But it is "Islamophobic" to notice, doncha know.
"An(other) Inconvenient Truth--about Terrorism," by Timothy Rhea Furnish for the History News Network, October 19 (thanks to the astounding Kathy Shaidle):
So, just over half the world's terrorist organizations are Muslim in origin and function. No other religious ideology is close--not even, most notably, Christianity (with its 2 billion+ membership, you'd think more would be involved in violence, wouldn't you?). Since Muslims make up 20% of the world's population, their involvement in over 50% of the world's terrrorist [sic] groups is telling and troubling--and something the NIS is loathe to admit, thus tainting its claim to "know...the nature of the threats."
Hmmmm.. just 50%?
I was thinking that figure might be a little low.......
Yep 50%...that's the tiny minority, minute, small, itsy bitsy number of extreme radicals who misunderstand Islam...
Furnish's site...
http://www.mahdiwatch.org/
50% is definitely a low figure.
Even if we accept the notion that in a Muslim-dominated country, one merely subtracts from the estimated total population those who are definitely self-identified as non-Muslims (Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and other non-Muslims) in order to arrive at the number of Muslims -- when there may be, among those counted as Muslims, some who do not think of themselves as Believers, the claim that Muslims are 20% of the world's population is false. They are about 15% of the world's population. That still leaves 85% of the world's population that is not Muslim, and that could, if it came to its senses, no longer be on the defensive, hoping to placate Muslims everywhere and always, or to "help the good Muslims" defeat the "[bad, unrepresentative, tiny minority of] extremists," but could simply withhold all aid, reduce contacts with the Muslim countries and Muslim Believers to the minimum, so that Muslims would eventually have to confront the most important truth, and so that non-Muslims who might not have given the matter thought would now do so.
And what is that truth? That truth is that the political, economic, social, intellectual, and moral failures of Muslim states, Muslim societies, even Muslim individuals raised in a micro-environment -- say, a Muslim family -- suffused with Islam, are due entirely to Islam itself.
This has been discussed by me many times at this website. And since I do not yet detect in this matter -- as I have in others -- the echoes I wait for, I will keep discussing this. Eventually it all will be clear to everyone and his brother. So clear that it will appear to have been -- as other matters now being seen differently, including the folly of Iraq and Afghanistan, in all kinds of quarters -- quite obvious all along. And that's exactly how one would have it.
Errata Sheet:
For "Since Muslims make up 20% of the world's population, their involvement in over 50% of the world's terrorist groups is telling and troubling"
Read "Since Muslims make up 15% of the world's population, their involvement in over 95% of the world's terrorist groups is telling and troubling"
Hugh is right, the 20% is inflated.
And the others are right: the 50% is, if not deflated, misleading.
With terrorism as with any other sociopolitical disturbance, it's not merely a matter of quantity, but also of quality.
Analogy: Imagine 10 different groups in a city neighborhood. Imagine that all 10 groups have been determined by a polling service to "engage in crime". And let us further note that the polling service stops there and does not tell us what kinds of crimes are being committed, and by which groups.
So we dig deeper, and we find that while all 10 groups commit "crimes", only one of the groups is going around gang-raping and murdering children, while the other 9 groups are engaging exclusively in sidewalk gambling at best, shoplifting and petty theft at worst.
Now, analogiae claudicant -- "analogies limp": Mine is not perfect. It was meant only to illustrate one facet of the problem: namely, that when you leave quality out of a comparison, you can mislead. Where my analogy "limps" is in its implication that the non-Muslim terrorist organizations are in their essence trivial. However, where my analogy succeeds is in illustrating that the non-Muslim terrorist organizations in a practical, de facto sense are nowhere near the threat that Muslim terrorist groups present -- on any level one wishes to measure this: in fanatical zeal, in ability to globally network, in global incidence, and in the grotesqueness of ultra-violence. Even in its heyday, for example, the IRA or the Basques didn't gruesomely saw off heads for a camera, praise their god when the head was severed and placed back on the stump between the shoulders of the decapitated body, and then distribute copies of the video for fellow Irish or fellow Basques to obtain (as the French philosopher-journalist Bernard-Henri Lévy told Charlie Rose, videos of the beheading of Daniel Pearl were available at the front doors of mosques in Karachi, Pakistan and elsewhere).
