A number of Arabic and Pashtu interpreters at the terror-war detention center at Guantanamo Bay are under active investigation for omitting valuable intelligence from their translations of detainee interrogations, among other security breaches. This could taint some of the evidence at the "9/11 trial" in New York and proceedings against other detainees.Remarkably, the Pentagon never cleaned up the "mole infestation" at its highest-security facility after the FBI busted a Muslim spy ring at Gitmo in 2003.
The 2003 probe involved at least two Arabic interpreters with high-level security clearance. Senior Airman Ahmad al-Halabi, a Syrian native, and former Army linguist Ahmed Mehalba, an Egyptian native, were later convicted of stealing or mishandling classified documents.
Six years later comes a new problem with Muslim personnel who have virtually unfettered access to detainees and intelligence at Gitmo. Professional military security and intelligence officials at Gitmo did the preliminary probe, then prepared a classified summary and are now briefing top officials and members of Congress in Washington. An active FBI criminal probe is also under way.
The possible new spy ring involves several Arabic linguists, some also Egyptian and Syrian immigrants. They're suspected of, among other things:
* Omitting valuable intelligence from their translations of interrogations.
* Slipping notes to detainees inside copies of the Koran.
* Coaching detainees to make allegations of abuse against interrogators.
* Meeting with suspects on the terror watchlist while back in the United States.
Officials say some of the suspected "dirty" linguists -- who met privately in a locked mosque at Gitmo -- have had access to 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed and other high-value al Qaeda detainees.
"Three years of investigations have revealed the presence of pro-jihad/anti-Western activities among the civilian-contractor and military-linguist population serving Joint Task Force Guantanamo," states a copy of a classified Gitmo briefing, prepared in May for the FBI, CIA and Congress' intelligence committees....

If they fed intelligence to these repatriated detainees, then al Qaeda and the Taliban may know what we know about them and adjust accordingly.
Prisoners released from Gitmo are allowed to keep their Korans -- and it's camp policy not to search the holy books. Non-Muslim personnel can't even touch them. There's no telling what military secrets have been compromised.
Also in question is just how far the enemy has penetrated our critical foreign-language program -- not just at Gitmo, but across the entire national security and intelligence complex. Many Arabic linguists are contractors who rotate in and out of the federal security agencies leading the War on Terror."

Israel has all kinds of people who are native speakers of Arabic. And some of those Arabic-speaking Jews live here. So do many Copts, who while they may go along with the party-line when still trapped in Egypt, start to speak more forthrightly once they are in the free West, showing that they are well aware of the menace of Islam. Assyrian and Chaldean Christians are leaving Iraq, some of them coming here, and some already here. There is no need -- none -- to hire Arabic-speakers who are Muslim. What needs to be acquired, and it isn't hard, is some acquaintance with the Qur'an and the events of Muhammad's life, which are both sources of everyday allusion in the speech of Muslims.
One particularly successful practitioner of both intelligence and counter-inteligence, against the Muslim threat, is Jean-Louis Bruguiere, who has just retired from his official duties in France. Why not hire him, and possibly one or two Israelis, to bring some no-nonsense realism to the task, and let them "train the Americans" in such intelligence work just a sthe Americans are trying to "train the Afghanis" -- but, one hopes, with better success.

