The Kerala High Court on Wednesday stated that forced conversions, termed as Love Jihad or Romeo Jihad, and efforts for that were a reality in the State despite the arguments by the Kerala Director General of Police, and Union Home Department to the contrary.Stating that the State Government had the responsibility to check forced conversions, the court asked it to formulate legislation on the lines of the other States.
Rejecting a petition for anticipatory bail in a Love Jihad case filed by Shehenshah, a Muslim youth, who had allegedly forced a non-Muslim MBA girl student of a Pathanamthitta college in the name of love, the court said that campuses should not be turned into venues for forced conversions through false love affairs.
Justice KT Sankaran also rejected another petition seeking a ban on the use of the terms Love Jihad and Romeo Jihad.
Earlier, Kerala DGP Jacob Punnoose had submitted in the court that no evidence was available to prove the existence of an organised movement in the State, specialising in converting non-Muslim girls into Islam through treacherous love affairs. Subsequently, the Union Home Department told the court that it had no information of any movement anywhere in the country specialising in such conversion methods.
Justice Sankaran also pointed out that the reports submitted by top police officials in the State were of contradictory in nature. The DGP had told the court that there were no "actionable" evidences to suggest that such a conversion campaign was on in Kerala but indications of possibility of such a programme was there. The court also said that 14 out of the 18 reports from SPs on the matter, submitted by the DGP, were of no value or use.
However, police reports themselves had made it clear that forced conversions through love affairs as a movement had been going on in Kerala since 1996. The judge said that the police reports had indicated that about 4,000 conversions had taken place through love affairs in the past four years, and 2,800 girls of other religions had undergone conversion into Islam in this period.
He also said that 1,600 such conversions had taken place in four northern districts, including Malappuram, Kerala's Muslim-majority district. It was evident from the report submitted by the DGP that outfits like Islamist Popular Front of India (earlier NDF) and its student wing, the Campus Front, were behind the organised campus-based conversion programme, said Justice Sankaran.
He added that the DGP's report had also indicated that Muslim conversion centres had been functioning in Kozhikode district.
Though the Constitution guaranteed equal rights to all religions, the right for faith should not be used for forced conversions and conversions through treachery, the judge said. Mixed marriages could be promoted but such marriages should not be used as tools for forced or treacherous conversions, he pointed out.
He also said that several other States had formulated legislations for preventing forced conversions and the people and the Government of Kerala should consider formulation of such legislation in view of the particular context.

The media is totally ignoring the plight of women in muslim countries.
The continued legacy of barbaric and violent Islamic ideology. Millions of non Muslim women and girls have been kidnapped, raped and coerced into this retarded and despicable ideology of Islam. It continues to this day unabated.
Hindus, Jews, Christians, anybody non-Muslim: the women of all groups are being deliberately targeted by Muslim men, worldwide. All over the world, there is a conscious attempt by Muslims to take the women of other groups: they do it mostly by stealth, deceit, bribery, seduction, flattery, in those countries where non-Muslims are still more numerous and powerful than Muslims; in other places, wherever they [the Muslims] feel themselves strong enough, they simply *snatch* the women and girls.
And some people are waking up to what Sikhs and Hindus, those with sense, have known for years: that one warns one's daughters to stay right away from Muslims, at all costs.
I understand that in Israel Arab Muslim men - sometimes using elaborate deceit, sometimes even going so far as to pretend to be Jews - have been going after Jewish Israeli girls. Nonie Darwish mentions a case of a Muslim man from Gaza who seized a Jewish girl and took her into Gaza to use as his slave-wife, for years. I think there is now at least one organisation in Israel that is trying to raise the alarm amongst the Jews there, and warning girls to be on their guard.
The Copts have been trying to raise the alarm for years - their daughters and sons, too, have not only been seduced by elaborate deceptions, but also simply seized, and raped, and drugged, and 'converted', for decades. The whole thing is encouraged and even financially rewarded by the Saudis.
Fr Daniel Sysoyev, who was recently martyred in Russia, assassinated by Muslim sharia-enforcers because he evangelised among Muslims, criticised Islam, and wrote books and did video clips critical of Islam, wrote a book warning Russian [non-Muslim] women against marrying Muslims.
The Catholic church in Italy, I understand, has also been warning Italian Catholic women against getting involved with Muslims.
Canon Dr Patrick Sookhdeo of the Anglican church in the UK, and his wife Rosemary, have been warning their fellow Anglicans - and Christians of other persuasions, too - that there is a deliberate campaign going on, by Muslims in the West, to trick/ seduce women (*especially* women from overtly Christian backgrounds!) into marrying Muslims.
This might be a good place to mention Canon Sookhdeo's wife Rosemary's excellent little book, 'Stepping into the Shadows', which contains many, many cautionary tales of western women - not just dozy bints, but some quite intelligent and instructed Christians - who get seduced/ tricked by plausible smiling Muslim men, marry them, and then...discover that their handsome prince has turned into a toad. Fortunately, some of the tales end happily, with the woman shaking off the curse/ spell, and getting the hell out of dodge.
Mrs Sookhdeo's book should be in every parish library, and every high school library, and school and university chaplains should share it with the young non-Msulim women; along with showing them Ayaan Hirsi Ali's 'Submission' and giving them Nonie Darwish's 'Cruel and Usual Punishment' to read (the first half, which deals with marriage and family under Islam).
There is also 'Cassandra' (nom de plume) who has written 'Escape! from an Arab Marriage' and '33 Secrets Arab Men Don't Tell American Women' (she should really rename it '33 Secrets Muslim Men Don't Tell Infidel women', so as to reach a broader audience).
All we here who are parents of nubile daughters need to think how we can best warn our daughters and help them to be smart and stay safe, and avoid getting suckered by a Mohammedan toad pretending to be a handsome prince.
