The problem here is a fact that we have pointed out many, many times at Jihad Watch: there is no reliable way to distinguish jihadists from peaceful Muslims. There is no Islamic authority (with the arguable exception of the Spanish ulama) that has declared that Muslims who hold to the theology and ideology of Osama bin Laden are not true Muslims and are not welcome in their mosques. Making this even more difficult is the doctrine of religious deception founded on Koran 3:28. Thus the Afghan police authorities couldn't have kept Taliban loyalists out, even if it tried -- and it is unlikely that it is trying. This is something for the learned analysts to ponder not only as it concerns our policies in Afghanistan, but numerous other policies as well, including immigration, the language used in defending ourselves from this threat, and more.
"Five British soldiers killed by rogue Afghan policeman," from The Times, November 4 (thanks to Kris):
Five British soldiers have been shot dead after a rogue Afghan policeman opened fire inside a check point, [sic]The soldiers, three from the Grenadier Guards and two from the Royal Military Police, died in the Nad-e'Ali district of Helmand Province yesterday afternoon.
It is thought a further three Afghan police officers were also killed and up to six men injured.
The soldiers had been stationed at the post for two weeks, alongside a detachment of Afghan police whom they had been mentoring.
The troops were inside a police checkpoint in Nad-e Ali when the policeman, named locally as Gulbaddin, launched his attack.
"Without warning one of the ANP (Afghan National Policemen), potentially in concert with another, picked up his weapon and started firing," a military official told The Times.
Officials said the gunmen fled the scene, possibly with his accomplice. It has been suggested the killer may have had links to the Taleban....
No kidding, really?
According to an American specialist on al BBCera this morning the Afghan "police" are poorly paid, notoriously corrupt and screening of recruits is minimal.
The training period of 8 weeks was too short anyway but even this was cut to only 5 weeks so there would be enough police to cover the elections. I hope all those western politicians who pushed for an early election are happy now.
Just like Mohammed Atta and others, pre 9/11 - they were the ideal citizens, courteous, polite, well-mannered.
Changing in a second, wreaking death and destruction upon thousands of innocent civilians as they had meticulously planned and rehearsed for years in advance. They received OBL's blessing, just as OBL received the blessing below.
The fact that OBL has received permission by an imam to use nukes on America with up to 10 million dead, should never be forgotten.

I wrote about this before. You go to such lengths so as to win a war and once you do, you let your enemies rule and be in charge again. Is this what they teach now at West Point?
Go there, stay there, make it yours, make you the rules,or are you scared of what Russia or China might think?
"The training period of 8 weeks was too short..." Right, if only this guy had been trained for a few more weeks, he would never have killed five British soldiers!
Sorry, Fred, I can't help being a smart a**.
But my point is, police training and salaries are not what's going to turn things around in Afghanistan.
Another tragic example of why attempting to win the hearts and minds of Afghans, and trying to bring democracy to these primitive, tribal savages, is a complete and utter waste of time, treasure and lives, doomed to abject failure.
Why not just pull all troops out? And the next time an attack happens from that place, just level it with JDAMs or nukes. Of course, under the Obama-Clinton leadership, the other alternative would be to announce a submission to Islam.
Hi Robert,
"There is no Islamic authority (with the arguable exception of the Spanish ulama) that has declared that Muslims who hold to the theology and ideology of Osama bin Laden are not true Muslims and are not welcome in their mosques."
Care to elaborate? Is there something I may have missed?
Rasool Obama worries about the 'will of the Afghan people'...
"Without warning one of the ANP (Afghan National Policemen), potentially in concert with another, picked up his weapon and started firing,"
'That' is the will of the Afghan people...
"Another tragic example of why attempting to win the hearts and minds of Afghans, and trying to bring democracy to these primitive, tribal savages, is a complete and utter waste of time, treasure and lives, doomed to abject failure." - ImNoDhimmi
Totally agree. There is no point in continuing.
I feel sorry for the females, but we can't go on wasting American and British lives when the Mohammedans are out-breeding us.
"... police training and salaries are not what's going to turn things around ...."
Right! You mention that the three extra weeks of training wouldn't have mattered.
Nor would higher pay. It would only have made the "rogue" a better-paid killer.
Alexander, the British, the Russians, and sorry to say it but the Americans will high tail it out of there soon. To fight for rocks and primitive beliefs from those who'd turn viciously on their benefactors for the made up god, allah, made up by a primitive evil man, mohammed. Meanwhile, we'll ponder and procrastinate till more deaths pile up. But that is change. Fu*%@d up - ain't it!
This is not the norm. Our Afghan 'allies' are so riddled with Taliban informants that it is usually to there advantage to lay low. I think the Taliban wanted some serious UK casualties right now. This was NOT a suicide attack, the operation was well planned and the enemy got away.
