So what has happened in the nine months that Obama has been President to lead him to reverse this stand completely? And since we went into Afghanistan in the first place in order to fight the Taliban, and Obama now accepts a role for the Taliban in Afghanistan's government, why are we increasing our military presence in Afghanistan? What is the objective? Is there one at all? Certainly it isn't to establish democracy in Afghanistan, when one Sharia entity (the Karzai government) is battling another Sharia entity (the Taliban). So what is it, exactly?

Obama cannot articulate a strategy because he has no strategy. It is essential for the citizens and the US military to have confidence in the civilian leadership that is mandated by the Constitution. If that confidence is not there, we wind up with situations like that of Vietnam, where civil unrest explodes, along with young men and women leaving the country to avoid military service. Respect for our institutions deteriorates and it takes years to restore it. We still suffer to some extent from the Vietnam experience.
As a former Marine, I could not in good conscience advise my 19 year old son to serve in the military under the current civilian leadership and it is painful for me to admit that.

Here is a little fact. In 1981 while in collage, Barry traveled to Indonesia to obtain/renew his passport so that he could travel to Pakistan.

I believe that the AfPak strategy was faulty to begin with. It was aimed at removing the effect, without removing the cause. In fact, the cause (Pakistan) was being helped all along!
No wonder it failed.
In its fight with Islamism and anti Americanism, it is absolutely necessary for American to enlist the services of India on its side. The fight with Islamism can not succeed unless the two and a quarter billion non muslim population of China and India is on the other side.
Now, just imagine had India been involved with all that help given to Pakistan over eight years. I think the results would have been very different. At least, the ridiculous double game of Pakistan would not have been a reality.
Better late than never. America has more in common with India than what people of both countries think.
