Spencer: Islam on Capitol Hill: A Missed Opportunity

I was at the much-ballyhooed event last Friday, and here is my report in Human Events today:

The organizers of the "Islam on Capitol Hill" event last Friday came only about 47,000 people short of their goal of bringing 50,000 Muslims to Washington to pray in front of the Capitol building. Although the event received a great deal of publicity, it didn't receive the backing of the leading American Muslim advocacy groups -- the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim Public Affairs Council - and apparently that was enough to keep it from drawing Muslims to Capitol Hill in the numbers the organizers would have liked.

Nonetheless, the event went on, peacefully, under skies that initially threatened rain but then turned brilliantly sunny. Still, it was a huge missed opportunity for American Muslims, and not just because the turnout was far smaller than expected.

Organizer Hassen Abdellah had explained before the event that it was designed "to show we are not terrorists, but that most of us Muslims here love America and abide by its laws." And it took place against a backdrop of a sharp increase in violent jihad activity in the United States. In the week leading up to the Islam on Capitol Hill prayer meeting, two Muslims, including an imam, were arrested for their alleged roles in an elaborate plot involving numerous other Muslims in New York City and Denver, who were evidently planning a major jihad attack at a sports stadium.

Another Muslim, Hosam Maher Husein Smadi, was arrested after placing an inert car bomb at a 60-story office tower in downtown Dallas. Yet another Muslim, an American convert who calls himself Talib Islam, was arrested for plotting to blow up the Paul Findley Federal Building in Springfield, Illinois.

All that in one week. If the Islam on Capitol Hill event was really supposed to show that Muslims were not terrorists, wouldn't it have been a good opportunity to denounce those jihad plots and the Islamic doctrines of warfare and supremacism that inspired them in the first place? For these were not just plots to sow undifferentiated mayhem, but were specifically Islamic jihad plots developed by Muslims who believed that the violence they unleashed would advance the cause of Islam. Dallas plotter Smadi explained his intentions in fervently expressed Islamic theological terms: "I truly say it that my dream is to be among God's soldiers, first for the support of Islam and my beloved Sheik Usama [bin Laden], may God give him long life....I am ready for the Jihadi life....Victory is coming, is coming to defeat the Romans [i.e., Christians] and for the destruction of the Jews. God is Most Great. We shall attack them in their very homes. Brother, by God, we shall attack them in a manner that hurts, an attack that shakes the world." Likewise Talib Islam spoke to a man whom he did not know was an FBI informant about his desire to wage Islamic jihad and bring down the U.S. government.

But Hassen Abdellah, asked on the morning of the prayer meeting to denounce these plots, demurred, saying that the event was not meant for denunciations. Yet Brooklyn imam Abdul Malik, who preached the sermon at the gathering, found ample time to denounce the immorality of American popular culture and indulge in several oblique denunciations of Christianity. He emphatically recommended Islam as the cure for America's ills - and this was a political prescription, not solely a religious one. I spoke to several Muslims at the event; all said they'd like to see Islamic law, Sharia, come to the United States - a sentiment rife with political implications that remain a matter of indifference on the part of officials sworn to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution.

Islam on Capitol Hill was supposed to show that Muslims are not terrorists. Yet not a word was said at the event about the Muslims arrested for terrorist activity that same week, or any assurances given that the assembled Muslims were working to root out this problem from the Islamic community. What's more, the Islamic terrorists' stated goal is the imposition of Sharia, with its denial of free speech and legal equality, and that seemed to be just fine with most of those who prayed Jummah prayer on Capitol Hill on Friday.

It was hardly a comforting message to give to free Americans.

Dear Robert,

Thank you for attending this event, and reporting on it.
Well done.
As you said - their message is no comfort to those who value freedom.
God bless you and your family.

ML

Organizer Hassen Abdellah had explained before the event that it was designed "to show we are not terrorists, but that most of us Muslims here love America and abide by its laws."

If you favor introducing Sharia law to the United States, you are hardly defending the notion that you abide by our laws.

The silence was deafening.

Seriously, in light of the recent arrests, some mention of it was called for. The fact they didn't--speaks volumes. So maybe it wasn't silence after all.

There were only 3,000 muhammadans so they kept quiet.

Believe you me, if there had been 50,000 or more muhammadans at that event, they would have been much more in our face. 100,000 muhammadans and they would have been gloating over our imminent demise.

"to show we are not terrorists, but that most of us Muslims here love America and abide by its laws."

I doubt that very much. How can they say that and then some outwardly approve of sharia law? Hmm?

