The Netherlands Islamic Federation (NIF) had put forward a number of statements by the Party for Freedom (PVV) leader in a summary injunction. The NIF considered that Wilders had broken the law by comparing Islam with Fascism, calling the Koran the Islamic version of Hitler's Mein Kampf and the Prophet Mohammed a barbarian. All remarks are legal, the court decided yesterday.
The foundation demanded that Wilders take back his statements. But the court said: "A parliamentarian must be able to put forward his views." And "the right of freedom of speech is decisive here."
Wilders does not have to make a correction. This would according to the court be the same as a forced apology and therefore at odds with the principle of freedom of speech. "Regret cannot be forced with a verdict," according to the ruling.
According to the court, Fascism must be viewed more broadly than the NIF does. The federation of Turkish Muslims associates the term with "malignancies of Nazi Germany" such as the Holocaust. NIF did not disprove that ideas are prevalent in Islam that are at odds with democratic principles. The group also did not succeed, according to the judge, in refuting Wilders' view of Mohammed being a barbarian.

Saudi Arabia didn't ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child until 1996, and then with the expected caveat that "with respect to all such articles as are in conflict with the provisions of Islamic law" that Islamic law--that is--Shari'ah--would prevail.
Hence the plight of this poor little girl and so many of her sisters.
Mothers have few rights in Saudi Arabia regarding their children, children are subject to the death penalty, girls are subject to forced under-age marriages like the little girl above, and honor killings of children are rife--including a Saudi man who recently murdered his daughter for *Using Facebook*.
In a sane world, Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen would respond to Wilders by saying that "We do not wish to offend pigs: please choose a more suitable metaphor and we shall be happy to oblige otherwise in your request."

Wilders has put Verhagen in a very difficult position, as Robert Spencer points out.
If Verhagen refuses to express repugnance to the Saudi ambassador, someone might suggest that Verhagen therefore doesn't disapprove of 80 yr olds marrying 10 yr olds, nor of Muhammad consummating marriage with a 9 year old.
But if Verhagen does express disgust, as Wilders requests, well then Verhagen will soon be joining Wilders under 24-hour guard from jihadists and from any Muslims who follow the core Islamic texts' attitude toward apostates (kill 'em).
It will be a bit tricky for Verhagen to condemn Wilders' comparison of Muhammad with a pig.
But in the end I expect it won't be too difficult for Verhagen to worm his way out of the spot Wilders has put him in. He might say something like, "yes, of course today it's disgusting, but we must realize that in Muhammad's day child marriage was completely common in many parts of the world..."
But it might turn out to be a difficult position for Verhagen. Let's hope so.
