Even though most translations of Qur'an Chapter 4, Verse 34, say beat your disobedient wives, and a couple say whip your disobedient wives, or the equivalent (the first definition of "chastise," remember, is punish by beating or whipping), what Qur'an Chapter 4, Verse 34, really means in Arabic is "Beg your wife to come to marriage counseling," and also, "Wash your wife's feet and the dishes."

I doubt seriously that Allah would use the terminology 'if it is useful'...It's just not him...It is more likely that it, and the 'lightly' in Yusuf Ali, were 'translators additions', which is probably why 'lightly' does not appear in the other translations...The translators who edited the Quran texts, by adding their own brands of taqiyya, are guilty of 'changing their religion'...

I suspect that part of the reason some translators have inserted (lightly) is that there are some hadiths where Muhammad says to go easy on one's wives, or other things that indicate the beating, or whipping, is to be light. Hmmm. What is a light beating? Do feminists mind getting a "light" beating for being disobedient to their husbands? And one imam's "light" beating might be another imam's "heavy" beating. Furthermore, somewhere Muhammad says that a Muslim man shall not be questioned about beating his wives. Can anyone produce that hadith and its location?
