"I swear that my blood is as fire in the desire for Jihad"

Much is made here of the fact that Hosam Smadi seems to have been torn between contemporary Western values and Islamic ones. This is, however, something we have seen in jihadis before. In fact, the jihad plotting itself may be an attempt to outweigh the negative effect of the sins the jihadi has incurred. Dallas jihad plot update. "Internet postings show two sides to accused terrorist," by Byron Harris for WFAA-TV, October 1:

One day he was a teenager looking for a wild time, the next a dedicated al-Qaeda wanna-be who appeared to be on the edge of insanity.

Dozens of Internet postings obtained by News 8 have uncovered a confusing picture of the man accused of trying to destroy a downtown Dallas office building last week.

When Hosam Smadi arrived in California from Jordan, he dyed his hair red and found a car to drive. He made videos from behind the wheel, most notably one on how to break through a traffic jam by following a fire truck.

But in January, still only 18, he wrote an ominous offer to help Osama bin Laden on a Middle Eastern website called the "Military Wing of the Popular Resistance Committees of Palestine."

"I want to be with the resistance that is with Shekih Osama, may God extend his life and grant him victory," Smadi wrote in informal Arabic. "I swear that my blood is as fire in the desire for Jihad. But, if I can only find the beloved Sheikh Osama may he live long.... the faith in my heart for jihad in his sake until death and our purpose is paradise God willing."...

From what depth of dark, arrogant, willful ignorance comes the presumption that jihadi sentiment is anything close to insanity?

The question answers itself.

"One day he was a teenager looking for a wild time, the next a dedicated al-Qaeda wanna-be who appeared to be on the edge of insanity."

did he attend a mosque?

his hardened heart grown cold, no conscience ... his blood on fire due to the unquenchable fire of true hellfire.

Cold-blooded killers with fire-hot blood? Hmmm.

I've said it before and will say it again - Texas is the WRONG STATE to mess with.
In certain parts of America, terrorists should be thankful they've been "saved" by law enforcement officials from "John Doe and Company."

LOL, I bet the last time Hosam Smadi even came near a vagina was when he was born, the kid is 18, shouldn't he have other things on his mind to get his blood all ablaze about? Perhaps he is a homosexual, with a lot of pent up islamorage.

"I swear that my blood is as fire in the desire for Jihad"...good for you. Maybe it won't hurt so bad when you're burning in hell.

Very astute observation. It seems one act of violent Jihad can "atone" for a lot of un-Islamic partying.

Another thing you see frequently--disturbingly, both by Jihadists and by ordinary Western journalists--is the conflation of licentious behavior with "Western values".

Of course, lots of 18-year-olds want to dye their hair wild colors and drive fast cars--I have no problem with this--in fact, it is pretty mild. But to imply that such superficial freedoms constitute the heart of "Western values" is grotesque.

It's not as though this Jihadist-wannabee was reading John Locke and Thomas Paine one minute, and plotting to blow up the Fountain Place tower the next.

He likely felt uneasy about his "sins", and decided--like so many Muslims--that they were not his fault, but the fault of the decadent Kufr West, and that they would have to pay.

This is extremely common among Jihadists. You often hear of Jihadists using drugs and visiting strip clubs before they commit their acts of terrorism, and this--absurdly--is often chalked up to their "blending in" before their acts--as though one had to visit strip clubs in order to "blend in".

Just as many Christians and other religious people believe that a truly selfless, heroic act--such as saving a baby from a burning building--goes a long way in redeeming the soul of even a rather sketchy character, many devout Muslims believe that an act of Jihad terror, if sufficiently horrific, serves to counter a "multitude of sins".

This Jordanian, upon coming to California, reportedly dyed his hair red. This practice, widespread among Muslims of all nationalities, has a religious basis; it is an act by which members of the Faithful (including many African-American converts) emulate Muhammed, who, according to historians and hadiths, dyed his hair red using henna. So this practice is Sunna, and a form of quasi-worship of the Muslim prophet. The question arises, then, as to whether Smadi's decision to color his hair red was motivated by religious, or cultural-religious factors.

Good point--I only thought of this myself after I had already posted above. It is easy to assume that he dyed his hair, say, magenta--a mild bit of Western teen rebellion.

But it is indeed quite likely that he dyed his hair henna-red instead, which is a sign of violent Jihad. So this might not have been an indication of his adopting "Western values"--even superficial ones--at all.
