Somali Islamist group al Shabaab is forcibly removing gold and silver teeth from residents in southern Somalia because it says they contravene strict religious law, locals from a coastal town said on Monday.Residents in Marka say al Shabaab has been rounding up anyone seen with a silver or gold tooth and taking them to a masked man who then rips them out using basic tools.
"I never thought al Shabaab would see my denture as a sin. They took me to their station and removed my silver tooth," resident Bashir told Reuters.
"I met several men and women whose dentures were being pulled out by a masked man they called a doctor. The doctor used a pincer or his gloved hand depending on the strength of the tooth," Bashir said.
"As you smile your silver tooth accuses you. I was at a counter with my friend when three armed al Shabaab ordered me to follow them," he added. "I am afraid they want to make money from taking all this precious metal."
Al Shabaab officials declined to comment.

More and more, I have come to believe that this is incorrect. You hear a lot of stories about Islamic charities serving as "fronts" for Jihad funding, but I believe it is worse than this.
One of the primary purposes--perhaps *the primary purpose* of Zakat is funding the spread of Islam, which can include things such as Da'wa and madrasses--bad enough--but can also involve *funding hard-core Jihad*.
Funding what Westerners--or, indeed, most people--would consider "charity" is much less a priority in the Muslim world.
That is one of the major reasons that most genuine charities serving the Muslim world--providing medical care, and running schools and orphanages--are run by Westerners, despite the great Muslim oil wealth.

Yeah, some people do indeed use gold teeth for "fashion and beauty"--its an inner city gangsta thing here--but in most places outside the West and a few other places such as Japan and South Korea, where they have porcelain veneers--it is just dentistry.
In many cases, you have the choice of gold--or missing teeth. I myself have a few silver fillings from when I was a child. What could be less "Islamic" than decent dental health?

MMEDEFARGE said - I went to E Germany in 1989 and saw loads of golden smiles flashing in the candle lit bars. Went back a few years later - all gone. Replaced by Western white fillings. Will the muslims start wrenching these white fillings out of mouths next, or won't they know the difference between filled and not filled, which is the point of white fillings, ie. more aesthetically pleasing, natural looking.
Maybe muslim dentists out there (are there any?) will get the chop next, for using non koranic anaesthesia, as well as white fillings. Maybe in that case brown fillings would be more appropriate than white for muslims. If there aren't any muslim dentists in muslim lands, DIY technique borrowed from mud hut construction would likely suffice for fillings. Life is grand in the 7th century AD.

My father was stationed in Germany during the occupation thereof and my 2 brothers and sister went with. I was not yet a glimmer in my fathers eye.
Still, I heard the stories of what they saw when visiting concentration camps.
