Canadian town embarrassed that it sort of stood up against honor killing

From our No-Good-Deed-Goes-Unpunished comes this Toronto Star article, "Town puzzled by memorial to slain teen," about the memorial for honor killing victim Aqsa Parvez in Pelham, Ontario.

The memorial to Aqsa in Pelham is a textbook case of how political correctness and self-aggrandizement can ruin a good initiative. In the Toronto Star piece, Scott McLeod and everyone else backpedals furiously to make sure that no one gets the idea that their memorial has anything to do with Islam or Pamela Geller. In reality, she is the one who started it, in December 2008, as you can see here. She first published photos of Aqsa's unmarked grave, which McLeod just happened to see somewhere, on December 12, 2008. McLeod only entered the scene in February, in consultation with Pamela Geller. Nor is this a case of simple journalistic bias, for McLeod has been acting this way for many months.

If this had just been a case of someone taking credit for someone else's work, I wouldn't have said anything about it -- but when the one who is responsible is not only not credited, but demonized, it becomes important to speak out. For this same tactic hamstrings such efforts whenever they're attempted, and those who are defending human rights against Islamic supremacism and violence should not let it go unchallenged. We have to stop living in fear. If the people in Pelham wanted to memorialize Aqsa and the victims of honor killing, they should have done so wholeheartedly and without apology. Instead, they've put themselves in the position of doing something and apologizing for it at the same time, and furiously dissociating themselves from the one who started the whole thing.

We will win no battles, much less wars, that way.

Dear Mr. McLeod,

I am writing to you this morning because I am appalled at some remarks you made in today's Toronto Star piece about the Pelham memorial to Aqsa Parvez.

You kindly wrote to me some months ago to thank me for my role in the attempt to honor Aqsa's memory, and I responded by telling you that the initiative was entirely the brainchild of Pamela Geller. I provided some logistical assistance, but the idea to honor Aqsa and, by extension, all the victims of honor killing, and to show thereby that Western nations would not let this barbaric practice stand, was all Pamela's. You also indicated that you clearly knew that this was Pamela's initiative when you more recently gave her and me honorary firefighter status in Pelham.

The Toronto Star story, however, suggests that you saw "a haunting photo of her burial site" and decided that something must be done, and that "about the same time, Pamela Geller, author of the controversial U.S.-based AtlasShrugs.com blog, got involved and was later joined by Robert Spencer of the Jihad Watch blog."

I expect that this was no coincidence. I expect that you saw the photo of Aqsa's unmarked grave on the Atlas Shrugs site, and got involved in trying to further Pamela's efforts, rather than just coincidentally happening to start working on the same track she was at the same time.

But that's not the worst of it. The worst of it is that you threw her under the bus in the article, when you took a quite different tone in your earlier communication with me. The Star says that Pamela's blog "has an anti-Muslim tone." Instead of standing up and defending her site as a bastion of clear thinking and defense of the West against the horrors of Islamic supremacism that took Aqsa's life, you accepted the Star's tendentious characterization: "McLeod said he was aware of Geller's blog and its reputation but insists there was no political motive or anti-Muslim sentiment behind his decision to find a way to remember the Mississauga teen."

I am sure there wasn't any "anti-Muslim sentiment" behind your memorial -- as is evidenced by its silly, stupid, meaningless inscription, "Remembering new Canadians lost to the quest of integrating cultures."

Aqsa wasn't murdered by the "quest of integrating cultures." Aqsa wasn't "lost" to any such quest, the way an army would lose a soldier in battle or a construction crew would lose a worker who slipped through the scaffolding on a highrise. Aqsa was murdered by her father, who was acting upon deeply ingrained Islamic principles cheapening the lives of women and legitimizing the killing of children by their fathers. These principles are enshrined in Islamic law (and yes, I can give you chapter and verse.) It isn't "anti-Muslim" to stand against that. It is anti-human to dissemble and lie about it. It just enables honor killings to keep happening.

But my main point is not your weaselly inscription. My main point is that you distanced yourself from Pamela Geller -- not once but twice, as when you say later in the article: "We never took any of the money raised through the initial fundraising campaign organized by Geller." I know that to be true, but once again you had an opportunity to credit her with originating this initiative, and to defend her full-hearted commitment to women's rights and human rights, and to refute the hateful mischaracterizations of the Star.

But you didn't.

I was always uneasy about your effort, both because of the politically correct dissembling of the inscription and because of your earlier distancing yourself from Pamela and her work on this.