The soldiers had been stationed at the post for two weeks, alongside a detachment of Afghan police whom they had been mentoring.
.................................
And "mentoring is exactly what General McChrystal is suggesting we do more of. While he is broadly seen as a "tough" commander—especially compared to the squishiness of Barack Obama—in reality he is a big advocate of the old "winning hearts and minds" strategy.
He has urged American soldiers to ditch their body armor and to get out of their Humvees and mingle among "ordinary" Afgans. He has championed the idea of "mentoring" Afghan troops and policemen. He believes protecting Afghan "civilians"—from their fellow Afghans—is job one, far more important than the safety of American and Nato troops.
He is, no doubt, a decent fellow in many ways, and is certainly well-meaning. But I cannot help but think this "strategy" is going to get a lot more American troops killed.
This what McChrystal said in a recent interview:
Q. Another priority you have outlined is to accelerate the expansion of the Afghan security forces. It sounds like the main way to do that is to expand the partnerships between Afghans and Alliance forces. What improvements do you seek there?
A. Whether we grow the Afghan security forces larger or not, partnering closer is to our benefit. We can do that better than we have in the past.
What we need is a combination of mentoring and partnering. Mentoring involves people who stay with a unit all the time and teach as the unit evolves. Partnering is where you operate together. Our thought is to bring the concepts much closer together. So a unit is operating in a much tighter relationship.
.......................
This is a recipe for more incidents like the one above, which caused the death of these British soldiers.
Here's McChrystal's understanding of the Taliban, from the same interview:
But most are not deeply ideological or even politically motivated. Most are operating for pay, some are under a commander's charismatic leadership. Some are frustrated with local leaders.
.......................
He understands nothing about Islam—he doesn't even believe the Taliban are "politically" motivated. He believes there are "moderate" Taliban. Given his misunderstanding of the situation, he might well suggest—as have many others—that we simply pay off the Taliban to "switch sides". If we go down that insane road, we will just be funding the Jihad which is killing us.

"Success" in Afghanistan is failure. At the very best of chance of that "country" becoming civilised, at the cost of more good precious soldiers' lives and capital,it would "elevate" itself to another West-hating economic sink-hole vortex like Pakistan. What are we thinking? We are captives of our own lame idiotic self-righteousness,attempting to "sweet-talk" a deranged islamic ogre into playing by the (our) rules, which are being broken to our detriment and demise.
Forgive me for using a football analogy, but I believe it's time to huddle up and throw a long bomb on their dissention riddled defense when and if necessary. I'm sure the Afghan police force will find and arrest the mis-guided officer(s) and they'll be duly represented in a proper legal manner.
The war, the world-wide war, is primarily one of ideologies. The hold of Islam on the minds of its adherents is extaordinary. Usually that hold is obvious, is visible. But Islam also teaches, and Muslims are well-versed in, the craft and art of deception. "War is deception" Muhammad famouslly said. They can smile, and indeed the Qur'an and Hadith teach them to smile, when necessary, even when there is murder in their hearts. And the hold of Islam, at times intermittently seemingly relaxed, can suddenly or gradually take hold again of the minds of those who might, temporarily, appear to have become relaxed or unobservant or lapsed Muslims. It has happened so many times, to so many people mentioned at JihadWatch, that one wonders how any non-Muslim security services, or armies, or police forces, dare any longer to believe that they can trust, in any real sense, any of those who are Muslims. From the imam who supposedly was a useful police informant, but who tipped off Najibullah Zazi, to the many Muslims who took part in rally-round-the-American-flag or Interfaith-Healing rallies after the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks, and then were discovered to have said before, and also after, bloodcurdling things about America and about non-Muslims, leading not a few to suddenly flee abroad (for example, one of the prime movers of the Boston Mosque), all of this should be carefully written up, with example after example, and distributed to the military, to the police, to the security services. A good knowledge not only of the texts and tenets of Islam, but perhaps even more importantly, of the attitudes, and the atmospherics, of Islam -- that affect even the most worldlly, even those who seem so much, outwardly, like us -- see Ambassador haqqani, for example, now attacked by others in Pakistan for being too "pro-American" by cleverly having extracted another 7.5 billion in American aid, will now be thought by some in Washington (perhaps by Senator Kerry, who no doubt has entertained, or been entertained, by Husain Haqqani and his winsome Ispahani wife, such a useful helpmeet in times like this). Haqqani is a deep defender of Islam, and a clever mis-representer, in his own charming and smooth self, of Islam to the naive. Being naive is one thing. Being naive because one is almost wilfully ignorant of Islam, and the varieties of deception that Muslims are capable of, and even the varieties of self-deceptiion (how many of those "liberals" -- from Ayman Nour in Egypt, to Pinky Bhutto in Pakistan -- exhibit surprising attitudes explicable only by reference to the deep unshakeable effect of Islam?) that Muslims practice. When even a self-declared non-believer as Kanan Makiya bristles when the matter of Islam is raised, or writes about the Arab massacre of Kurds and puzzles over the silence of Arab "intellectuals" on these massacres, failing to recognize the nature of Islam, and the Arab supremacism of which Islam has always been, and always will be the vehicle, one realizes just how remarkable is the hold of Islam, the residual hold, even on many of those who, outwardly, now seem to be our sort, people wh think and act like Westerners. Don't be fooled, even when they fool themselves.