Muslim terrorists have since 911 single-handedly caused every airport in the world, every major utility company, every major transportation network and hub, every major shopping mall, and every government building around the world to spend millions -- perhaps up to billions by now -- more on security. Every other day on Jihad Watch for the last 7 years we hear about intelligence personnel somewhere in the world -- whether in Europe or the UK, Australia or North America, or elsewhere throughout the Third World -- apprehending Muslims for suspected terror plots. In all these post-911 years, I haven't heard about any other non-Muslim terrorist groups doing anything, much less anything equivalent to what Muslims have been plotting, or succeeding in inflicting. Nary a peep from the IRA, from Basques, from the Tamil Tigers, from Eco-Terrorists, from White Power groups, etc. And even if we did hear a peep from any of these groups, it would be a very locally circumscribed peep: we might hear of some unrest in Sri Lanka concerning some stragglingly surviving members of the Tamil Tiger resistance. But we never hear of Tamil Tigers blowing up trains thousands of miles away in London, nor did we ever hear of the IRA blowing up trains thousands of miles away in Madrid, nor did we ever hear of Basques taking it upon themselves to plan and implement a commando mission to mass-murder 3,000 people in New York City.
The only major terrorist event of our time that apologists can point to as non-Muslim is Oklahoma City -- but people should read Jayna Davis before being so sure Muslims were not involved in that tragedy.
I did some figures a few months back: 79% of all terrorist organisations are Islamic and 94% of religiously-based ones are Islamic.
See here for complete breakdown:

I did my own calculation of terrorist organisations a few months back: 79% are Islamic and of the religiously-based ones 94% are Islamic.

....sorry for duplicate post....
Lets not delude ourselves the word terrorism and its use in the media is defined by the USA and it's allies. Today the Afghan Mujahideen who fight to liberate themselves from the corrupt tyrannical occupiers and puppet government are termed "terrorist" but when they were doing the same thing 20 years ago they were termed "freedom fighters" The actual definition of the word terrorism and whether an act or group falls within that framework has little relevance when politicians and media decide whether to term something as terrorism or freedom fighting. Its now just a generic term to describe and discredit the "other guy"
terrorism |ˈterəˌrizəm|
noun
the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.
By this definition, and reality, the worst and most prolonged act of terrorism to take place in history is the US invasion and occupation of Iraq.
Math, evidence, logic,....as Robert would ask, "will the Islamophobia never end?"
““Islam is peaceful” mantra, is this list of terrorist organizations as designated by Australia, Canada, the European Union, UK, US, India and Russia. Of 126 terror-waging groups listed, here is the breakdown by ideology:
Islamic: 64
Secular nationalist: 36
Marxist/Maoist: 13
“Other”/Anarchist: 9
Christian: 2
Shinto and Jewish: 1 each”
And then all you guys respectfully disagree on the %, but in the end, I’ve always said, actions speak louder than words, and as long as the islamist keep shouting, these words and these facts, will be drowned out.
And Hugh, you’re right, as long as the truth is broadcast, if the only echo is that of your own voice, then the message has not been received. When the message has been drowned out by lies, ergo. When the echoes return in a different voice, then success. Maybe within our lifetime.
... involvement in over 50% of the world's terrorist groups...
Over 50%?!. Factor in the number of activists, the number of sympathizers, and the amount of operating capital and aren't we closer to 100% than 99%?
*** 8:12 ***
That truth is that the political, economic, social, intellectual, and moral failures of Muslim states, Muslim societies, even Muslim individuals...
Even Moslem individuals? First question is are Moslems capable of individualism; second question is what type of person is more likely to fail than a Moslem?
Read the speech delivered by Prez Osama in Cairo and focus on his praise of Islamic Science for the answer to that.
50% seems a low number to me. Perhaps defining these attacks by how many people are killed or maimed might be more accurate.