Without Pamela, you would not have your memorial in Pelham, and you know that. Without Pamela, it would not say "remembered and free," which you ripped off from the gravestone inscription Pamela devised for Aqsa, "Beloved, remembered, and free." I can give direct testimony to the fact that that tripartite inscription was Pamela's idea, as she said it in a phone conversation with me, and we agreed it would be perfect for Aqsa's gravestone.

It is not Pamela Geller who is the self-aggrandizing opportunist here. It is you. I hope that every time you pass that Aqsa memorial, you feel a sense of shame. In closing all I can say is that I hope you were misquoted and misrepresented. If so, you owe Pamela Geller a public clarification. If you were quoted accurately, you owe her a public apology. In either case, man up.

So-called "honor killings" are among the most heinous crimes I can imagine! The father or the brother killed the sister or mother!
Islam is probably the only religion in the world of such crimes encourages and justifies. That is why Islam = Fascism = NAZI

Bravo, Robert! ...and your appropriate defense of Pamela put a lump in my throat, as she is very fortunate to have a friend like you.

I'm certain I'm not alone when I feel somewhat depressed and totally inadequate at how little I've contributed in the fight of righteousness against evil when I see how much Ms. Geller and you have done Mr. Spencer.

Ms. Geller has a new banner at Atlas Shrugs and the only thing missing is the angelic halo.

Great stuff Robert! A man of integrity stands by his friends.

It's sad that honour killings even happen in my own country :-(

Dear Mr. Spencer,

In response to your letter today, I would like to clarify a few points.

1) I have never failed to give credit to either you or Pamela at Atlas Shrugs for initiating and driving this memorial forward, ‘ever’.

2) I was very much looking forward to both you and Pamela attending the dedication to meet with us and show that we share the same values on this and many other matters.

3) The memorial was to serve two purposes, the first to honor Aqsa Parvez, as the main point, but separately (and that’s why its on a different part) to identify all who have difficulty integrating.

4) I have no control on what is put into the newspaper, only what I say to reporters, as such I find myself trying to explain statements taken out of context and/or trivialized.

5) There is not very much in your posting/letter surrounding the rational or reasons surrounding the memorial which I disagree with.

6) One statement in your missive which I will absolutely disagree with however is the accusation of ‘weasel’ behavior in not identifying and giving credit. I am not articulate enough to try to manipulate anyone verbally in any manner, I tend to be straight to the point and say what I mean.

7) I invite you to arrange a meeting with me, or pick up the telephone and call me. I think you’ll find that I am honest in my intentions, and have always been. I am looking forward to sharing a coffee or a beer with you and discussing this matter.

In closing, I will state that I consider it an honor to have been involved with this project; I consider it a privilege to have had an opportunity to contribute to identifying and brining to light this horror ‘so called honor killing’.

Ouch. But he had it comin'.

It's sad that honour killings even happen in my own country :-(

Assuming the article is accurate Mr.McLeod's actions where absolutely shameful and completely self serving.

1.Refusing to recognize that Aqsa Parvez was killed because she was a Muslim,

2.Putting down Pamela Geller by saying you accepted no money from her in an effort to distance yourself from her and her website Atlas Shrugg.

3.Not willing to own up to the fact that there needs to be critical evaluation of the horrific Islamic practice of honor killings.

4.refusing to acknowledge Pamela Gellers website as the place you saw the photo

5.Saying it had nothing to with whether she was a Muslim or not when in fact it had everything to do with fact that she was Muslim--That is why she murdered Mr.Mcleod!

6.Wanted to show small town values by not making a political statement. Yep thats it, you certainly would not want to address the root causes as to why Aqsa Parvez was murdered.

Thats right Mr. small town fire chief Mcleod, you've had your 15 minutes of fabricated fame at the expense of people like Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer who are on the front lines of this effort every day.

So now you can go back to sleep in you quiet little town with its small town Canadian values.

Soooo..Who was the wuss who wrote the article? Sounds like an is slimy apologist. Some one who wants to stir up division in the camp.

I think the problem is that Miss Geller thinks Islam is evil, Muslims terrorists and Obama a secret Muslim.

It's sort of like the ten million offered by the Saudi after September 11th, you get the feeling he wasnt exactly on your side.

‘so called honor killing’.

OOPS

"Remembering new Canadians lost to the quest of integrating cultures."
...................

Of course, nothing could be further from the truth—Aqsa was not "lost" to "integrating cultures"—it is only *because* she was in a decent Western nation that anyone cared about her brutal murder in the first place.

