Steyn: "Are there characteristics particular to western civilization that are worth defending? If we don't think there are, why would anybody else?"

Good question. "Three Years Alone," from Steyn Online, October 21 (thanks to the incomparable Kathy Shaidle):

Three years ago, October 2006, America Alone: The End Of The World As We Know It was officially published in the US and Canada...It's been an eventful three years, leading not just to paperback and foreign editions but three investigations for "flagrant Islamophobia" and (just this very month) an appearance before the Canadian Parliament. Sometimes in all the ructions, the main thrust of my thesis get lost, but I believe the central points hold up better than ever - and are borne out by news stories on an almost daily basis: a) This demographic transformation is happening very fast; and b) In the end, it's not about "them", it's about "us". Are there characteristics particular to western civilization that are worth defending? If we don't think there are, why would anybody else?

Since "war is deceit", we must understand that the Jihad will expose our most vulnerable point and attack it. "Multi-culturalism" is just such a point. The truth is that all cultures are not equal, some are better than others. That Islamic culture is inferior to all other current cultures is obvious to the serious student of world history. That we must pretend that it is equal to any other culture is a sin of our intellectual elite.

We have a open and free society and that is one of the reasons we are the leading economy in the world (if Obama wins another election, all bets are off). Although Muslims apologists and spokespersons find much to criticize in our society, NO Muslim may conduct a self-examination of Islam or the war-like culture it employs. If Muslims were to question their own culture on a regular basis....................

A great article from Steyn. He's always such a pleasure to read.

It's true. If we can't even stick up for ourselves, who will? At the moment we have too many self-hating Westerners (predominantly from the Left of course) and too many seething Muslims in Western countries who are weakening our already weak resolve.

Our ancestors spilt blood in World War Two so we could live in freedom today. If they could look at what we've let happen, they'd fall over and cry.

The day Muslims can begin to self-criticise and articulate a sense of mea culpa en masse, the better. However, this reality is probably a few centuries away at this rate.

"In the end, it's not about "them", it's about "us".

Then things are not looking good. Even our academic elite at our elite universities don't seem much interested.

"Despite the Danish cartoon affair being a watershed test for the freedom of the Western media to criticize religions and ideologies without fear of violent reprisal, only a small number of students turned up at both Princeton and Yale to hear Mr. Westergaard plead his case. At Princeton, there was a turnout of about sixty people, at Yale of about eighty. Both at Princeton and at Yale, half of the audience was Muslim, while the other half either agreed with them or was intimidated into appearing to do so. Perhaps the non-Muslims among America’s Ivy League students are simply unaware of the Danish cartoon affair or do not care about it."
