STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A 37-year-old wife from New Brighton tried to slit her husband's throat as he slept because he was not the devout Muslim she believed she married, and pressured her to eat pork and drink alcohol, authorities allege.In a rambling, four-page handwritten confession, Rabia Sarwar laid out the "mental and emotional cruelty" that led to her trying to kill her husband, Susan Wagner High School teacher Sheikh Naseem, early yesterday morning, a law enforcement source said.
"I tried my best to cut his throat," Ms. Sarwar admitted, according to court papers. Except Naseem woke up during the attempt, and took the knife from her, authorities said.
According to Ms. Sarwar's attorney, Joseph Licitra, Naseem "was a cruel person, he preyed on her."
The day before the incident, "he literally threatened to have her parents mutilated," Licitra said.
The way the law enforcement source describes it, Ms. Sarwar, who is Pakistani, told investigators that Naseem, who is half-Pakistani, had presented himself as a devout Muslim before the two had wed five months ago.
But after the marriage, she discovered more about him, she told investigators -- before meeting her, he had only dated non-Muslims, and he considered Salman Rushdie to be one of his favorite authors....
Ms. Sarwar also told investigators that Naseem pressured her into doing things that were against her religious beliefs.
"He made her do stuff that she didn't like to do -- eating pork, drinking alcohol, wearing short clothes. She did all of that to make him happy," the source said.
At about 3 a.m. yesterday, inside the couple's 80 St. Mark's Place apartment, Ms. Sarwar "snapped," the source said, cutting his neck, right cheek and right hand.
In an interview with the Post, Naseem said his wife was having a hard time adjusting to American culture....

I think that the JudeoChristian prosecutor handling this case in NYC should resist the urge to let this wayward Moslima off in favor of celebrating religious diversity, and instead prosecute her to the fullest extent of the Attempted Murder statute there in light of the fact that Allah and the Holy Prophet Mohammed only prescribed violence against women, not the reverse.

I agree with lkeevy1. This is rather fishy. This woman is 37 years old, not some teenager. She's been married 5 months. The husband must have married her to please his parents. Maybe there was money or an inheritance at stake for him that required that he marry a Pakistani muslim. He apparently didn't care about being observant. I'm thinking that the woman wanted to inherit something from the husband and used the "he violated my religious beliefs" excuse to kill him to get money and to look justified before their families. She's no victim here.

Skevin, no - I meant the "Albanian Cultural Center" up on Victory (which played a role in that bust I mentioned).
But you're right; there is a mosque closer to the action. And I, too, see more "radical" and "Middle Eastern" characters in front of it, though there are far more hijabs to be seen at the "Albanian Cultural Center" (now a misnomer, in my opinion)than there every were in decades gone by.

Something else to think about, here.
In Pakistan, the 'blasphemy' laws can be - and haven been- used by Muslims against other Muslims whom they do not like, in order to settle scores. The charge of apostasy can be used similarly.
In 'Cruel and Usual Punishment', chapter five, section entitled 'allah's enforcers: vigilante justice', Nonie Darwish points out that under sharia the one who kills 'an apostate, a robber, or an adulterer cannot be punished, and is forgiven for murder under sharia law'. She then observes, on p. 148, 'People can kill each other for any reason, and then lie or exaggerate claims to make it fit the allowable reasons to kill. Thus a man who kills his wife can say she was cheating on him {when in fact she may not have been - dda}; a Muslim who kills another [Muslim] can say he [the victim] was an apostate or a robber {and again, this may be a completely false charge - dda}".
In this case, the woman seems to have married the man and then found out he was an apostate (did his relatives know, when they arranged the marriage? - or wasn't he brave enough to tell them? - probably the latter).
Possibly, at first, she might have thought she could get him to return to Islam. Then as she realized she couldn't, well...the sharia penalty for apostasy, is death, and *any* Muslim is permitted, indeed required, to carry out that punishment.
When Abdul Rahman apostasised to Christianity in Afghanistan, it was his own wife and children who repudiated him and turned him in to the authorities.
There is, however, another possibility, illuminated by the remarks by Nonie Darwish that I have quoted above. It is possible that this man's wife simply hated him; and attempted to do what she could and would have done in Pakistan, to get rid of him and get off scot free - that is, kill him but say that she did it to punish him for apostasy. Which in any sharia-influenced Islamic country might well get her off. *Unless* there is reliable non-Muslim third-party evidence of the various things she says he did, such as reading and expressing admiration for the Satanic Verses [if I were the police, I'd check the house to look for the book], eating pork, drinking alcohol, etc; unless non-Muslim witnesses can say that they saw her *wearing* short clothes and drinking alcohol; then we only have her word for it, that this was why she tried to kill him. If it *is* only her word, then it may all be tarradiddles.
That is: that 'letter' in which she accuses him of apostasy, may be simply her attempt to cover her a**.
It would probably work in Pakistan, to get her off.
