"Islamist Militants Restrict Somali Wedding Celebrations," from VOA News, August 20:
In a typical Somali wedding, women wear brightly colored gowns, gold jewelry and elaborate hairstyles. They dance with men to the tunes of Somali love songs, performed by a vocalist and a pianist.
But in recent months, traditional wedding celebrations have been banned. Islamist groups have seized control in several parts of Somalia and say the restrictions are in line with the teachings of Islam.
Music and dancing are no longer allowed. The groups say Islam forbids the mingling of women and men. Somali Islamist militants carry their weapons as they patrol the streets of northern Mogadishu

Convoys carrying family and friends of the couple have also been banned. The Islamists allow only three cars at a wedding and check to make sure the vehicles are carrying only the immediate families of the couple.
Islamist militant groups are adamant about imposing Islamic Sharia law in Somalia and banning any form of entertainment they deem to be un-Islamic.
No dancing, no music
Hussein Yusuf Anabore a long time wedding planner remembers how weddings used to be elaborate.
“After the bride has been picked up convoys of cars blaring Somali music would escort her to the wedding venue. Extended family members and participants would clap and cheer, with everyone dancing and mingling. These days, people just conduct prayer services, and dancing is not permitted," Anabore laments.
Some of the areas’ bachelors favor the restrictions. They say the changes will completely eliminate unnecessary expenses. Even the women admit the restrictions favor the men.
For those residing in the cities of Marka and Kismayo, where hard-line Islamist groups are in control, the change is hard to embrace. Many are disheartened, especially over no longer being allowed to film the weddings. They say they intend to be married only once, and the rules deprive them of being able to record a memorable moment in their lives.
From Helmand to Gaza, Minneapolis to Mogadishu, the hatred of beauty, self-expression art and sheer enjoyment is a hallmark of Islam and Sharia.
Other notable examples are the destruction by the Taliban of the Buddhas of Banyam, or Hamas killing celebrants at a Christian wedding in Gaza for playing music.
Fortunately, it is also one of the agents that may destroy it from within - a prime force in the undermining of the Iranian Mullahcracy by Iranian youth (who will risk torture and jail to attend a secret rock concert), for example.

This distinctly proves that Islam is not from God as being a Christian I have often heard actual accounts of God giving people a visit to Heaven and many have remarked on the beautiful music there.
Apparently, many composers such as Beethoven and Bach etc. their music was originally from Heaven.
How amazing is that!!
Oh well, don't we know that the more mahoundian Somalia gets, and the more sharia there is, the closer to mahoundian standards of perfection and paradise that open sewer gets?

Um, Islam has been in sub-Saharan Africa for over 1000 years, and in North Africa since the 8th century.
The Muslims in this story trying to play music and have fun -- i.e., the seemingly hapless victims -- are also culpable: they are more or less passively co-dependent enablers of the grotesque monster that is now persecuting them, and as such are thus simultaneously ridiculous, pathetic, morally bankrupt and more or less unwitting colluders in the dangerous fanaticism of normative Islam.

Could it be that mahoundian celebrations in this case are like the parties thrown by some people after funerals? Any non-penis possessing mahoundian half-man (those individuals known in the West as women, I mean) that has any sense sure must feel that the day she ties the knot with a mahoundian male might as well be called her burial day.

It suddenly struck me that, perhaps, given the evils that pass for marriage (young girls, close relatives, etc.) in Islam, their SHAME keeps them from celebrating--it's almost that they know exactly how horrible their practices are and want to sneak them in below the radar....any joy and happiness is gone.

Given the many practices these Somali Muslims adhere to, it's difficult to feel any sympathy for them being "deprived" of their music. They're getting exactly what they deserve. What goes around comes around.
Compare the stern austerity of the mosque service with the joy and vibrancy of black Gospel music, and you catch a glimpse of the challenges facing Muslim prosletyzers as they try to make further inroads into the African-American community.
Also, don't forget that in 2006 more than 1,500 Somalian Muslims demonstrated in Peavey Park in Minneapolis, Minnesota -- in favor of the jihad in their home country that has been resulting in this type of militantly fascist puritanism.

This is so true, Hesperado--all over the Muslim world, more "moderate"--or less observant--Muslims are targeted by their more devout brothers--and yet, ultimately, they have no real answer for the promoters of Jihad and Shari'ah.
And really, how could they have? As long as Islam is the yardstick, the "extremists" are *right*. The only places that are even slightly livable in Dar-al-Islam are places where imposition of Muslim law has become lax--in other words, where it is *less Muslim*.
As much as Infidels have suffered at the hands of Islam, it is always Muslims who have suffered the most. Given the malignant tenets of Islam, I don't see that ever changing.
So many thoughts:
Last first...there are so many multi-culti types in our Minneapolis college town who think a little sharia wouldn't hurt anyone; that it's just for others to be happy and won't affect them. They think "What's wrong with a little modesty?" or "How quaint. They don't listen to music." or "They're so observant...what a neat culture for them."
Then, when the sharia becomes enforced by violence (honor killings, forced abductions for marriage), they don't realize that it only takes that "tiny minority" to enforce its practices on people who thought they could have it both ways.
Secondly, Muslims who think they can have it both ways are kidding themselves. It's like joining the Klan because you like the believers' perverse adherence to faith, and not understanding that they are murderers and that you are now in a group that practices assault, extortion, murder and mayhem as a tenet of belief. They control your life arc and you realize that as a Muslim, you are in for a penny, in for a pound.
The only thing protecting (most) American Muslims is this country's rule of law.

That's the essential difference between Islam and Christianity. Islam is like some warped sect of Protestantism that bans organ music and is joyless and cheerless -- only in Christianity, such sects remain tiny and unrepresentative, whereas in Islam, such views are dominant, mainstream and international.

My 20 year old son is passionate about music, and he currently attends a four year Christian Music Academy. You can't tell me that God isn't behind his music. Listening to him sing and play his guitar makes me feel as though I've entered into the very presence of God! Music can be Joyous, Healing, and a Blessing to us all; and since Islam is VOID of these three attributes, then of course it grates on their unholy, unreasonable and unrighteous belief system.
