I think much of Islam's history has been cleansed - one because no one wanted to offend them and two - your average Muslim would not see for ex. the killing of 80-100 million to conquer India - as being wrong.

The early conquest - or Islamic jihad - were considered God's battles and so - just battles. Even though they attacked and slaughtered sometimes up to 100,000 Hindus in a single day - it was all done with God's blessing.
