Profiling! Islamophobia! No, wait... More on this story. "Passenger Lights Explosive on Delta Flight," from CBS News, December 25:
A Northwest Airlines passenger landing in Detroit on Friday tried to blow up the flight but the explosive device failed, two U.S. national security officials said.
The passenger, who was traveling on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 from Amsterdam, was not identified. He was being questioned Friday evening, according to one of the officials, both of whom spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.
The Delta/Northwest confusion stems from an ongoing consolidation following the merger of the two companies in 2008.
The motive of the Christmas Day attack was not immediately clear.
"He appears to have had some kind of incendiary device he tried to ignite," said one of the U.S. officials.
A senior law enforcement source speaking to CBS News has identified the suspect as Nigerian national Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23.
After the plane landed at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, the suspect lit and set off what were at first described as fireworks or firecrackers but may have been another type of explosive. The explosive apparently lit the lower part of the suspect's body. He was immediately subdued and restrained and was later transported to a hospital burn unit.
Two other people suffered minor injuries.
The suspect has told federal investigators that he was sent by al Qaeda. He claims he picked up the explosive material in Yemen and was instructed to set it off on board an airplane. Those claims could not immediately be verified.
The suspect was on a U.S. government watch list of people with suspected terrorist ties. He is still being questioned.
"This does not strike us as having the earmarks of any kind of well-planned or well-orchestrated attack," a senior security official told CBS News.
That all remains to be seen. But a case of Sudden Jihad Syndrome certainly isn't reassuring.

Let's see....his name is on a "watch list" yet nothing extra seems to have been done. He somehow gets explosives on the plane, thanks to Amsterdam security and the original departing airport. That's 2 checks, unless he picked up the explosives in Amsterdam.

Are victims of "well planned" bombings somehow more dead? If the bombings aren't "well planned" is the insinuation there that we should worry less?

So he should have been searched before boarding, but of course that would be "profiling", and we can't have that, can we? Much better to put 200+ people in danger of being murdered. Instead, Fox News is reporting that all passengers everywhere can expect longer security delays, and should arrive even earlier before their flights.
The end-point will be to have all passengers enter changing-rooms before flights, strip off their clothes, and don one-piece throwaway plastic coveralls for the flight, and put all their clothes in a bag, to be searched by "security" before the flight and reclaimed at the destination. During the flight, passengers will be hand-cuffed to their seats, and will need to call an attendant to release them when they need to use the restroom. And everybody will go along with this, because the alternative is the dreaded "racist" "profiling". Welcome to the future.

I agree, Opus—these guys are heroes! They stopped this Jihad terrorist, just as other airline passengers stopped shoe bomber Richard Reid, and the heroes of Flight 93 prevented the bombing of the Capitol or the White House on 9/11.

I have been flying Delta to go visit my family yearly and someimes several times a year.
You do not need to take a belt off or your shoes.
Delta does question you about your bags and that is all.Like that is going to help.

How very reassuring that the Islamic Terrorist got through security at two points and still almost managed to blow up a plane full of innocent people. THe passegers should start charging the airlines for their efforts to maintain security!!!
The ingenuity with which these moslems behaving badly approach murder is incredible. If they placed one tenth of their attention on making the world a better place, how much better of a place would the world be?
The fact is the scum approaching this will not give up. Although unsuccessful, these representatives of the religion of peace are experimenting on ways to use a human bomb to take down an innocent plane load of infidels. Shoebomber Reid and now powder legs Umar Farouk Abdulmutallabhere, are in a long line of muslim scientists experimenting on mass murder of infidels.
We need to be preventive not reactive. These muslims will continue trying to perfect this system of murder until successful. What appears inventive here is the the plastiche explosive was hidden in a plastic syringe so that the contents of the syringe would get through security. Also inventive is to carry a flaming powder on your legs and presto you can blow yourself up and the plane you are riding on. Convert yourself into a bomb without the traditional belt. It did not work this time, but worry here that moslem scientists are working to perfect this mayhem.

The terrorists will most likely target American airlines.
American airlines re-entering the US should have copies of these lists and deny passage to anyone listed, independent of the airport security. That would not stop it all, but it might catch some.
Congress would have to pass a law authorizing it otherwise CAIR-ACLU subversives will have their PC lawyers hassleing the airlines.
In parallel, inform all non-American airlines they cannot discharge Muslim passengers in the USA, visa or not, period.
Obama and Holder need to have their feet held to the fire on this.
