"For such efforts, Musharraf and the Pakistani government have been paid handsomely, receiving more than $10 billion in American money since 2001....For years, the survival of Pakistan's military and civilian leaders has depended on a double game: assuring the United States that they were vigorously repressing Islamic militants -- and in some cases actually doing so -- while simultaneously tolerating and assisting the same militants." -- New York Times, September 7, 2008
Monumental Chutzpah Alert: the U.S. paid Pakistan to fight against the jihadis, Pakistan funneled much of the money to the same jihadis, and now Pakistan wants to get reimbursed. How long are we going to let Pakistan drain us before we realize they are not on our side?
"Pakistan: President urges US to reimburse $1.6 bn for terror war," from AKI, September 23 (thanks to C. Cantoni):
Islamabad, 23 Sept. (AKI/DAWN) - Pakistan's president Asif Ali Zardari has urged the United States government to reimburse the 1.6 billion dollars that Pakistan spent on fighting extremism in the tribal areas earlier this year.
The United States pays Pakistan for the anti-extremist operations from a special account called the Coalition Support Fund. Pakistan has not been paid for more than a year, Pakistani daily Dawn said.
President Zardari made this demand in two separate meetings with US officials including special envoy Richard Holbrooke.
President Zardari also called for an early realisation of about six billion dollars pledged to Pakistan in the Tokyo conference earlier this year where international donors promised to help Pakistan overcome its economic crisis.
The President also sought an early adoption of the Kerry-Lugar Bill that may bring in another 1.5 billion dollars of annual US assistance over a period of five years....
Good old reliable Muslims.
A six-part essay on Pakistan, and its long history, ever since the days of CENTO more than a half-century ago, of fooling the Americans into trusting the Pakistani generals (and the zamindars who intermittently were allowed to be the public face of Pakistani rule), was recently put up at JW, and if you put into the JW search engine "We Walked Away From Them Twice" and "Fitzgerald" you will find all six.
You can also google "Pressler Amendment" and "Hugh Fitzgerald."
Talk about shooting our selves in the foot.
Perhaps it is better to call this an economic amputation.
There is only one country in the whole of the middle east that is our friend, and our traitor Government treats her like an enemy.
Pakistan is not our friend.
Afganistan is not our friend.
Egypt is not our friend.
Syria is not our friend.
Lybia is not our friend.
Iraq is not our friend.
Iran is not our friend.
Saudi Arabia is not our friend.
ISLAM IS NOT OUR FRIEND.
ISRAEL IS OUR FRIEND.
The West needs to listen to Walid Shoebat. He has said that Islam is not a religion of peace as often repeated by people in the West. This former terrorist is now considered an'ISLAMAPHOBE.'
My first impulse is to say NO.
I've had some time to think about it and my second, third, fourth and fifth impulse is to say NO even louder.
Pakistan, as with all other Islamic nations, is the enemy. Wake up America! We cannot continue borrowing from the Chinese & Saudis to subsidise the Jihad against us. Good, honest, US citizens are in extreme financial difficulties....Stop it!
(Good interview with Robert on the Peter Boyles Show--KHOW Denver..... if you missed it, they have free podcasts available!)
"How long are we going to let Pakistan drain us before we realize they are not on our side?"
For as long as those who make policy think they can allow themselves to be swayed by some rectitudinous straight-talking (so they think) general, such as Musharraf, or by somone who is the widower of a charmer who went to Radcliffe and Oxford and therefore simply must be okay, or those who consult with their "advisers on Islam" who are themselves charming and plausible Muslims quite eager to deflect attention from the texts and tenets and attitudes of the Faith, and past masters at doing so, or for as long as Robert Gates insists on ignoring the nature of Islam and, above all, the pursuing of Jihad (the struggle to remove all obstacles to the spread, and then the dominance, of Islam, everywhere) in the heart of the West, Europe, where through deployment of the Money Weapon, well-financed campaigns of Da'wa that prey on the economically and psychically marginal, and demographic conquest, openly boasted about by many Muslims and predicted openly, before Western audiences, by both the Algerian leader Boumediene and later by Muammar Qaddafy, or for as long as John Kerry, now running the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, allows himself to draw conclusions about Pakistan (and its "need" for more American billions -- not his billiions, bien entendu, but our money, the money that so many of the very richest Senators and others in Washington find it so satisfying to give away here, and there, and everywhere, because it's all so exciting, and the travel and the peole so interesting, and besides, in a way it helps salve their own consciences and misdirected guilt)-- allows himself to be charmed by Hasan Haqqani, that cheat and charmer, and Mahnaz Ispahani, his even more charming wife. The truest corridors of power for such people are the dinner parties.
That's how long "we are going to let Pakistan drain us.".
Do Porkis want money? How about they look at India, huh? Though still facing a hell of a lot of challenges, including the fact that the majority of its population is quite poor, India's economy has grown a lot in recent years; and, judging by the number of Indian university graduates working in Silicon Valley, there doesn't seem to be any retrograde force holding its intellectual progress back.
Ah, but there's one little detail that makes it difficult for Porkistan to look at India as an example, isn't there? Mahoundianism is only followed by a minority of Indians. That's why Porkistan will remain up to its neck in camel dung, but happy to know that Mein Qurampf tells its population that they're "the best of peoples", instead of trying to cease to be an utter social, economic, intellectual and political failure by ditching mahound-worshipping in favor of Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and a few other beliefs (or lack thereof) that Indians can mostly freely follow in their country.
If Porki's president want anything from the West, he should be given the obliteration of their nuclear weapons sites and a big flippin' of the bird.
I suggest a "Blue Moon" policy whereby Pakistan gets a meagre donation "once in a blue moon". If they're STILL arguing over where the moon is,all the money in the world won't help them.

