Until recently you would never have seen women presenting television programmes dressed from head to toe in the niqab or burqa. But on the Saudi religious channel Awtan TV it has now become the norm.Female broadcasters at the station are draped in the all-enveloping dresses, which are usually black and also cover their faces.
The work environment too is very different. Male technical assistants do not enter the studio while the women are presenting.
There are more than 60 religious channels across the Middle East. Some allow women to present programmes without being fully covered or dressed in black.
Others have no women presenters at all.

Awtan TV decided to take a unique approach. The station was launched in 2008, and last month it set a precedent by allowing women to present, but only on the condition that they wear the niqab....

There is actually a benefit to this. In the West presenters are chosen with their looks often a primary consideration, sometimes it would seem to the detriment of intelligence or other more important factors. If they are all covered up then their looks won't matter and the most interesting or intelligent could be selected. Of course there would still be bias toward those with a pleasing voice and whatever other mannerisms are detectable even when covered with a black sheet. How many of todays talking skirts would still have their job if their looks were of zero value to the network?

There is no reason in the world why the readers of news items, with every word already scripted, should not be chosen, in part, for their looks. The mistake is only when those chosen for their looks are allowed to think they have brains and to be given tasks that only the intelligent ought to be given. But being a news-reader, a mezzobusto, capable of the right pauses and observing the right modulations in the voice, is not among those tasks.
If that set had a black carpet they'd look like a couple of OREOS.

Again we see that what goes on in the Islamic world and parodies of what goes on in the Islamic sphere of mankind are very often indistinguishable and this is as telling about Islam as anything. On television, even MALES are chosen for their looks, not just the women.
While they might not necessarily be pretty-boy types, they do tend towards the trustworthy in appearance (I'm thinking here of Canadian presenters like Lloyd Robertson and Peter Mansbridge - not hotties, no, but trustworthy-looking, fatherly types. CBC News Now presenter Ian Hadamansing I would say was chosen for his voice - he is pleasing to listen to.) CTV Calgary has some good-looking female presenters, that don't come off as the "bimbo" type - simply neat, well-tended and well-dressed.
Sorry, I had only limited television until recently, and now I have no TV at all; now I watch Global National news online when I think about it, and that's about it, and off the top of my head I couldn't even even tell you who the presenter is now.
So maybe the men should wear garbage bags over their heads too? Or perhaps news should be only on the radio?
If they were spun at a high enough RPM,all colours of the spectrum would be seen. The only other use for this inanimate display (imo) would be for adjusting contrast or convergence on a mis-aligned TV set.

The decision to view a woman as an object based on her clothing is ultimately in the eye of the beholder. The burqa/niqab ensemble is the ultimate denial of that, blaming the woman and placing all of the responsibility on her to deflect it.

Speaking of television presenters:
here in Australia we get, at certain times of day, on SBS, direct feeds from assorted overseas 'national news' broadcasters. No subtitles; all in original language. German, French, Italian, Russian, and so on. It is *fascinating* to observe what kinds of people different societies choose to read their Official National News, and what they dress them in.
A few years back when I used to watch regularly, this is what I recall noticing:
Italy? - mostly, delectable and well-endowed females with low, low-necklines.
France? - mostly, gentlemen in their mid-40s, dressed in suits. As you put it, Spirit Wolf 'trustworthy-looking fatherly types'.
Russia? - very pretty ladies, 20s-30s, usually conservatively garbed and discreetly made-up.
The need under Islam for women to remain covered essentially proves the worthlessness of Islam spiritually. If Islam was anything more than just a rote repetition of meaningless gibberish and following absurd rules, if in the slightest way it acted on the heart and soul to make the believer a better person, then the men of Islam would not need the women to be covered up, they would be able to view women and admire their beauty without harm to anyone, and the women, in covering up by force don't even get the benefit of covering up out of pure modesty to please their god or their society. If one sees a Catholic nun and recognizes the commitment and voluntary life of sacrifice, seeing them in a habit has an entirely different meaning, it is comforting and it is on their part a true act of devotion to God. But in the case of Islam you can rest assured that many if not most of the women covered up are seething with rage, full of hate for their situation and the fact that they are covered up. Islam is a true disgrace in too many ways to list. Everything it touches turns to crap.

Anyway, a certain former female journalist just came to mind. Adrienne Clarkson once hosted an addedum to the CBC National called The Journal. She later became Governor-General, and she didn't need to wear a sack to achieve that status.

The only reason that anyone can complain about the seeming choice of bimbos to present the news in the West is that for the most part what they are reading, the news they are presenting, is crap. If they were presenting hard hitting news stories, such as what is reported here on JihadWatch, or delving below the most superficial level on anything of importance then I for one would not care, in fact I would prefer, if they were stunning beauties, with professional makeup artists back stage and wardrobes fit for a queen. But given what they are reading it almost seems as though they need to find someone not all together there just to be able to read the script with feeling.
For a succesful satire of niqab'ed "presenters", read Christopher Buckley's "Florence of Arabia." All in all, I'd just as soon have female talking airheads talking through their niqabs as male talking airheads talking through their hats.

Susanp, you are correct as to the view of women in societies subjugated by Islam, I was sort of joking about what it might mean for our society. And I don't think that it is correct to characterize the Muslim men as oversexed or perpetually horny, their problem is that their religion promotes a stunted view of humanity, male and female alike, and they can't control their own emotions, they are pathetic and weak due to being spiritually weak due to Islam. Sexually their societies are also perverse in that while they simultaneously hide their women and use them primarily for procreation, they engage in homosexuality including with young boys, even while publicly condemning homosexuality and rigorously prosecuting, even killing those who don't keep that aspect of their society deeply hidden. Islam is flawed on many levels, it creates disturbed and dysfunctional societies, it destroys individuals and families, it has no right to be in the West, it will destroy Western democracies and freedoms if allowed to spread here.
