Our friend John C. Barile, who frequently comments here, has sent in the extraordinarily sad news that his seven-year-old daughter Joanna Maia, is gravely ill and is not expected to survive the day. Please keep Joanna, John, and her whole family in your prayers.
POSTSCRIPT: John writes in with terrible news: "Joanna Maia's heart stopped at 8:08 pm EDT. It was a quick and peaceful passage attended to by her loved ones."

Why do you assume that praying, and the use of medicines and doctors, are automatically mutually exclusive?
Christians - and Jews - have *always* been called into the vocation of physician. Funny that.
One of the great mandates Jesus gave to his disciples, was to 'heal the sick'...and all over the world, throughout Christian history, you will find devout Christians not only praying, but also engaging in practical hands-on care, using the best of what methods and medicines are available and known at the time...and also engaging in active research to find out new ways of healing.

Take comfort, my friend, that Joanna has climbed up on Our Lord Jesus Christ's lap and is asking Him to comfort her daddy.
As hard as this must be, and I can't even imagine it, how wonderful to have a little saint now in heaven who will ask God to keep you and your family safe, every day for the rest of your lives. What a gift she is.

My mother-in-law lost a daughter when she was seven to leukemia. This was before I met her son, over 35 years ago. She still has a special relationship with little Bridget.
In fact there is a joke in the family, because whenever mom goes somewhere and can't find a parking place she asks Bridget to find her one, and one always miraculously appears.
My mother-in-law talks about this with such faith and such an incredible satisfied smile on her face that I know this has helped her get through it. And dang if she doesn't always get a parking spot!
Sometimes my non-Catholic friends ask about why I pray to the saints because they've been taught it is wrong to do so. I ask them if when they have a car incident or an emergency, who do they call? They'll say a friend or my dad (or now, my son) and I remind them that saints are just friends that have died but are now in the presence of Our Lord so they are in an even better position to ask Him for help. And Jesus loves to help! Do we always say a prayer to God before asking a friend for help? Probably not because I think it is human nature to ask your friend first. God knows how we are and He allows us to continue this practice.
I recently learned, in the past couple of years, that the saints are most powerful on their feast days. That is the day that Christ honors them in heaven for honoring Him on earth and because they honored and many died for Him, He allows them extra special favors for friends and family who ask for their help on their special day. And He wants us to utilize these favors because by believing them, we prove our faith, and by being faithful, God gives us blessings.
Just think of it, a child of yours is now and for all eternity, in the presence of Jesus. And He is speaking with her right now, probably about you. How wonderful."

Take as much time away from this forum, as you need, to mourn, with your family. If we don't find you posting here for some time, we'll understand why.
If you feel able, let us know on what date the funeral or requiem mass is taking place.

another version of the Faure Sanctus - sung by the choir of Kings College Cambridge. Many of the younger boys singing in this choir would be little older than Joanna herself was.