I see it on a white background.
Excuse me, I knew Pakistan wasn't sincere in their 'fight' against terror. (stupid name too - it should have been a fight against thugs killing for a god called mohammed, oh er I mean allah)
Let me see - I could probably count on two hands the #3, or #4, guys down on the list of terror suspects that were 'caught' by Pakistan (who were probably handed over, or killed, because they were screwups, or the upper 'management' didn't like them, and it was the easiest way to fire them by saying they caught them). Or they were 'martyrs for the cause' and handed over so as to make sure the money kept on flowing.
I mean... DUH!!! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what Pakistan is all about and that we were dumping money into 'terrorist paradise'!

So, what does that say about the president, and his gang of eco-thugs?

Pakistan would be close to the top of a list of countries that it would be better for the entire world if they didn't exist. Really, imagine no Pakistan. What would be the downside?
Wellington,
What would you propose we do? Concrete it over or flood it?
I can see it on white background, as the page loads in. But it eventually loads a black background. To read the page I have to stop the browser from loading the page completely. Very annoying. I'm sure I'm not the only one here on Firefox 3.5.3. Anyone?

I had this problem before I upgraded to a newer version of Firefox. My guess is that there was too much information on the home page for it to display.
As a work-around--I found that I *could* see the headlines--just not the text. So I would click on the *comments* section of each story I wanted to read, then go to the top and read that article. Firefox seemed to have less trouble with the amount of information displayed article by article.
Hope this works for you. Still, a hassle. I'd try to upgrade if your computer can handle it. Please let us know if any of this works for you.
Question_Everything!. Hmmm. Think we could? But really, in all seriousness I meant that it would have been better for the world if no Pakistan had ever come into being in the first place. What were the alternatives? Among others would have been the preservation of British India in tact, though I realize this would not have been a panacea either, again because of Islam, though by now perhaps Islam in what is now Pakistan would be more muted than it is under this scenario because, after all, what do folks in Pakistan have to cling to other than Islam? Pakistan divided into a number of smaller political entities rather than the chaotic colossus that it is should also be entertained as what would have constituted a better choice. And then there's the reality that just because one doesn't have an alternative to a bad thing, it doesn't mean that you cease seeing it as bad. Again, I would ask what would be the downside to the world were there no Pakistan? Maybe you can provide one or more reasons but I'm fresh out on this one. Oh yeah, mass conversion by Pakistanis to other religions like Christianity and Buddhism would certainly help immensely, but this ain't gonna' happen. No, the world is stuck with this pretty much useless country called Pakistan and it's a burden to many PRECISELY because it is overwhelmingly Islamic.
I wasn't joking, Wellington.
Think of how it would help our current unemployment situation.
Wellington,
Wouldn't it be quicker to just ban islam worldwide?
Ban Islam worldwide? Lovely sentiment but you could no more do that than ban Marxism or fascism worldwide. Totalitarian ideologies can't be banned by free societies; they must be discredited within freedom's framework. Has worked with Marxism and Nazism. The same must be done with Islam but it will be deuce difficult because Islam is the most nefarious (and deceptive)totalitarian ideology of all time.
"Totalitarian ideologies can't be banned by free societies"
They can if they are actively pursuing violent sedition.
Like Pakistan is going to help us fight against the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Exactly what planet in Washington, DC located on? Because they sure as hell do not have any common sense with regards to the Pakistani government.
Yes, free societies allow complete freedom of belief but not necessarily acting upon beliefs and so even assuming Islam is seditious to Western Civilization (it is) it is not enough (never banned the Communist Party in America as another example). Free societies punish the act, not the thought, and so we can prosecute people who act upon seditious ideas but we won't ban the idea itself precisely because freedom is cherished, something always lost on totalitarians even though they take advantage of Western freedoms at times in order to end them. Meanwhile, discrediting Islam is another route to finally getting rid of it as a threat to the West.
