffers in the end and leaves the criminals emboldened.
This has been a major factor in the youth/gang culture explosion in Britain because the criminals exploit their human rights to commit offences they know will go uninvestigated and unpunished.
As I see it, this is what becomes of following the UDHR to the letter and I don't think that's a particularly good thing. Implementing it with some sensible guidlines would be more appropriate, regrettably common sense is in short supply in our current government.
