Honor killing in Jordan: Muslim shoots his 16-year-old niece, a rape victim, nine times in the head and back

How did she sully that honor? By being raped.

In 2003 the Jordanian Parliament voted down on Islamic grounds a provision designed to stiffen penalties for honor killings. Al-Jazeera reported that "Islamists and conservatives said the laws violated religious traditions and would destroy families and values."

AMMAN - Criminal Prosecutor Ashraf Abdullah on Tuesday charged a 39-year-old man with the premeditated murder of his niece in the latest so-called honour crime to take place in Jordan.
The 16-year-old victim, who was not identified by officials, was shot nine times in the head and back, allegedly by her uncle, at her home in an Amman neighbourhood.

The police found the uncle, a construction worker, walking on the street with the gun still his hand, the source said.

Upon questioning, the uncle told the police that he killed his “niece to cleanse his family’s honour,” the source added.

A second source told The Jordan Times that the girl was a victim of incestuous rape by two of her relatives almost 11 months ago and became pregnant.

“The victim delivered a baby boy almost two months ago with the knowledge of her father who took her to the hospital and supported her since she was a rape victim,” the source said.

But four days ago, the uncle “claimed that he learned of the incident and decided to kill her in the name of family honour,” the source added.

On Tuesday, the suspect grabbed a gun and headed to his brother’s house, the source said, adding that “he went to the victim’s room and shot her nine times while she was asleep and left without uttering a word”....

"Remember, the next time you are told this is merely "cultural" and "has nothing to do with Islam" that 1) these "honor" killings take place in Jordan, Syria, Iraq, among the "Palestinian" Arabs, and in Turkey, and all over the Muslim world, and it is not so much the fact of the killings as the fact that Muslim states have great difficulty in punishing the killers that merits our vigilant attention

2) Islam permits fathers to go unpunished for killing their own children for reasons deemed legitimate. That is why it has been so difficult in Jordan, for example (with its Son-of-Plucky-Little-King Hussein, King Abdullah), to pass legislation that would punish such killings. It goes against both the spirit and the letter of Islam.

That is the point: to punish male relatives for killing female relatives in order to preserve family "honor" may indeed go back to the pre-islamic Arab customs, but it has become part of Islam, and as part of Islam, cannot easily be dislodged. For both the spirit and the letter of Islam are on the side of those doing the killing.

This has to be mentioned, again and again, so that the apologists for Islam do not have their sly way, as they so often do."

HEARTOFALIONESS said - "If honor killings are supposedly only a "cultural" thing in Islam, and allegedly not an inherent aspect of Islamic ideology, perhaps some of the Muslim bloggers who visit this site to hone their al taqiyyah can comment on why the vast majority (if not ALL) of the honor killings committed in the U.S. or Canada are perpetrated by Muslims - Muslims who, for the most part, have lived in their adopted countries for a very long time, or have been born and raised there. My fellow infidels know the answer - assimilation of non-native Muslims into Western society is rarer than hen's teeth. I find it telling that the uncle did not feel it necessary to kill those two relatives to cleanse the family honour. Having two rapists in the family is perfectly OK, apparently.

Maybe it was a maternal relative who raped her but if so, who's going to cleanse the honor of that family, or were both families "cleansed" in one fell swoop?
