Detroit -- The brotherhood of the Masjid Al-Haqq mosque gathered for Friday prayers on the city's west side, the first time they had convened since their spiritual leader was shot dead in a gunbattle with the FBI.The leader, Luqman Ameen Abdullah, 53, was killed Wednesday at a Dearborn warehouse as he was being arrested in connection with a host of charges, including conspiracy, receipt of stolen goods and firearm offenses.
The federal authorities claim Abdullah was the head of a radical jihadist organization intent on carving out an Islamic state within the United States through violent means.
Eleven men face charges. The complaint said many of the men were ex-convicts who were introduced to Islam in prison.
"That's true that 90 percent of the brothers here have been locked up or had contact with the criminal justice system," said Jamil Ibn Rafael smoking a cigarette out front before 2 p.m. prayers began. "But there's so much confusion in the ghetto. They snatch a man up, put him away and dump him back in the ghetto. He feels hopeless. He needs something to organize his life. We want our own life. Rafael did two separate stints in prison. It was at Jackson State Penitentiary where Rafael said he was first introduced to Islam and eventually the mosque.
Abdullah, too, was an ex-convict known as Christopher Thomas until he found Islam in prison and became an acolyte of Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, better known as H. Rap Brown, a former leader of the Black Panthers who is serving live a life sentence for the killing of two police officers....
"Are there some people in this mosque involved in criminal activity?" Rafael asked. "Yeah, probably. There are criminals in every organization. That don't make you public enemy No. 1. I'll tell you what, there's a lot of paranoia around here. I still think there's one or two snitches in here."
The Masjid Al-Haqq mosque has 120 members, exposed walls and electrical boxes with no switches.
Omar Regan, one of Abdullah's 12 children, returned from South Central Los Angeles, where he leads a mosque, on Friday to wash his father's body and anoint his feet with oil in preparation for burial today.

Its interesting how the Detroit Press fails to mention that Abdullah fired at the FBI agents when they went there to arrest him and his cohorts for dealing in illegal firearms and other violations. Once again its blame whitey for blacks being locked up in prison. H. Rap Brown, the cop killer is their hero. Brown gets the same adulation that Mumia Abu Jamal continues to receive for killing a police officer. I don't recall reading any reports of FBI raids into other religious churches, but Mosques are often mentioned in such raids. For starters, those being interviewed often sound like fools and borderline illiterates. If anything, it could easily be seen as unsympathetic in that light.
Moreover, when a congregation leader is killed in an FBI shootout, it would be perfectly proper journalism to develop a report on the thoughts and reactions of the congregants at their first community prayer service since the incident. That's clearly the journalistic framework for this report, not some Islamo-loving plot to make Muslims look good. Which, strangely, always seems to go on in the world of JW.
And, yes, there's no reason why such an article would not be developed if the religious figure involved was from another faith.

Luqman Ameen Abdullah stood for, why he was considered a threat to the community and why he decided to participate in a shootout with the FBI whereby they eventually handed his ass to him on a plate.

You're just upset that a light has been shined on this shitty little episode and that we know what to watch for when it comes to taqiyah and Muslims making up things (known as lying) to project an image of Islam that is diametrically opposed to what it actually is. LeDuff doesn't appear to understand the threat implicit in these words. Just as those considered insufficiently Islamic, or "apostate" in the Muslim world are often murdered by their more devout co-religionists, Jamil Ibn Rafael here is threatening to go after any possible "snitches" in his own congregation.
This might mean congregants who had actually worked with law enforcement in the case, or it might just mean congregants who were at all uncomfortable with the more violent and insane aspects of Abdullah's preaching.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the more comparatively moderate members of the Masjid Al-Haqq mosque turn up dead. That a journalist wouldn't understand that seems unbelievable to me.

My, why are you throwing these people under the bus? Is your racism coming out my friend? Would you say such things about someone from Pakistan or Lebanon? Jamil Ibn Rafael is really not much different from you in his beliefs, even if he lacks some polish. The Detroit Free Press article did quote congregants at the mosque. Also, it is quite true, as shown by other articles, that Islam has frequently recruited new adherents from prisons not only in the United States, but in Europe as well.

It is actually a perfect mindset for Islam. You project your faults and failing on "The Other", while remaining pure in one's own eyes. Whether it is burglary, armed robbery, rape, or even murder, it can all be displaced. It is a short walk from blaming society for one's actions to crediting it to allah's will. The apparent framework of the newspaper report was to collect thoughts and responses from the congregants. Not to provide, a comprehensive detailed description of the incident. There is nothing unprofessional with doing that. You should actually try to listen to what those of us schooled in journalism have to say, and actually try to give it some thoughtful consideration, before responding - hopefully in a thoughtful manner, even if that's hoping for too much.
Beyond that, it's hard to see how to have a discussion with somebody like you about anything substantive when you appear to be unable to cope with the most elemental facts of reality and feel a continuing need to create fabrications. No, I'm not upset that this episode was 'uncovered'. I'm rather happpy. Do you have solid proof to the contrary?
And no, I'm not a Muslim. But you apparently think you know my religious views better than I do.
If you can't refute me, try being quiet and considering what's being said instead of feeling the need to ignorantly fulminate as a way of venting rage.

The MSM is wallowing in a stagnant cesspit of biased one- sided and spineless reporting. Many of them are not without blood on their hands.
Whatever "schools" are producing these should be closed down and put to better use.
This incident is of particular interest to me as I was raised not too far from Detroit. But I think back to something that I learned about far off India. It is that members of the lowest cast there are easy converts for Islam.
