Archbishop: Iraqi Christians suffer "'religious persecution' caused by a social system that is inspired by a view of the Quran"

"Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, (even if they are) of the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued." -- Koran 9:29

"Scholar: Christians Fighting More Than Iraqi State: Archbishop Says Social System Is Root of Persecution," by Jesús Colina for Zenit, November 17 (thanks to John):

ROME, NOV. 17, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The problems faced by Christians in Iraq are not caused by the state, but the very social system, says one representative of the Catholic community there.

Archbishop Jules Mikhael Al-Jamil, procurator of the Syrian Catholic Patriarchate in Rome, presented this analysis at a press meeting organized at the Italian Chamber of Deputies.

The prelate, 71, said that in Iraq's social system, Christians have no supports to defend themselves, thus becoming easy victims of common criminals or terrorist groups.

He said their situation can be called a "religious persecution" caused by a social system that is inspired by a view of the Quran, according to which Islam and its followers must dominate and regard believers of other religions as citizens with fewer rights.

The archbishop, expert in Arab culture and literature, explained that according to the Quran, Islam is a religion that is above all others.

In the past in Iraq (and some still hold this view), "Christians who were under a Muslim regime or doctrine were free to believe in Islam, to leave their land, or to pay a tax to live in peace," he said.

Nevertheless, Archbishop Al-Jamil noted, Christians used to be a quite influential minority. They made a decisive contribution to the country's culture in, for example, the creation and development of the first University of Baghdad. These contributions, the prelate explained, allowed them to "enjoy respect."

"But this doesn't mean that they enjoy the same rights" according to certain interpretations of the Quran, he continued. "A Christian cannot rule over a Muslim" in a Muslim regime. "A general of the army cannot be a Christian."

Now that Christians have lost their political weight and social influence, and many have abandoned their land, they suffer the persecution of a dominant social system that keeps them defenseless, Archbishop Al-Jamil said....

I think the Archbishop of Canterbury, with all his talk about the acceptability of Sharia law, should get acquainted with this Archbishop.

I should not be amazed but I am. After all the evidence, the persecution of Christians, Buddhists, Zoroastrians in fact anyone who is not a Muslum they still cannot get thier heads around the fact that Muslims do not regard anyone who is not a Muslum as less than human. When all the Christians have left Iraq who will pay Jizya, who will provide the intelectual capital needed to rebuild the country, who will be left for them to persecute apart from each other. Why does not the Pope say something, anything ? He could say Deus Vult ! As for the Archdhimmi he is a Mitre Wrapped round a theological, intelectual and moral vacuum.

Archbishop: Iraqi Christians suffer "'religious persecution' caused by a social system that is inspired by a view of the Quran".

The Archbishop is Islamophobic!...uh...he's taking things out of context!...uh...he's misinterpreting the original Arabic!...uh...it's cultural, nothing to do with Islam!...uh...Robert is hate-filled for posting this instead of touchy-feely friendship stories!...uh...everyone who posts at this site is a primtive bigotted knuckle dragger!...uh...peace...uh...

I feel a 'surge' coming on up my esophagus. This is going on with Americans still there. Wait till we leave and our trillion dollar 'democracy' will collapse into chaos in weeks and our only real friends will be the first victims.

Islam is superior to all other religions. Islam's adherents are supposed to dominate the whole world. So it's only natural that Iraq's Christians are subdued.

LOL, JeffS! Love it! But, lemme get this straight - we really badly need to step up our exports of muzzle-ems to muzzle-em countries. [Check] It would be helpful for us to increase our imports of people who love freedom and democracy. [Check] We're already dealing with a trade-deficit between ourselves and the SA. [Check] Our primary concern is to be politically correct? [Check] BINGO! The muzzle-ms get to have their ideology, their PC-ness AND all the white sheets they can wear in beautiful, sandy Saudi~aRobyah! Let's trade muzzle-ems for oil and use it to import freedom lovers from all over the world! What a system! AND it helps slow down global warming from all of that nasty, c02 emitting jihad! Export muzzle-ems and import lovers of freedom! What's not to like?