It is only if you consider her reluctance to wear the hijab to be morally equivalent to her savage killing that the issue of "integrating cultures" emerges at all.

Dear Chief McLeod:

I heartily recommend that you make a due diligent effort to contact the reporter who wrote as well as quoted you in this article. He or she should allow for a follow on article that clarifies and extends your remarks regarding Aqsa Parvez's murder.

What is most important here above all is that Aqsa Parvez needs to be remembered as to why she was murdered in the first place. She needs to be rememebered as a symbol to what is wrong with many practices in fundamental Islam that does not reflect Western values. This is an ever increasing problem that the West must and needs to confront head on.

Do not let her death go away and be forgotten as just another murder Chief McLeod.

If you want to come an say that the court has suggested that you not reflect this at this time because it might taint the jury in a trial since the case has apparently not gone to court as of yet, this might be a reasonable and fair argument at this time, but I have not heard this as of yet.

Robert,

I applaud both you and Pamela for raising the issue and taking a stand. Its sad but not surprising that although this incident occurred in Canada, its Americans who are standing up and who truly have a grasp on meaning of the tragedy of an innocent girl's murder.

As I am sure you can judge by the tone of the Toronto Star article and your other postings on Mulsim issues in Canada, this country (particularly this city) is the most politically correct, Marxist cess pool in the world. We do have Ezra Levant and Kathy Shadlie but time and time again I rely on you to report on Muslim/Canadian issues.

Keep up the good work!

Have you thought about actually thinking a bit before responding? You might actually make your point and have someone take you seriously if you did. Or, is this just fill up the page time?

"Islam is evil"

How true!

Chief Mcleod's willingness to respond is laudable. Perhaps his comments WERE taken out of context...(Robert himself has been victimized by unscrupulous reporters working for mainstream publications). My hope is that this is a misunderstanding that can be cleared up.

That being said, the plaque on Parva's memorial was so lame....it's indefensible.

PS - The word "Islam" needn't have been included in the plaque, just something, ANYTHING, that actually defined the tragedy...

...such as: "There is no honor in honor killing"

Well I wish Robert would give chapter and verse on that. I for one could use the citation.

First let me say that the Toronto Star is not exactly the most right leaning newspaper in Canada. Big surprise there. I had an email exchange earlier this year with one of the columnists there who was whining about the treatment that a young Toronto 18 member was receiving from justice system. He was absolutely SURE that this guy was innocent!

I would think Chief McLeod should pick up the phone and talk to the person who wrote the column to clarify his point (s).

We all know how twisted things get with these liberal reporters. Don't be too hard on the guy, he did get the job done. We may not always like the reasons or the way things are done, but at least it got done.

First Mr. MacLeod's town was "puzzled by memorial to slain teen," and now his town "Remembers slain teen".

Mr. MacLeod is everything that is wrong with Canada. First an apologist to murderers and then damage control to save himself from looking like the complete wimp he is.

If Rifqa Bary was a Canadian, she would have suffered the same fate as the Kingston canal victims thanks to our neutered populous. Lucky for her, people like Pamela Geller exist and are American. Unfortuately Asqa was Canadian so therefore we will look for weasel words such as "marginalized", "disadvataged", "misunderstood", and "so called" to explain the actions of murderers.

signed,
ashamed Canadian

"is not exactly the most right leaning newspaper in Canada"

LOL

They don't call it the Red Star for nothing.

Reading through this thread, article, comments and all, what I was most intrigued by was speculating upon just how much Chief McLeod knows about Islam. Has he read at least parts of the Koran, the Hadith, the Sira? What about Sharia? Does he even know what these are? Irrespective of misattribution, miscommunication, misquoting, quoting incompletely, quoting out of context, etc., what is Chief McLeod's understanding of the Islamic faith? For in microcosm herein lies the fate of not only Canada, but all the West.

Qur'an 4:15 - As for those of your women who are guilty of lewdness, call to witness four of you against them. And if they testify (to the truth of the allegation) then confine them to the houses until death take them or (until) Allah appoint for them a way (through new legislation).

Geller takes no prisoners. Better that way.

It is certainly correct that the Toronto Star probably is the most left wing newspaper in Toronto maybe in all Canada. The Globe and Mail comes in a close second. The two conservative papers available in Toronto are the Toronto Sun and the National Post. The Post and the Globe are "national" papers in that they can be purchesed in the rest of the country while the Star and Sun are local although there are local "Sun" papers in other cities eg. Edmonton.
Sadly Canada is a much more left wing country than most Americans realize. It takes real courage to stand up for the right (pun intended) in Canada.