The Muslim-for-identification-purposes-only Muslim may still relapse, or may still, in choosing to call himself a Muslim, be open to such relapse. And in any case, the existence of such people, especially the practiced cheats and charmers among them, such as Husain Haqqani, helps to deceive unwary Infidels about the nature of Islam. Why, attacks on such people, by other Muslims still more extreme, sets up the mental equivalent of those optical illusions, where a box that is smaller than another can actually appear to be larger, depending on the surrounding visual context.
The unwillingness of a Muslim to declare himself, even to himself, an apostate, one who comes to recognize that "reform" is not possible (as the truth-telling Magdi Allam finally realized) in Islam, and to recognize its effects on minds (taught not to question, but to acquire the habit of mental submission), and hearts (taught to hate all non-Muslims, and to see the world as divided between Muslims and non-Muslims, and a state of permanent war -- though not necessarily of open warfare -- to exist between the two camps)means that he must always be considered as, potentially, someone who will turn. Given the fashion, in policy-making circles, to have at least one Muslim on the staff to advise -- Vali Nasr for Holbrooke, Daria Mogahed for Obama, and who knows who is on staff for Hillary Clinton -- or the dangerous reliance on venal and sinister apologists for Islam. Think of John Esposito, think of Raymond Close, think of Eugene Bird and Mrs. Bird, think of James Akins, think of all those outwardly-respectable former diplomats to Arab countries, who now, well-ensconced in sinecures at those foreign policy groups that ostentatiously wrap themselves in the mantle of "American national interest" (as opposed, you see, to those "pro-Israel groups" that cannot possibly be promoting the "American national interest") and who are supported, directly or indirectly, by Arab money who for years have misrepresented Arab and Muslim attitudes and intentions, and have essentially been, and remain, shills for the Arabs not only in the obvious case, that of sweetly promoting the "Palestinians" -- that is, the shock troops of the still-unreocgnized Jihad against Israel, but also in such matters as energy policy, where without a recognition of the use, by the Saudis and others, of the Money Weapon, in funding the world-wide Jihad, there is unlikely to be the kind of support for taxes on oil and gasoline that, for other reasons, are needed).
Deception may be obvious in the case of this policeman in Afghanistan, or in the many other such examples of Afghan or Iraqi police and army who turned on their Infidel trainers and supposed comrades-in-arms, or for that matter, the examples of Muslims in the American military who killed fellow, but non-Muslim, soldiers, or deserted to the other side, or offered to provide intelligence so that attacks could be made on their units or their ships.
But Deception, Muslim deception, about the nature of Islam, and therefore about the permanent and immutable threat of Muslim populations to the non-Muslims among whom they have been allowed, so naively and so dangerously, to settle -- that is not yet recognized, that is not yet obvious to more than a few. But it will be.
When we engage these defenders of Islam, we need to defeat them completely and then move quickly o squelch any remnants of Islam, close all mosques, apostate all muslims through an edict handed down by the US Military. This edict will simply declare that all muslims are no longer muslim and Islam no longer exists.
Then we can minister to the newly freed souls and begin the long term goal of rebuilding the wounded land into nation that turns toward the light of Greece and not the darkness of Mecca.
"But Deception, Muslim deception, about the nature of Islam, and therefore about the permanent and immutable threat of Muslim populations to the non-Muslims among whom they have been allowed, so naively and so dangerously, to settle -- that is not yet recognized, that is not yet obvious to more than a few. But it will be."
Yet another great post Hugh. Just want to emphasize the "settle" aspect of your point to "settling and exponential expansion" of muslim populations that we naively allow. Isn't polygamy illegal?!! The imam killed by the FBI in Detroit had TWELVE! kids and how many wives?
And how many other muslims are "going forth and multiplying" at our future and present expense? Even if the Mormons are equally guilty of the crime,we at least KNOW they're on our side.