What is wrong with our State Department? There are trustworthy Americans, who have offered their translation skills, and have been ignored. My dentist contacted our government after 9 11 and practically begged to translate Arabic. He was really bummed out that they couldn't be bothered with him. He wanted to help his adopted country so much, he would have worked for free. He's a Christian who immigrated from Syria about 30 years ago. He became an American citizen and he's very distressed about what he sees happening here now. He grew up around Muslims and it wasn't a good experience. He said they would smile and speak nicely to your face and then rip you to shreds behind your back. That was the usual routine, not the exception. In general, he couldn't believe them or trust them. My dentist is a very well educated, very dedicated American, who wanted to use his Arabic language skills to help his country. But, they blew him off. He told me of another person like him, who truly wanted to help, but was also ignored. Who is running the show, and why are they hiring traitors, instead of patriots? Don't they vet these people?
And yet there is a ban on hiring Arabic Jews as translators because of a single episode of espionage (Jonathan Pollard) back in the 90s.
When will the madness cease? Hugh is dead-on; there are thousands of Iraqi Christians who have been forced to leave their homeland and are today languishing idly as refugees in Syria and Jordan. They could be invaluable to us.
JW: Actually, it is rather surprising since there seems to be an ample amount of Islamic theological discourse that has called upon American Muslims to be law-abiding citizens and respectfully engage in American society. Yusuf Qaradawi, as a prominent example, has been quite clear that American Muslims should avoid any behavior that even gives the appearance of acting as an unlawful fifth column. He has called quite specifically, as I understand it, for the use of Fiqh al Muwazant to be utilized, employing juristic preference in situations such as when an American Muslim soldier might be deployed against enemy Muslim fighters.

The Pollard case goes back to 1985, and Pollard is entering his 25th year of captivity. And though what he did was wrong, I've never seen evidence of substantive damage suffered by the US clearly attributable to his actions. Though I was considered for a position with one of those three-letter-agencies back in 1980 or so (I think one of those reviewing my app was actually Jewish), I doubt I'd be considered today. Even then, one of the investigators sent to my old home town asked a neighbor if he thought I might be a "Zionist".
But that's off topic. The story is reported that almost 100 Jews with Arabic background in New York sought to work with the FBI as translators after 9/11. Their country, and their city, had just been attacked after all. A few were Israelis with intelligence experience. Not one was accepted.
There are indeed thousands of Chaldeans, Assyrians, Copts, Bahais, Christians, and - yes - Jews from Arab lands, Turkey, Iran, etc. that would offer their skills to help protect this country. But instead, groups like the CIA continue with their outreach in Hizbullah friendly Dearborn, Michigan - aka Dearbornistan. Some people just refuse to learn.

I just want to know who wrote that report; they should be fired. They are making muslins look bad. No way their religion allows that type of behavior I have learned on Presidential authority. The government is not allowed to interfere with freedom of religion; anything said in a mosque or secreted in a qwhoran is private and confidential. We need to support American standards of law enforcement and attorney (translator)-client privledge and stop worrying about silly things like so-called 'terrorism'. its time to stop scapegoating and embrace our diversity.

The south Sudanese could also be useful. A friend of mine is an interpreter who is fluent in Arabic but the government (which employs him) will not use him for Arabic interpreting, only for Dinka. They want Arabs for Arabic interpreting, and I suspect Muslims demand Muslim interpreters, but do it sneakily, saying they can't understand the Arabic of a south Sudanese.
Makes me laugh when I hear pious moslems talk about fitting in, not making waves follow your contries rule, etc, etc. It's something you hear from the smarter moslems who happen to be out numbered, and realize, it's not time yet.
What is worse is that our intelligence services are deliberately, as a point of policy, not recruiting from other populations that are culturally and linguistically fluent, and are more inclined to be honest and friendly toward America and Americans.
The are all sorts of groups in and from the middle east that could help. Copts, Assyrians, Hindus, Jews, Bahais, Catholics, on and on ... that know the local languages, the local culture, the local slang, often more than one language -- and who have reasons to want to do right by America -- who have reason to want to expose and destroy the jihaddis.

Grover Norquist, Republican head of an anti-tax institution, has a dark side favoring Islam. He was influential in getting Muslims planted all over the federal government under Bush. They are still in important positions and are undoubtedly responsible for the non-hiring of non-Muslim translators with native Arabic understanding, and explicitly looking for jihad-supporting Muslims when it comes to sensitive positions, like Gitmo translators. Obama has most likely followed Bush on hiring Muslims instead of non-Muslims for translators.