Wow. It's as if you read my mind. :)

What a calamity our "liberation" of Iraq has become for the Iraqi Christians. What a calamity. Ariel Sharon knew what he
was talking about when he begged and begged and begged Bush and his neocons on Feb. 7, 2002 not to go into Iraq and to bomb Iran from the air instead. To no avail. 7 years later, the US has nothing to show for its "regime change" in Iraq except bloody chaos and total failure. And the enemy Iran is on the brink of a great triumph. Instead of bombs, it is about to get a grand prize from the US, Anschlussing Iraq with its enormous oil wealth into the Iranian Islamo-Nazi Reich. And for that, we have lost the lives of more than 4,000 of our soldiers, and at least 3 trillions of our tax dollars, nearly killing our own country and making it totally dependent on China's credits to stay afloat.

I don't want *any* Iraqi Muslim 'refugees' coming to Australia.

but, honestly, I think we could manage to fit in *all* the Christians (suitably checked, of course, to make sure that no Muslims were trying to sneak in by pretending to be what they weren't).

For that matter, all the non-Muslim countries with troops in Iraq could consider setting up arrangements to take in Iraqi Christians...but NO MUSLIMS. Take all the Christians out (the Jews have already been pushed out by the Muslims, and have found refuge in Israel or in the West), and leave the Mohammedans to stew in their own juice, with nobody to bully and kill except each other, and nobody to do the dirty work for them, let alone the work that requires intelligence and creativity.

The Vatican and leaders of other Christian bodies in the West should be pushing hard for an Operation Magic Carpet for the persecuted Christians of Iraq (and of Egypt, and of other Islamic lands).

Israel took in the Jews of the Arab/ Islamic world. Surely 'the West' can do the same for the beleaguered, persecuted dhimmi Christians; while resolutely refusing to take in even *one* more Muslim from Iraq or from anywhere else.

You probably already realized that after Iraq and Afghanistan collapse to fundamentalists, the Obama admin will mass evacuate Muslims on "their side" to prevent "persecution", and move them into Main Street USA, complete with grants and loans to buy homes and businesses.

I wish you a happy holiday season and wonderful New Year :)

The west continues to get it wrong in regards to its understanding of the isntitutionalised religious discrimination enshrined in the Islamic system. It continues today in Bosnia, in our infantile understaning of the situtation there, as enshrined in this statement. "Inzko was referring to rising enmity between the country's main ethnic groups. Bosnia-Herzegovina is divided between two entities, Republika Srpska and the Muslim-Croat Federation, and is ruled by a tripartite presidency comprising Bosnian Serb, Croat, and Muslim (Bosniak) officials." from article http://www.rferl.org/content/UN_Security_Council_Urges_Sides_In_Bosnia_To_Work_Together/1886287.html . Sad ... there are no "ethic" differences between the religious groups in Bosnia, or Iraq. Serbs rightfully refuse to live in an Islamic majority state, but it seems the EU is determined to use Bosnia as its boiler plate for Islamic integration into Wester Europe. God speed to R.S.

Hi Jeffs, I did not know that you knew me that well !

I am an Iraqi Christian and I just stumbled upon this. I encourage all of you to research us Chaldeans/Assyrians/Syriacs. Unfortunately the number of Christians being forced out of their homes/killed by muslims is staggering. And countries only allow so many refugees to enter each year. But at the same time our culture, one of the oldest civilzations of the world, is being torn to shreds in the motherland.
Many Iraqi Christians, clergy, and political leaders here in America have been pushing for us to have an autonomous region in Northern Iraq where our ancestors lived, the Ninevah Plains. That way we would be free to practice whatever we want without the distress of being killed on the way to church. However, there is a third party involved (the kurds) which is against that.

Here are a couple articles from a few months ago with more details:

You will find the majority of Iraqi Christians in the United States today living in the cities around Metro Detroit, Chicago, San Diego, and parts of Arizona.

Glad you found us. Welcome! Thank you for the added information. I hope that some of the comments gave you some small encouragement. Point other members of your community in our direction. The more the merrier.

I am an Australian and there are some of you who have made your way to *our* country. I said it above, and I'll say it again - I wish my government would see fit to 1. put a ban on any further Muslim immigration and 2. prioritise and fast-track admissions to Australia for desperate Christians trying to leave Iraq. I have mentioned this more than once in letters to politicians.

By the way: I support the 'Barnabas Fund' which exists to support persecuted Christians, primarily in Muslim lands but also in some other nasty places. I recently donated to an appeal that they ran, specifically for aid to distressed Christians in Iraq.

Do please stick around, 'Alex', and post again: more educators, and first-hand witnesses, are always needed in Mr Spencer's Virtual Hedge School for the Resistance to Jihad and Sharia.
