"Extremists are putting the republic to the test by promoting a practice that they know is contrary to the basic principles of our country." And those "extremists" have plenty of enablers who can't fathom what the problem is with the dehumanizing symbol of segregation and subjugation (spun as "elevation" in classic Orwellian fashion) that the face veil is.
An update on this story. "France proposes ban on Islamic veils," from Deutsche Welle, December 23:
France's ruling party, the conservative Union Pour un Mouvement Populaire (UMP), says it plans to present a bill to parliament in January, which would ban full Islamic veils in all public places. The bill is to be presented in the first two weeks of next month, just before the conclusions of a French parliamentary inquiry on the burqa and niqab are published.
Jean-Francois Cope, the parliamentary party leader of the UMP, said the measure was meant to defend France from extremists.
"There are principles at stake: Extremists are putting the republic to the test by promoting a practice that they know is contrary to the basic principles of our country," he said.
Veils "not welcome" in France
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said that veils that hide women's faces in public are "not welcome" in France. Most politicians say they would like to see the results of the parliamentary inquiry on the veils before they decide on the need for a law.
According to French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux, about 1,900 women in France wear full Islamic veils. Hortefeux has said that applications for French citizenship or residence by burqa wearing women, along with their husbands, should be "systematically" refused. However, reports by French intelligence services put the number of women wearing burqas at "fewer than 400."
In the Paris newspaper Le Figaro, Cope said that the move was "a law of liberation" and not a ban.
A complete ban on Islamic veils could be met with legal obstacles, in the same way the Swiss ban on minarets was challenged by the European Court of Human Rights. The French government has already been accused of racism with regard to its campaign to discuss national identity....
And which race is Islam again?
Banning the veil is one thing, enforcing the ban if passed is another...maybe France can move into the 21st century....but it should be prepared to use force...Islam's followers are....

Good for France!
Let's not forget that wearing veils or burqas will easily defeat facial recognition software and allow cross-dressing or female jihadists to move unchallenged through our communities.
The recent push to allow wearing of burqas/veils by muslims in the West seems to roughly coincide with the efforts to develop such law enforcement tools. The better we get at identifying them quickly, the more they demand to be allowed to hide their identifying features.
Two-thirds of all Muslim imams in France are on welfare which means that the French taxpayers are effectively subsidising the propagation of Islam in that country, author Christopher Caldwell has said.

Encouraged by the Swiss referendum on minarets some French politicians want to ban the burka. One would presume that in a country that is already occupied by more than 6 million Mohammedans, with 780 “no go zones”, 100 carbeques on a quiet night and streets that are closed off for demonstrative Friday “prayers” they would start debating over how to reverse the Mohammedan invasion. But no, its the burqa that bugs them. But even if they ban it, who will enforce the ban?
There is an underlying theme which courses through this and similar battles; the Europen Union has been and will continue to be a cataclysmic disaster. Any member country which still values its freedom and its national identity ought to immediately secede from it. When enough countries have done so, prosecutions of its quisling, traitorous architects should be initiated and vigorously pursued.
What makes any people strong is its national pride and distinct culture; What on earth is wrong with being proudly Polish, British, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Ukranian, etc, etc., and interacting with other states as equals?
When one mixes all the colors in the paintbox he ends up with grey. Nothing is easier for the disciples of the great paedophile to subvert than a self-depreciatory, monolithic consortium eager to apologize for its own existence.

sorry - 70 year old finger on the rudder.
Good for the French. It's about time someone put a stop to this crap.
Yes, I live in a place where it gets cold and windy, and will put a scarf around my face to protect it. However, if I stop to talk to someone, or I enter a building, that scarf comes down. A seen face is an honest face, at least, and signals that you're not up to no good. This is true with most Canadians.
When someone refuses to uncover their face, what are we supposed to think? Especially when that covered face is in a place like a bank? Or the voting booths?
If they don't like the suspicion, they don't have to live here, simple as that.
The banning of the veil is just a 'pain reliever'. We need to be thinking more about finding answers in the long run.
Banning of the veil, at some point, will make Muslims come out as victims and I fear the counter-wave to that will give Islam more political power.
I have no answers and heard non, regarding to Islam growing in the West. France is a good example of the problem, with violent Muslim anti-West riots, and no way to stop it.
Exposure is crucial. But then what? Even if Islam will be somehow reformed, there will be those who will preserve the "old 'true' Islam". We are all aware of the problem, what do we do?
How do you de-legitimize a religion??
Muslims have learned to put a peaceful face in public, they have no problem lying.
This is the single, most dangerous threat, our civilization has ever faced!
People say 'we need to stand up to this'. Great, I'm in, what do I do?

Have a wonderful and peaceful 2010
Even if I am a little wary, I would be probably less ashamed to be a French citizen if the government finally ban this burqa in France.
Some French media become less "dhimmi" concerning Islamisation.
I was surprised to see an article about the Egyptian Kareem Amer in Le Monde ( a leftist newspaper).
Concerning the parliamentary inquiry, a politician received threats from a young Muslim.

Nevertheless, I wish you a Merry Christmas !
And Joyeux Noel to you, French Resistant!
Evidence of intelligent life in France.
Wouldn't it be nice if in the spirit of Christmas we could change the letters in the word VEIL a bit to make the word EVIL.
Yes we should honor the true Prince of Peace Jesus Christ by banning all EVIL.
Yep. It is time somebody banned the veil. And if Muslims don't like it, then kick them out. And will somebody ban the troll called peacemaker?
Banned, yet again.
I thought of something else to try. Fingers crossed.
Well, that's a good start!
The minaret/mosque ban should follow. Why do Muslims need a call to prayer? Don't they pray five times daily anyhow?
With 52 million mostly angry Muslims in Europe something has to give. Starting with minaret bans in Switzerland, then burkas in France. I think Europe should start placing a poll tax on Muslims. Agree that the government will protect them if they pay a tax..."the jizya in reverse", but if they step out of line they'll be shipped out of the country immediately.
I like what Europe is starting to do to slow this migration invasion of Islam down. They have to do something or it is doomed. Perhaps it's already too late.
"France's ruling party proposes ban on face veil" reads the news title. I take a double look. Am I dreaming? Then I read on. A smile creases my face. AT LAST! Thank Sarkozy! AT LAST!! A first step to neutralise the cancer of islam from at least one place in the West.
I wrote to my congrow man in Washington that we needed to action against dictorship in France by banning the French language in International talk and agreement, our dilpmat willnot speak or write in France even in French the French will have to learn how to speak english.
