Attempt to strengthen laws on violence against women runs up against Sharia

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women (CEDAW) is essentially a dead letter in Islamic countries, because of Sharia -- and the Koran's command to beat disobedient women (4:34).

"Human Rights vs. Sharia: Violence Against Women," by Valentina Colombo for Hudson NY, October 5:

The great irony of the recent International Conference on Violence Against Women hosted by the Italian Ministry for Equal Opportunities, is that if the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women (CEDAW), ratified by 185 countries, or over 90% of the United Nations, were implemented, there would be no need for this conference.

One if the main problems is the distance between laws, international conventions and treaties - and their implementation.

In Islamic countries, for example, although 46 out of 57 members of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) ratified it, they did so with "reservations." It seems there are Muslim intellectuals and human rights defenders who are still ambivalent about pursuing engagement with Islam and Islamic law, and gender equality and women's empowerment in Muslim societies.

Even though the 1990 Declaration on Human Rights in Islam, the 1994 Charter on Human Rights, and the 2005 OIC Covenant on the Rights of the Child in Islam indicate that the relationship between Islam and Human Rights is crucial - - due to the place of Islam and Islamic law in the social, cultural, political, and legal affairs of states' parties - CEDAW has more "reservations" placed on it than any other Human Rights treaty. States' parties identified as Islamic have placed "reservations" even broader in scope and ground, maintaining that they will not implement any article against the principles of sharia. The Convention ends up, therefore, as though they had never signed it.

In October 2000, even the Saudi Government signed the Convention, but now is Saudia Arabia, as someone said, women are not persons: they cannot drive - they cannot do anything - without their "guardian's" permission. Is this a contradiction? Not at all: Saudi Arabia signed CEDAW with the following "reservations":

· "1. In case of contradiction between any term of the Convention and the norms of Islamic law, the Kingdom is not under obligation to observe the contradictory terms of the Convention.

· "2. The Kingdom does not consider itself bound by paragraph 2 of article 9 of the Convention and paragraph 1 of article 29 of the Convention."...

What's the rub...I'm sure obama did the same thing when he co-sponsored (signed?) the anti-free speech legislation in the UN so that nothing in there would override our constitution and, specifically, our bill of rights.

it is true christian women get beaten, many times to death, by their men because they refuse to WORSHIP their husbands (ephesians 5:88). i dont know why Paul would throw up this verse and stick it to his fairy tale book. any attempt for orginizations to stop violence against the poor women obviously contradicts the christian sharia.

Strange how christians, like spencer himself, fail to read the verse in full context as well as reading the FULL quran.
people dont understand how sluts, whores, short/tight clothing and any other christian activity which will have a negative impact on children (which God in the quran has given a wife to do), does NOT exist in islam. By obedience it means religious, not what the husband says and the wife is ordered to follow (again like paul's book).
islam gives women the same rights and freedom as men. tooo bad christians refuse to realise so, ESPECIALLY self assured scholors who claim they've been studying a faith for 30 years.

and i dont think wahabbism has ANY PLACE in islam.
again, too bad christians fail to realise so.

'Islam' and 'Violence' go together so easily, like mixing a compatible fluids into poison. Why bother with protecting people's 'human rights' when you have Sharia draconian violence against women, and non-believers. Why this is so natural for them, this violence, that to expect them to change is like asking a leopard to change his spots. Islam, this 'religion of peace' is violence personified in their violent deity, Mohammad's family god, the moon-god Al-Yllah, renamed Allah. What's to wonder? Submit...

Now, how is such a thing possible, since--as any apologist for Islam will insist--Muslim countries were all much more egalitarian than any Western country--until well into the 20th century.

No doubt 'WomenForTruth101' would agree, since she seems to believe that Christian women are beaten to death on a regular basis for neglecting to "worship their husbands".

I wouldn't be at all surprised if other apologists show up with comments--probably trying to enlighten benighted Infidels as to the freedom and equality inherent in the hijab--or the burkha.

Odd, with this history, that it is in Muslim countries that so many women are not allowed to testify in court, or enjoy full inheritance rights with their brothers, or choose their own partners, or obtain a full education, or drive, or even venture out of their homes without a father, or husband, or adult son.

That so many members of the OIC signed the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women just shows the usual taqiyya--that *of course* they will hold to CEDAW's rules--*unless it contradicts Islamic law*--which it always will, and to which Shari'ah will always prevail.

Hey, Ephesians 5 only has thirty-three verses in it, and not 88. You might want to look at something other than your Islamist website for talking points. It might enhance your credibility. You can look it up yourself in the NIV, RSV, KJV, as well as in many other translations.

Here is the NIV:

New International Version

Ephesians 5 - Study This Chapter

1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person--such a man is an idolater--has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- 30 for we are members of his body. 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." 32 This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Wow. Read the Q'uran much? Or ever? Or do you just pick up what you can through your cloth-covered ears at Friday night service in the other room, apart from the men, listening to the imam over a loudspeakers and just go by what you think you hear?

There are, of course, whores in Islam, they're called temporary wives...perhaps you've heard of them? And there is no short or tight clothing because a man would butcher a woman who chose to dress any way she liked.

And, gosh, I wish you would tell those Wahabbists who have financed every mosque in America (even yours) to stop being so Wahabbist, and that there's no place for Wahabbism in Islam. Please direct us to the Islamist site where you've posted that complaint so we can see the enlightenment begin.