They may not be terrorists but they are all Islamists, that is clear.

It makes no difference that some Muslims are non violent.Truth is there might well be some but the fact is it is impossible to know which are good and which are bad.So assume all want you dead and you will be safer. The way they lie who would trust them at their word. Also, trying to draw a croud of 50,000 and only getting 3,000 says it all.If CAIR really wanted to get the word out about how peaceful they are they would have.Truth is radical islamic terrorist need to die rapidly. If I can help there I would.

Our country is going to hell in a hand-basket when it allows seditious people to stand in front of a building that represents the US and pray for the repacement of the document which allowed them to assemble in the first place.

First of all, Muslims assembling for an event in the capital of the country which has done more to preserve and protect freedom than any other poltical entity in history has a certain obscenity about it since Islam is so freedom crushing and in so many ways. Second, again we see how useless so-called moderate Muslims are in the fight against Islamic supremacist designs.

America is too good for Islam and Islam is awful for liberty. What's hard to get about this? Ain't rocket science here or anything close to it.

If they want sharia, why in the hell did they come here? Why didn't they remain in their God-forsaken, islamic wastelands and live pious muslim lives in the company of "the best of people"? Muslim arrogance enrages me. How dare they gather in MY nation's capitol and condemn MY country, its people, culture, dominant religion, and government? People who want to import and implement a barbaric, antiquated legal system and culture in any modern, Western nation are potential terrorists because they threaten our Constitution, legal system, and the rule of OUR LAW. If they cannot fully accept our way of life, they should LEAVE.

Muslims come here to exploit the fruits of our hard labor. They are a fifth column of treacherous, hostile, alien invaders.

Did the group get it's timing tips from Al Gore??? Of course they missed a golden opportunity, for they had no intention of grasping said opportunity.

Golda said this concerning the Palestinians (so-called), but what she said applies equally to Muslims generally: they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

Americans are willing to give the benefit of the doubt in most instances, until it becomes quite clear that they are being played as fools. With good reason Americans are quite leery of Muslims. All they have to do is watch what Muslims do.

This event was never supposed to be political in nature and this is a desperate attempt to spin it into one. It's a shame that you cannot see Muslims as being about anything other than terrorism. It seems that for you Muslims are all about terrorism and if they don't denounce it every time they do something publicly then they must be secretly supporting it.

It might be useful to read an English translation of exactly what Muslims say in their prayers.

The site of thousands of Muslims on their knees in front of the United States Capitol was jarring enough, knowing what they were saying would be another eye opener.

Oh, and just curious, I assume it was a coincidence that Mecca and the Capitol happened to be the same direction.

They knew they were on the spot and so did not openly pray for our death or subjugation. As they say, 'allah knows what is in their hearts' (I paraphrase). Sorry, I don't trust them considering their ideology calls for our downfall.

Yeah, right - they can't denounce jihad/terrorism. They won't because it is what they are wishing for as I stated in my first paragraph.

I find their displays disgusting and just a show of arrogance. As if we are supposed to see something 'holy' in their head banging. I am reminded of the movie '300' where the Persian king stands there like a pompous idiot demanding that people bow to him. That idiot protrayed mohammed/allah to a tee.

More taquia from the Mohammedans. What they want is to get the US military and economic might so that they can continue to subdue non Muslims and make them slaves. This is what Mohammedans did with ancient cultures they stole their wealth and women so that they can continue the Islamic blood shed and war machine on to the world. Persians, Buddhists and Hindus were wiped out so were Christians and Jews in Saudi Arabia and through out the middle east. Many African cultures have also been wiped out by the savage Mohammedans.

He then directs to the apologia on his blog. From his blog, quoting Robert Spencer:

"I spoke to several Muslims at the event; all said they'd like to see Islamic law, Sharia, come to the United States - a sentiment rife with political implications that remain a matter of indifference on the part of officials sworn to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution."

Once more just the word of Robert Spencer to go on and I'm sure it is easy to find people in a crowd of 3,000 who would like to see at least elements of Sharia adopted in the US.
.................

Really? Would it be "easy" to find people in a crowd of 3,000 who wanted to see Sharia adopted in the US of say--Tea Party protesters, or Forty-Niner football fans, or music lovers going to a Rolling Stones concert, or even protesters at the G20?

Probably not. And yet, "Little Bulldogs" does not seem discomfitted in the least that a number of Muslims at this peaceful "pray-in" nonetheless support the oppressive and bloody horror of Shari'ah, and want to see it replace--by some means or other--the constitution of the United States of America.
