Gamblers escape from Sharia

A dime game gets them a public caning, but they opt out. Sharia Alert from modern, moderate Indonesia: "Indonesian gambling convicts escape before caning," from The Associated Press, January 30:

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Three Indonesian men convicted of playing dominoes for money have escaped from jail moments before a public caning in devoutly Muslim Aceh province.

Local Islamic police chief Muhammad Rusli said Saturday the men bolted during an unguarded bathroom visit minutes before the punishment for violating anti-gambling laws.

The men were caught playing dominoes for 1,000 rupiah ($0.10) per game. They were to be caned six times each outside a mosque on Friday....

Can we go to the rest room?
Yes...
Are you going to guard us?
No...I trust you to come back for your lashes...
Thanks a lot...See you later...

LOL! An Islamic Keystone Cops moment. I love it!

The only purpose of public canings and punishments, especially for trivial "offenses," is to install terror and awe of those in power. It's a low-brow reinforcement of tyranny through intimidation.

Hmm - just thinking, from my above post:

"a low-brow reinforcement of tyranny through intimidation" sounds like a pretty good definition of Islam.

Do you think the women who will be sentenced to be *stoned to death* under Aceh's proposed law will be given unsupervised bathroom breaks before the sentence is carried out? No, I didn't think so.

Did anyone catch that last part? The men were going to receive their harsh punishment for penny-ante gambling *in front of a mosque on the Muslim "sabbath". What else could be more edifying for the faithful after a fiery Kutbah than to witness the draconian punishments that await anyone who steps out of line in Shari'ah ruled Aceh?

Don't you feel good about helping them after the tsunami?

It was four men,

One whipped, three escape corporal punishment

Under tight escort of sharia police officers, Syahrul bin Muhammad limped to a stage.

The man was not going to preach but was about to receive punishment in the form of public caning carried out in front of the Jami mosque in Jantho city, Aceh Besar regency, on Friday.

Syahrul was one of four suspects arrested for gambling - an offense punishable by caning - who were scheduled to be punished.

But he was unlucky. The three other suspects escaped the detention cell at the Jantho prosecutor's office, 15 minutes before they were to be caned.

The four were caught gambling in a coffee stall in the village on Dec. 28 last year. They were immediately taken to the public order and sharia police headquarters together with evidence in the form of Rp 100,000 (US$11) in cash and a pack of domino cards.

On Thursday, the Sharia Court sentenced each of them to six lashes of the cane.

Jantho Public Order and sharia police chief M. Rusli expressed regret that the three other suspects escaped.

"We placed them in the custody of the Jantho prosecutor's office, so they were the responsibility of the prosecutors. How did they escape? I believe it's just negligence on the part of the officers," Rusli said.

Rusli strongly denied allegations that officers at the detention center were bribed.

He blamed the escape purely on negligence on the part of the officers, saying that the three suspects escaped as they after making an excuse to go use the bathroom.

He said he learned of the escape 15 minutes before Friday prayers and that he had ordered his men to comb the city, but that their search had been unsuccessful.

He promised the three escaped suspects would still be punished if they were caught.

Sharia law, which was introduced to Aceh in 2003, already bans gambling, drinking alcohol and makes it compulsory for women to wear headscarves.

Dozens of public canings have been carried out by local sharia police against violators of Islamic law.

News of the escape raised suspicion among residents.

Resident Amri said the caning in Aceh was unfairly implemented since it only affected petty criminals like gamblers and drinkers.

"This is really unfair. Why do only the common people receive these punishments? When will those involved in corruption be whipped or have their hands chopped off?" he asked.

Serious violators, he said, could buy their way out.

"If this continues, when will sharia in Aceh be effectively and fairly implemented?" he asked.

Shiva, thanks for posting this.

Wait—Syahrul bin Muhammad was limping *before* he was caned? I don't know the whole situation, of course, but it sounds as though these men may have been beaten even before their public canings

Here's a critic:

So—the only real criticism this good Acehian citizen has is that there aren't enough floggings and amputations. After all, that is the true face of Islam.

I have it on very good authority that the upper class Arabs in Arabia run video game contests for thousands of dollars a throw at parties out in the desert.

Believe me when I tell you that nobody is getting caned for that.

Kill your daughter for being cheeky ... no problem.

Gamble a dime on a dominoes game ... public whipping.

This must be more of that high tone mohammedan morality we keep hearing about.

Muhammed Bear - "And the third lesson and tip actually comes from two of my favourite political philosophers Kenny Rogers and Mother Teresa, not often coupled with each other."

As Kenny Rogers said "You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away and know when to run."

They were probably also cheating when playing dominoes. You just can´t trust such people.

So, a Muslim police chief blames a Muslim Prosecutor's office and accuses his staff of negligence that allowed Muslims to escape.

I'm sure they would have been more careful to ensure non-Muslims received their lashings.

People used to accuse Freemasons in the police forces and judiciary of doing favours for fellow Masons. Now we seem to have reached a "get out of jail free card" for Muslims.

Ha ha! Muhammed Bear, you are much wiser than Anita Dunn. And I'll take sage advice from Kenny Rogers any day, especially if the alternative is Mao Tse-Tung.
