Of course, that's taken wildly out of context. Every last Muslim in the world, especially in modern, moderate, secular Turkey, knows that that verse is not to be taken literally.

The impression I'm getting from PC types is that it is definitely wrong for a white man to beat his wife under any circumstances - great. But it's OK for a non-white man to do so if he can back it up with religion or culture - not so great.

I would take these figures with a pinch of salt. I think that the sample size would have been very small as most women would not want to participate in this type of ghastly propaganda against Turkey.
I know that a lot of Brits are retiring out to Turkey, and they certainly wouldn't if they thought that it was unsafe.

Hajj numbers are predicted to be a whopping 40% (that's about 800,000 muslims) down due to this flu....Maan that's a lot less prayers, and I hope this does not provoke merciful Allah's SWT wrath.
I would request the Western governments to make the flu vaccine available to the Saudis at double quick time if the flu takes hold (upto 1.2million doses of vaccine could be required). Nothing would be more tragic than seeing/hearing about hundreds of "flu martyrs" at Hajj of all places.

To yom's point, I think the sampling was small and does not reflect the real figure which is most undoubtedly much higher...I don't think many will admit abuse out of fear and then there's always the issue that most battered women don't even realize they are battered or seek help.

This is really embarrassing. Unfortunately Turkey is becoming more and more conservative. Muslim families make at least 5 children and we seculars became a minority in this country. But we won't stop fighting. We won't flee this country.
Seculars still own all the business and media in Turkey. Simply because muslims can't do quality work. But we lose elections because elections are about quantity, not quality.
Creeping Islamism in Turkey stems from government administrative support of imams and 'compulsory' religious teachings at high schools, compromising religious freedoms at all levels of society, including men's demeanor towards women.
The Kemalist ideals had been eroded in small steps since about the 1990s with steady voting demographics leaning away from a 'separation of religion and state', making more demands in favor of Islam. This is a worldwide pattern which seems to have its roots at about the same time, first really noticed in Egypt as more conservative militant Islamic elements began to really press for change in society. I noticed it over a 20 year period in Egypt going from a quasi-Western secular society, where few women wore headscarfs, to one increasingly conservative where even Christian women were harassed for not wearing them. Watching Turkey heading down the same path is disconcerting for those of us who understand the value of separating church/mosque from the state's government body.
So it more than just embarrassment to see Turkey drift towards re-Islamization of society. It actually constitutes a clear and present danger to the people of Turkey who do not subscribe to a coercive religious zeal to control everyone by their Islamic sharia tenets, especially as it impacts women in society, making them covered up hidden from view second class citizens. Not a good sign, because oppressed women are the first symptoms of a society returning to old fashioned slavery. I wish Turkey well and success in fighting this insidious aggression against universal human freedoms.
