Malaysian appeals court upholds caning for former model caught drinking beer

The outcome of this appeals process will set a precedent for the future of Malaysian law. If the judiciary does not challenge this type of punishment, it will not only pave the way for more canings, but also invite pressure for even more Sharia.

An update on this story. "Malaysia upholds woman's caning," from BBC News, September 28:

An Islamic court in Malaysia has upheld a sentence of six strokes of the cane handed to a Muslim woman who was caught drinking beer in public.
The court appeals panel in Pahang state ruled the sentence on 32-year-old Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was just.
No date was set for the caning, but if it goes ahead, Shukarno will be the first Malaysian woman to be caned.
The case has caused controversy in Malaysia, where Muslims are subject to Islamic law in personal matters.
While drinking alcohol is forbidden for Muslims, prosecutions are rare.
Analysts say the government fears that the punishment could damage Malaysia's reputation abroad.
Kartika Sari Dewa Shukarno, a mother of two, was arrested for drinking beer in a beachfront hotel in December 2007.
She previously asked that her punishment be carried out in public, triggering a debate over the use of Islamic laws in the moderate Muslim country.

Are they going to cane her or spank her? One is free, other can be expensive.

Since fruit contains alcohol, can we assume that all fruit eaters will be punished as well?

What is the mahoundian malay majority in Malaysia trying to accomplish with this? I guess I know... When they want to make things better for themselves, there's no studying, working harder or striving to be better individuals (i.e., better individuals from a Western perspective.) Their disordered, brainwashed, Mein-Qurampf-obsessed minds can only see one thing to do towards that goal: more mahoundianism, more sharia, more devotion to mahound's imaginary alter-ego allah, so that it (not he) can "shower them with blessings" greater than those that Malaysian ethnic Indian Hindus and Chinese Buddhists have accomplished through their hard work, despite the hurdles placed in their way by the pro-mahoundian affirmative-action scheme known as bumimputra.

And, were it not for the hard work done by those Hindus and Buddhists, would Malaysia have ever had any economic success to boast of? Would it ever have been included among the Asian Tigers when it comes to its economy? It would probably be like Egypt north of Australia, but without American taxpayers' money given out to them as jizya. Should those malay mahoundians eventually get carried away by the sharia bug and start to demand that it be imposed on Malaysia's Hindus and Buddhists as well, that country might still go down that self-destructive path of "opensewerization", for there is absolutely nothing that resists mahoundianism's inherent ability to destroy everything it touches when it's not beaten back or kept in check by the iron fist of dictatorial regimes.

I think it is really important that we reconsider Malay actions from now on.

"In heaven there is no beer
That's why we drink it here."

Beer was another ancient invention in order to produce a potable drink. In Islam, even if the well has dead animal carcasses in it, the water is still pure. That's what Muhammed said.................

I'm waiting for AbdullahMikhail to post and claim that the prophet never said that.

Still waiting.........

Fruit doesn't contain alcohol until it is fermented with some form of bacterial yeast present.

Beer, if sipped slowly enough will not get you intoxicated
because the alcohol is given time to absorb and exit the body quickly.
If she was drunk when she was caught then she is guilty.
If she wasn't drunk when caught by the authorities then she is innocent.
She still doesn't deserve caning.

Muslims are not only psycopaths but they are medieval sadists. It makes me wonder how a religioncan keep people in the dark ages for 1400 years. I wonder if they'll ever experience a renaissance? Doubtful.

Sheesh!

Mahoundians should have no issue with intoxication, since that's what their sick little cult is... Or don't they have to be high to believe that trees and stones will talk to them about Jews hiding behind them?

Visit exiting Malaysia!

Great place for S & M...

Somehow I never had a knack for it, but hey: who are we to judge?

Some people like it...

Believe me Malaysia sux I was there for 15 minutes a few months back

The reason for this is because they have only one smoking area in KL airport which has two terminals, so it was easier to go through immigration than to go to the terminal that had the smoking area.

If, God forbid, the canning takes place it should make people and institutions think twice about any relationships with Malaysia.
As for al-Kidya's wondering, my theory is that most followers of Islam don't ever think that they may be a victim of Sharia barbarity but will only be happy bystanders.
It is similar to religions that preach than only, let's say 110,000, of their members will go to heaven and the religion has millions of members.

Wait...what KIND of beer was it?

Because, at least to these taste buds, there exist certain types and/or brands of beer (those that barely qualify as beer) that may, in fact, warrant a good caning were one to be caught consuming them. :D
