I will add something of a slightly philosophical nature.

I am surprised that this no sex, no food thing is presented as a shia issue. The shafii have the same point of view and this is detailed in their Shariah Handbook Reliance of the Traveller approved by Al-Azhar in Egypt. A man does not have to pay for the maintenance of his wife when:
- she does not offer sex
- she leaves the house without permission of her husband
- she goes on hajj
- she travels for her own business needs
- she fasts outside ramadan without permission of her husband

This is pure and simple mainstream Islam and has nothing to do with extremism. Remember Islam is the great world religion respected by Obama et al.

For most muslims this is unknown territory and too absurd to believe.

One only has to read of the personal struggles of apostates from Islam to free themselves from the Borg-like Islamic beliefs that had been inserted into them as children to get a sense of why this pernicious religion has endured in the world long after it should have vanished.

As to the situation in Afghanistan, JW readers know that the provision that Islam and Shariah are the basis of law in every Islamic regime (after all, that's why they're called "Islamic"), trumps anything else that may have been slipped into the Afghan constitution by Americans when it was written. In any legal showdown that might ensue over the matter of sex vs food, you can be sure that it will be done in such a way that Islam comes out on top.

You may remember him from 2001 as one of the Westernized Afganis often appearing on TV to explain events following our invasion. Although it would be nice to see Western reporters question all the candidates, including the new fair-haired boy AA, about this law, given the MSM reluctance to touch anything smacking of Islamically-inspired outrages like this, somehow I doubt it will.

Even if, by some daring display of bravado, a hijab bedecked Christianne Amanpour managed to ask such a question, one can fairly easily imagine the usual shucking and jiving response she would get, and in her summary she would somehow manage to miss the real point of the question and attribute whatever apparent difficulty there is to minor cultural differences - above all making sure there is no connection made to Islam.

It's a wonder how such "minority-fringe views of Islam" like this can have such huge influence in Islamic governments.

You warned back in 2003 of the incompatibility of the new Constitution and the fact that 'The draft is based on Islamic principles and recognizes that no law can be contrary to the sacred religion of Islam.' As you pointed out then, the "Islamic principles" will always trump the constitution, if there's conflict.
Learned posters above have made the same point.
Yet if you'd been on the Constitutional drafting committee and made that point, you'd surely have been labeled an "Islamophobe" by the "Islamophobiaphobes".
The fact is: the open and tolerant parts of the Constitution are effectively dead, killed by the dead weight of "Islamic principles"....

I appreciated all your comments in this thread. Sorry, Marisol, I'm with K_K on this one. Gratuitous swearing is offensive and unnecessary to transmit one's message. However, heinous can sometimes only be described using words that demonstrate the action's heinousness.