Start with Mohamed's raids and murders and total the number of people murdered in the name of Mohamed's invented deity "Allah" and the spread of his totalitarian ideology across the world.
There is no comparison.
50% You mean 95%? It would be better to portray it as a graph vs. time, showing how the percentage keeps growing.

Hey, Muslims make up 0.2 % of the Nobel Prizes (Jews make
up 15 %) so it ain't a total loss !
Hey, Muslims make up 0.2 % of the Nobel Prizes (Jews make
up 18 %) so it ain't a total loss !
I guess that means Jews are SMART Monkeys and Pigs.
I also guess the large burning question then is
what ARE Muslims with ~ 100x fewer Nobel Prizes than Jews
yet with 100x greater population than the Jews ?
Yes, but Muslims do make up 90 % of the cross-dressers of the World.
A Shinto terrorist group (see above) ????????
I don't think so.......and the JDL (Jewish Defense League)
which arguably may not be a terrorist organization is defunct anyway....
No offense to my Hindu friends, but the LTTE would count
as a Tamil (Hindu) terrorist organization, though mostly
defunct as well (as least in Sri Lanka).
Not all terror is based on religion.
Terrorizing a girlfriend or wife in the US by a jealous boyfriend/husband can be based on ideology other than religion.
Just because the terror by a boyfriend or husband is non-religious based does not mean its less lethal as seen in the numerous murders in the US committed by jealous boyfriends or husbands.
Also hate crimes in the US is also based on ideology and does not depend solely on religion.
There is plenty of goings-on in the western world that probably will dwarf anything happening in a similar non-war zone setting in the muslim world. (example : American man beats up woman while spewing racial slurs : http://www.womanist-musings.com/2009/09/black-woman-gets-beaten-in-public-and.html )
The targeting of innocent minorities for alleged crimes/sins perpetrated by others is common everywhere, including the US : In 2001 after the 9/11 attacks, Arab Americans, Muslims, and Sikhs were victimized in nearly five percent of the total number of hate crimes reported that year (481 out of 9,730), a seventeen-fold increase over the prior year.
ref : http://www.civilrights.org/publications/hatecrimes/arab-americans.html
The following statistics of hate crimes in the US does not mean all Americans are involved in hate crimes, just as hate crime statistics in jihad watch does not mean all muslims are involved in anyway in hate crimes :
As documented by the FBI's 2007 HCSA report:
Approximately 51 percent of the reported hate crimes were race-based, with 18.4 percent on the basis of religion, 16.6 percent on the basis of sexual orientation, and 13.2 percent on the basis of ethnicity.
Approximately 69 percent of the reported race-based crimes were directed against blacks, 19 percent of the crimes were directed against whites, and 4.9 percent of the crimes were directed against Asians or Pacific Islanders. The number of hate crimes directed against individuals on the basis of their national origin/ethnicity increased to 1,007 in 2007 from 984 in 2006.
For the fourth year in a row, the number of reported crimes directed against Hispanics increased — from 576 in 2006 to 595 in 2007.
Though the overall number of hate crimes decreased slightly, the number of hate crimes directed at gay men and lesbians increased almost six percent — from 1,195 in 2006 to 1,265 in 2007.
Religion-based crimes decreased, from 1,462 in 2006 to 1,400 in 2007, but the number of reported anti-Jewish crimes increased slightly, from 967 in 2006 to 969 in 2007 — 12.7 percent of all hate crimes reported in 2007 — and 69 percent of the reported hate crimes based on religion.
Reported crimes against Muslims decreased from 156 to 115, 8.2 percent of the religion-based crimes. This is still more than four times the number of hate crimes reported against Muslims in 2000.
In contrast to the FBI's HCSA data, the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics in 2005 reported sharply higher numbers of hate crimes committed in the U.S.:
An annual average of 210,000 US hate crime victimizations occurred from July 2000 through December 2003. During that period an average of 191,000 hate crime incidents involving one or more victims occurred annually. Victims also indicated that 92,000 of these hate crime victimizations were reported to police. These estimates were derived from victim reports to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).
