Israr Malik, 21, of Fallowfield, Manchester, has been charged with intending to commit acts of terrorism, namely violent jihad.
Huh. The semantics police let one slip by.
Three others face charges of intending to assist others to commit terrorism.
They are Munir Farooqi, 52, of Longsight, Haris Farooqi, 26, of Levenshulme, both in Manchester, and Matthew Newton, 27, of Stalybridge.
Munir Farooqi, the father of Haris Farooqi, was also charged with three counts of soliciting or encouraging another to murder on 6 July, 15 October and 16 October this year.
'Low-key'
All four are due to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Monday.
A fifth man, aged 62, from Deane, Bolton, was released without charge. He is understood to be a Muslim cleric.
Unarmed officers from the North West Counter Terrorism Unit detained the men in what was described as a "low-key operation", following a 15-month investigation into alleged terrorist activity overseas.
About 120 people took part in a protest over the raids outside Greater Manchester Police's headquarters on Sunday.
A force spokesman said it recognised the community had some concerns regarding the investigation.

People don't even notice the absence of Islamic charity work to and for the general public. Throughout the development of the West one of the standard elements has been Christian charities helping those in need. This even included the development of schools and hospitals. In the case of Islam, except for the rare showy case meant only for publicity, there are no broad based charity programs reaching out to the greater communities. If there was at least then the constant instances of terroristic planning caught and stopped could be said to be offset by the good they were doing. They are a complete leech on the host society providing no good whatsoever only threats to the very continued existence of the host society.
They can't help us infidels, that's why. They can only give us fear.
Thinkthrice, in fact though the charitable aims of an organisation can specify the various groups they aim to help, in charity law services have to be open to all groups within the categor(ies) specified. This is in line with the equalities act. If any organisation refuses to help another person who falls within the remit of the organisations charitable aims due to race, sex, religion, they are liable to prosecution. I know this because I was a senior grants officer for 10 years in London. Perhaps a few contributors to this site who fall within a specific charitable category should try to access services provided by these so-called charities.
Tariq Ramadan was on BBC Radio4 Today programme and had some interesting things to say about Muslims in Europe and UK. Under the guise of an Islamic reformer, Ramadan says we should stop talking integration and instead celebrate diversity. We should stop looking on Muslims as a race and accept them as individuals. He says there are millions of Muslims in Europe and there are no problems with that.
Ramadan sounds plausible with his smooth style and arguments that sound intellectually based until you analyse the substance and face the facts that come in everyday of Muslims behaving in an anti-European, anti-Christian and anti-state manner. Muslims don't integrate, they don't act as individuals and there are massive problems in Europe with their numbers and conduct which is masked by the media and government from the public.
It is worth repeating that Ramadan is barred from the US, Egypt and Saudi Arabia but is Professor of Islamic Studies at Oxford University in England.
Sure, there may be laws requiring charities act equally - even Catholic adoption agencies are forced to allow same-sex couples to adopt so they just get out of the adoption business, but in the case of Muslim charities - what infidel would want what they do? If they are providing prayer rugs for instance, no one else wants them. If Muslims and Islam were generally and broadly providing benefits and charitable work to the host societies it would be noticed, but they are not.
Yes I heard him and he is one smooth talker he wants Europe and non-muslim country's to be "The house of dialogue" in between "Dar El Harb" and Dar El islam. This is the sort of thing that sells well on the BBC.
well speaking to a central manchesterite I found out the following:
-- During eid the place is stopped by intimidatory "moslem" youth driving aorund making noise with music and car horns and generally making lewd sexist remarks to non asian girls,etc all this accomodated by the police who close roads and watch while the locals and hospital suffer until past 3am in the morning.
-- women who are not moslem in the longsight area - where the imam recently wrote into the local papaer saying islam is peace - are regularly accosed by moslem yout and indeed married men - and pestered for sex, etc. There is nothing done to insist the moslem men have respect for women but lots done to try and make people have respect for Islam.
-- some mosques in longsight manchester - aside from bringing the streets to a halt with traffic on friday - broadcast their noise onto the streets. The council have told a black church they can't have a service on sunday afternoon as it disturbs the sunday peace for the locals. The council have not stopped moslems making a noise at eid, and regularly inconveniencing everyone and broadcasting a noise on friday prayers.
Apparently some Asians (as the indian immigrants from pakistan and bangledesh are confusingly called) who are not supporters of Islamic surpremism and who want a better life in the west are very scared because they expect a backlash from everyone else against the anti-social separatist violent moslems and they fear being a target of the inevitable.
Thus the politicaly correct police and council are fueling a future blood bath that will have the blood of many innocent people both moslem and not....

It is the same north of Manchester, Greater Manchester Police are terrified of them. Any trouble and the police hide until it is over. But as far as I know the racket at the end of eid is nothing like as bad as in Longsight.
Longsight in Manchester was the site of the recent desecration of Christian burial grounds when Muslims took over the old Anglican church of St John the Apostle and Evangelist and turned it into a mosque. Headstones and graves where crushed by earth moving machines while the Muslim contractor turned the burial area into a carpark for the mosque. The council don't seem to have exercised their planning control here and neither has the church whose responsibility to those buried or remembered within the confines of the old church grounds has disappeared in the face of Muslim pressure.