I feel sorry for the womenfolk of these barbarians. However I think the best thing to do is to leave these people to it. We cannot impose western values on them. Its a waste of time, treasure and most importantly lives. We should get out of Afghanistan and impose a cordon sanitaire around it. Similiarly we should leave the Pakistanis, Iranians, Iraqis alone. We should react decisively without regard to loss of (muslim) life to each and every terrorist action. We should close our borders to immigrants, kick out the terrorists and thier families already resident and strip them of citizenship. We should ban mosque building unless they allow christian churches or places of worship in muslim countries. We should curtail drastically our use of oil and have a manhattan project to replace it. We should educate the populous of the west as to the threat posed by Islam and strip away the untruths of the western liberal elites. If push comes to shove and they threaten us in a major nuclear or biological way we should threaten to nuke the bastards and if neccesary follow it up. I am not going to sit around and be invaded by these barbarous hordes and if I have to defend myself, my family, culture and beliefs I will. These cretins only recognise force.
Mentoring sounds like a thankless job. This could've been the result of improper sensitivity training. Like in Sept when an Afghan policeman shot a US soldier for drinking water during Ramadan.
(though i'm not sure why an Afghan policeman killed two US soldiers last month) or last year when Afghan police killed two other US soldiers...

Excellent.
This proves once and for all what Afghans are like. Five British soldiers murdered in a sneak attack, on top of American soldiers earlier on. The likes of Winston Churchill, Lord Roberts, Rudyard Kipling and a whole host of Victorians would be branded as bigots and racists were they alive today to offer their sound advice. But thats political correctness and our troops are discovering the hard way that countries like Afghanistan and Iraq are nothing like Northern Ireland. If I hear mention of "They'll use their experiences gained in Northern Ireland" again, I'm sure my head will explode. Afghans are hostile to infidels - fact, as are all Muslims, because that is the only way to live according to the Koran. Their hearts and minds cannot be won. A rattlesnake is more trustworthy - at least it will use its rattle to warn people away, whilst in sharp contrast, these Muslims will smile at you today, make you think they're your friend, then proceed to shoot you in the back tomorrow. Rudyard Kipling had these lines in his poem "The Young British Soldier" which he wrote in 1892:
When you're wounded and alone on Afghanistan's plains.
And the women come out to cut up what remains.
Jus' roll to your rifle and blow out your brains.
And go to your Gawd like a soldier.
These lines are a reminder of what Afghans are like. Uncivilized, brutal, hateful, barbaric and misogynistic cutthroats. The life they had under the Taliban is the life they want to have, but politically correct Western politicians refuse to see that. There is the story of a US SEAL commander who lost 19 of his men in an ambush in Afghanistan because he gave the benefit of the doubt to a few goatherds, fearing the liberal libels that would appear in the press and the courtroom battles that would come had these goatherds been shot dead to keep a special ops operation secret. These goatherds showed their gratitude for being spared by telling the local Taliban, and we know the rest. That is what we can expect and nothing else. Nobody is innocent, not even a woman or a child in that godforsaken and backward Stone Age hellhole. They're all hostile with a voracious will to kill the infidel. Always have been and always will be. All the money in the world won't win them over. They've no desire to own Mercedes Benzes, Rolex watches, live in luxury villas and spend half their lives on world cruises. They don't want to become eminent scientists, and achieve everlasting fame by finding cancer cures. They only want to kill, and have more Islam, Islam, Islam rammed down their throats, and cut our throats. That is their purpose in life. Our Victorian ancestors knew that, yet we bumble along like idiots in our PC stupor, afraid of telling it as it is, lest we upset Muslims and the Leftist Taliban supporters and get branded as racists and bigots.
British soldiers have found the Afghan policemen, that they are supposed to be mentoring, to be arrogant, indolent and insolent. Not only are our soldiers being exposed to great danger from this drugged crazed, corrupt rabble they also have to take their insults and indifferent behaviour which undermines our boys' professionalism and ability to do their job.
Is it ever going to sink in? The enemy isn't iran, al-quaeda, hizbolah or the taliban; the enemy is ISLAM. There are no moderate moslems, and there never will be any. To believe mein koranf is to be an enemy of humanity, pure and simple. Why do we continue to squander the precious young lives of our soldiers on these fool's errands?
If moslems are ever to become civilized, it'll have to come from them - why should we care if they want to live in the ninth century? Our military should be doing two things; ensuring that those in islamic countries stay there and rounding up and deporting all the treacherous, ungrateful weasels we have so foolishly allowed to infest our free and tolerant countries before they do any more damage.
Islam and democracy can never coexist.
What do you think the highlighted passage means in my post above? It explicity says Islam is the problem. It is the very thing that links the biggest enemy infidels have faced for centuries and will face for centuries to come.
So many excellent posts above, but what are they worth if we cannot do something to bring our boys home. These people are simply not worth one of our loved one's lives. We should leave forthwith and as we depart turn to face them and fire. Justice indeed.
