SANTA ANA – A man was sentenced to 70 months in prison today for his role in a domestic terrorism plot to wage war on the United States by attacking Jewish synagogues and military bases.Hammad Riaz Samana is the fourth member of Jami'yyat Ul-Islam Is-Shaheeh, or JIS, a prison-founded group that wanted to make a political statement that also had plans to attack the Israeli consulate in Los Angeles and El Al Israel Airlines at the Los Angeles International Airport.
Samana was 21 when he was charged in the case in July 2005, along with the cell's mastermind, Kevin James, and members Levar Haley Washington and Gregory Patterson.
The group committed armed robberies of 11 gas stations, including two in Fullerton, to buy weapons and gear for the attacks. Authorities said gas stations were chosen as targets because of the symbolism of the oil.
Samana had a smaller role in the plot, and conducted computer research on the terrorism targets, and was the getaway driver for one of the armed robberies, according to U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney at today's sentencing hearing....
Washington is serving 264 months in prison, while James was sentenced to 192 months and Patterson was sentenced to 151 months, Carney said.
But Samana warranted a lighter sentence because he suffered from mental health issues, the judge said. Samana suffered from schizophrenia at the time of the crime.
"In light of Samana's mental health issues at the time of the offense, such a disparity is warranted and justified,'' Carney said....
On the one hand, he's in jail now (Yay!) But on the other hand now the prison dawa will be able to continue for 70 months (Boo!).

I have been using the moniker "Mo Foe" for over a year now, and actually closer to two. So, that's why I sign my posts "Mo Foe #1", because I believe I was the first one with that title.
Putting this sentence in perspective, the likely actual term of this sentence is less than one quarter the maximum for one count of mail fraud/swindling (20 years, 30 years if the victim is a financial institution).
What's truly amazing is that he acted as a getaway driver in an armed robbery and still received such a light sentence. I'd call it a wrist slap, but it's more like a massage.
I think schizophrenic genocidal terror plotters are actually MORE dangerous and not meriting a downward departure from guidelines. But apparently that view is not shared by Judge Carney, who's loosing this guy back on the streets in four years (with gain time).
Of course it's far more likely Samana is a good actor and not actually schizophrenic.
Okay so he is schizophrenic? Why then will he be placed in the general prison population? If he is mentally ill he should be placed in a locked facility for the mentally ill. They do exist.
Next he should be treated. He needs medication for LIFE. You do NOT get better from schizophrenia, it is a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Yes, obviously he does suffer from mental health "issues." But the judge's PC MC filters were obviously in place, which prevented his correctly diagnosing the underlying source of the mental illness, when he made this ruling. So now we'll soon have another known mental case back out on the streets, his underlying beliefs intact and unshaken, able to continue where he left off. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

It seem that Muslims , once captured for various terroristic thing, often claims mental instability...sure...I bet they pray five time a day and it hasn't helped.
I'm with you Ice Star--he should get more not less--and in a locked mental health facility. How ridiculous to get 70 months for this type of conspiracy (and the guy was already a criminal). . . I have to wonder, if he'd been a schizophrenic non-Muslim plotting to blow up a mosque, then what???

He seemed to be quite capable of performing his various tasks despite his diability. The judge has gravely erred here. Hammad Riaz Samana should have been put in indefinite psychiatric detention, if he was in fact mentally ill.

She's the kind of person who should be called in as expert witness to interview and examine the perp - including such things as doing a brain scan - and determine whether what's wrong with him is a. Islam all by itself, screwing up what might otherwise have been a normal human or b. Islam plus an inherited biochemical brain disorder.
Sane enough to work at Barnes & Noble, former employee, Hammad Samana (waiting in psych ward, not jail, since 2005) is thankful to Judge Carney for granting full release in under 2-years time for plotting to kill Jewish Los Angelenos.
Another L.A. judge was even more liberal in a case against those who plotted to AND MANAGED TO KILL a Jewish Los Angeles man!
