Candidate Obama ripped Pakistan for "making peace treaties with the Taliban"

So what has happened in the nine months that Obama has been President to lead him to [1] reverse this stand completely? And since we went into Afghanistan in the first place in order to fight the Taliban, and Obama now accepts a role for the Taliban in Afghanistan's government, why are we increasing our military presence in Afghanistan? What is the objective? Is there one at all? Certainly it isn't to establish democracy in Afghanistan, when one Sharia entity (the Karzai government) is battling another Sharia entity (the Taliban). So what is it, exactly?
