That she was abused doesn't surprise me. Islam produces misogynist men,who become abusive husbands and fathers.

What is appalling is that no one called child protective services. She should have been removed from that house long ago.

Perhaps she has a case against the school for not reporting this.

There's another salient issue, for those who have read the piece:

This is *extremely* important. This is not just an issue of a girl from an abusive home--bad enough--it is the old story of "honor" being not a personal issue, or even a family issue, but being considered, among Muslims, a *community* issue.

Even if this father were sincere about his peaceful desire to see his daughter return home--unlikely, in any event--there is a good chance that the Muslim community would not be so sanguine about it.

This girl is in extreme danger if she returns to Ohio.

I've sent my letter! Here's hoping that Gov. Crist will protect Rivqa from her father.

I have heard that scools in America take childen wanderings seriously. However Rifqa probably tried to milk situations too often...fell down playing...blame it on my dad, her parents look like decent people and I'm sure they love their muslim daughter very much.

I suspect this will end with Rifqa restored to her parents, and the family speedily returned to Sri Lanka, where she will be returned "to her roots" by means of a marriage to Uncle Ahmed, who will beat the bejesus (pun intended) out of her on a daily basis.

Yommie - the old "she must have gotten the bruises from falling down" is the oldest denial used by abusers to explain the marks on their victims.

The people with this knowledge about prior abuse need to write to the Florida _and_ the Ohio authorities about it, giving their names. Seriously, they need to be willing to come forward. I realize this is risky for them in Ohio, but this is the only kind of information that is likely to have weight with child & family services. If, God forbid, she is sent back to Ohio, child welfare will have to launch an investigation. At that point, her only hope for getting away from her parents and extended family will come from information given to Ohio DCF. I can fully understand why people are afraid, but if they want to save her, they have to give their information to the proper authorities with their contact info. so the authorities can get back to them and talk to them if necessary.

What an upside-down Orwellian country we now live in. This is the insanity we witness daily. Americans go batsh_t over a man who financed dog fights, but a young girl's consitutional freedoms are menaced as our own government may return her to her brutally abusive Moslem father and... nothing. I am writing to implore you to help guide a legal and just outcome for Rifqa Bary. She is truly in peril if she is returned to her family. She has endured years of beatings, being forced to wear the hijab, hiding her faith, and surrounded by attendees of a mosque whose leaders espouse the most vile, racists and exceptionalist views.

This is documented.

I am not particularly religious, and I don't care whether she escaped to Pastor Lorenz or to a youth shelter: she should be protected at all costs from her family, and the justness of the American government should be a beacon to all Americans. A child who has been threatened with damage or death should by all means be removed from her home, and sheltered if she leaves on her own.

Her parents' lives are forfeit if they do not kill her, and they will probably try to make her leave the country to accomplish just that. It is usually the brother or uncles that does it, and her brother would then get a more lenient sentence due to his "youth".

I propose an elegant solution: Could Ms. Bary simply file for emancipation, as I did as a seventeen-year old in Florida back in the eighties? She could then change her name and live wherever she likes and under anyone's protection or assistance should she need it.

An underground railroad should exist for these girls, and in the guiding hand of our justice system.

Please keep Rifqa safe; there have been so many killed already to satisfy blood claims for a barbaric society, safely esconced here in the United States.

I've been following this with interest, mainly I suppose because it
deals with the possible death of a young woman for exercising her right
to freedom of religion and freedom of choice.
I sincerely hope that the United States Government isn't going to
connive in judicial murder by returning her to her abusive father, who
obviously is a keen follower of the religion of peace, and knowledgeable
in the many verses in the Koran, Hadith and Sunnah, that teach that
women, even one's own blood, should be treated like dirt.
It's bad enough in the UK (a little island of the coast of Europe), with
a "counterfeit presentation of a man", leading the country and doing
embarrassingly subservient and slimy youtube broadcasts to our Islamic
parasites, without the United States joining in as well. The irony,
seeing of one evil, vicious and nasty collective ideology (communism),

I think something should be said.

I am a Christian, and naturally when I hear of Rifqa facing possible death at Muslim hands after having converted from Islam to Christianity - and this in a western country that supposedly has freedom of religion - I am both angry and sad, and I am praying like blazes.

But the point must be made: had Rifqa simply left Islam, in order to identify as an atheist (like Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Wafa Sultan) or as an agnostic (Ali Sina), or had she left Islam because she wanted to practise Buddhism or Taoism or Native American beliefs...or if she were running away because she had acquired a lovely Jewish or Hindu boyfriend whom, in due time, she intended to marry and whom she did *not* intend to try to persuade to become a Muslim...then she would be just as much in danger, and I would be praying for her just as fervently, and the Americans here (Christians, Jews, atheists, agnostics, everybody) would be working just as hard to persuade their powers that be, to step in to protect her right to freedom of conscience, and to save her from her murderous parents and from the Muslim Mob that is bound to kill her if she tries to leave.
