I turned on the BBC World Service to torture myself -- the newspaper was not enough -- and came in as a news-item, the firing of rockets from Lebanon into Israel, was already being discussed. Some Englishman in Beirut, whose name I did not catch, was solemnly answering the idiotic question "why was this done" (I think the answer was to "send a message" to the Israelis, instead of simply "to kill Israelis"), and then went on to discuss the equally unimportant question "who might have been behind this" by explaining, with continuing solemnity, that in his studied view, it was not Hezbolllah, not this group and not that group, but the PFLP of Ahmed Jibril, a "Marxist." So listeners were left with this idea: a group of "Palestinian" "Marxists" had sent a message to Israel, a message to be found in a bottle, if that bottle is a Molotov cocktail on stilts.

I thought to myself: what an unenlightening q-and-a, and how much the BBC is full of these moments when it might, in the right hands, with the right informed people, begin to help its listeners understand the nature of the war against Israel, and the nature of the war already beginning in Western Europe, not by "this" group or "that" group, but by Muslims, the importance of whose particular affiliation is given a distracting and exaggerated importance, when for the non-Muslim victims of these various groups, with their various internal differences, it matters far less than people think. And how silly to think that calling Ahmed Jibril a "Marxist" -- long ago the great student of modern Arabian history, J. B. Kelly, wrote scathingly about the "Marxism" that lay uneasily on top of what really counted, the basic, inner essential core, of Islam -- was in any way useful, or enlightening. It meant nothing. What that Beirut BBC man, or that man in Beirut being consulted by the BBC, should have said, had he wanted to inform rather than confuse or push a line, is this:

"You ask which group it is. It hardly matters. It could be this group of Muslims or that group. It could be members of Hezbollah, trying to underline that they are still here, and Nasrallah just has to give the word. It could be some boys in those UNRWA-fed camps, just wanting to have fun, seeing if they might manage to kill some Israelis for the hell of it. It could be another group, say that of Ahmed Jibril, whose group some like to describe, rather misleadingly and certainly in this case most irrelevantly, as "Marxist" -- for they were in no sense trying to uphold the labor theory of value, and certainly not to suggest that the workers of this world should unite. It was a Muslim group, trying to harm non-Muslim Israel. That is not a surprise. That's what the BBC's expert or correspondent or whatever he was in Beirut might have said. But he didn't, of course. He spoke of "Marxist" Ahmed Jibril. He spoke rot.

And why not? For at the very end, he was identified again, and this time I heard his name. He turned out to be, you see, Alistair Crooke.

Of course nothing further was explained. Listeners -- unless those listeners were you, and I, dear reader -- would not know who Alistair Crooke is, and why he was fired by the British government for coming far too close to Hamas, and how he has been a stout promoter of Hamas ever since, And and how he now makes his livelihood, or tries to.

Yes, I know. I should have known. I should know that the BBC World Service is capable of anything. I just keep not quite believing it. And once again, I see that I was wrong.

I have been deliberately NOT watching the TV news.

When I read the Australian ABC news site, or perhaps The Australian online, and even the Jerusalem Post reports, I mentally translate all instances of the word 'Palestinian' into, as appropriate, 'Gazan Arab Muslim' or (if it refers to those currently occupying Judea and Samaria, or within Israel) 'local Arab Muslim).

Terms such as 'militant' are mentally translated into 'jihadist' or 'jihad gangster' or 'jihad mobster'.

Hugh - did you get that Khaled Abu Toameh article I emailed you? The one that contains a perfectly priceless paragraph explaining why the Arab Muslims in Judea and Samaria and within Israel have, for the most part, been lying low?
