Hamas has instructed schoolgirls in the Gaza Strip to wear the jilbab (Islamic long-sleeved dress) and head scarves or face being expelled from school.
The movement has also banned girls from wearing jeans at school.
The latest order follows a similar directive that was issued earlier this month by a local judge requiring all female lawyers who appear in the Gaza Strip's courts to wear the hijab (Islamic head scarf).
The cases are seen in the context of Hamas's efforts to enforce strict Islamic laws throughout the Strip.
Until a few years ago, many Gazan schools endorsed jeans or trousers as an official uniform for girls. But since Hamas seized full control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007, schools have come under intense pressure to force girls to dress in accordance with Islamic rules.
A source in the Hamas-controlled Education Ministry said that his ministry's policy was to allow each school administration to decide on the type of clothes students should wear.
According to the source, the ministry decided this year to exempt all students from wearing school uniforms due to the financial crisis in the Gaza Strip.
"Headmasters and headmistresses have been given a green light to decide on what type of clothes the students should wear," the source said. "In many schools, the administrations, in coordination with the families, decided to impose hijabs and jilbabs on girls."
A veteran journalist in the Gaza Strip said that most girls who returned to schools that reopened on Sunday were seen dressed in traditional Islamic clothes.
He noted, for instance, that at the Maghazi Girls Secondary School in the center of the Gaza Strip, "about 95 percent" of the girls showed up wearing jilbabs.
"The few who came to school wearing jeans were warned that they would be expelled if they did not wear jilbabs," the journalist told The Jerusalem Post....

Well, seen by Taliban standards, Hamas is down right radical, I mean what with letting girls go to school and such, irrespective of the issue of proper attire. C'mon, can't have young females learning to read and all that (but I do wonder what those many "moderate" Taliban think of this-----Hmmm, have to write the White House about this one).
Or might it be OK if girls go to school and cover 95% of their too desirable bodies for young Muslim males, who can't really help themselves after all and, what the hell, why should they? I mean, ain't it obvious, it's females who are at fault for being desirable in the first place, right? And, while we're at it, we just don't have enough circumcisers out there of the female pudendum, now do we?
The larger point here is obvious: Muslims will go after each other, including in a deadly way, if they're not going after kuffaars. The sickness which is Islam has no end to it. That's why it must be ended just as other totalitarian systems had to be.

It is pretty amazing that the Islamists accuse Westerners of being sexually obsessed. I would say that a society that has men who find young girls and women in their 80's a sexual temptation have nothing on the West.

Wellington raises an intersting point. Why do some muslims let the girls go to school at all? The reason probably has nothing to do with liberalism. Rather I suspect, there is a fatwa that girls may go to school so long as they are being educated in jihad. The learned opinion holds that so long as girls are being taught the jihad religious obligatory practice to murder Jews, Israelis and other infidels it is okay for them to be in school for this reason and this reason alone. This fatwa allowing education for jihad is consistent with the jihad idea that establishes in islam even a girl does not need permission from her father to go murder infidels.
Warned today...,expelled tomorrow, beaten, tortured and raped the day after that...Jeans and a warning unheeded, is sufficient reason for an 'honor killing'...
