How Islam breathed new life into slavery and the slave trade in Europe

How Islam breathed new life into slavery and the slave trade in Europe
by John J. O'Neill

In my newly-published book, Holy Warriors: Islam and the Demise of Classical Civilization, I argue at length that a great majority of the things commonly regarded as "Medieval" were in fact introduced to Europe from Islam, and that it was Islam, and not the Huns, Vandals and Goths, which terminated Classical Civilization, the rational and humane civilization of Greece and Rome. This civilization survived in Europe and in North Africa and the Near East until the seventh century, at which point it was terminated by the Muslim conquests.

In point of fact, Islam's influence upon Europe was much greater than is commonly imagined, but that influence was entirely negative. Not only did the Muslims terminate Classical Civilization, but they dragged Europe, on many levels, down to a more barbarous level of culture. It was from the Muslims, for example, that Christian Europeans got the idea of "Holy War," a concept that would have been unthinkable in earlier centuries. And from Islam too, the institution of slavery, as well as the slave trade, received a new and powerful impetus.

Contrary to the beliefs of some modern anti-Christian writers, Christianity brought an immediate and dramatic improvement in the living conditions of slaves in the Roman Empire. It was also, eventually, instrumental in the abolition of the entire institution. The improvement was an inevitable consequence of the Christian notion that the mistreatment of any human being, whether slave or free, was gravely sinful. In the words of one writer, "The effect of the Church upon the Empire may be summed up in the word 'freedom'." (H. F. Stewart, "Thoughts and Ideas of the Period," in The Cambridge Medieval History: The Christian Empire, Vol. 1 (2nd ed. 1936), p. 592) And, "Close upon the Church's victory follows legislation more favorable to the slave than any that had gone before."(Ibid.) Whilst it is true that "Constantine did not attempt sudden or wholesale emancipation, which would have been unwise and impossible," he nevertheless immediately "sought to lessen his [the slave's] hardships by measures which with all their inequalities are unique in the statute-book of Rome. ... he forbade cruelty towards slaves in terms which are themselves an indictment of existing practice."(Ibid., p. 593) The Gospel passages of relevance here are too numerous to mention, but we should note in particular the story of the Final Judgment as told in Mark 25: 31-46, where the King (God) tells His servants: "So long as you did it to these, the least of my brethren, you did it to me." It should be remarked also, at this point, that the whole concept of human rights, attributed by many contemporary westerners to the thinkers of the Enlightenment, is rooted in this Gospel concept - a fact admitted by the Enlightenment philosophers themselves. Human rights are a moral as well as a judicial concept. If God will hold each of us accountable for our behavior towards the lowliest members of society, this places the latter on a par, in moral terms, with the highest members of society.

Thus from the start, the lives of slaves improved. This was especially the case with female and younger male slaves, whose function, in the past, was very often to provide sexual pleasure for their owners. This type of transgression was especially frowned upon by Christians. And so, whilst the owning of slaves was not, to begin with, illegal, mistreatment - from the very start - was. This view led, inexorably, to the abandonment and abolition of the entire slave system. We find therefore, from the earliest times, many Christian leaders, such as Gregory of Nyssa and John Chrysostom, condemning slavery itself and calling for better treatment for slaves. In fact, tradition describes Pope Clement I (92 - 99), Pope Pius I (roughly 158 - 167) and Pope Callixtus I (217 - 222) as former slaves.

After Christianity became the official religion of the Empire the more noxious manifestations of slavery, such as gladiatorial contests, were one by one abolished; and finally, with the Corpus of laws promulgated by Justinian, in the sixth century, we find a formal condemnation of the institution. The rationale was explained in the Institutiones, (Title III, Book 1, paragraph 2) where we read the following: "Slavery is an institution of the law of nations, against nature, subjecting one man to the dominion of another." Again, in Title II, Book 1, paragraph 2, it states "... the law of nations is common to the whole human race; for nations have settled certain things for themselves as occasion and the necessities of human life required. For instance, wars arose and then followed captivity and slavery, which are contrary to the law of nature; for by the law of nature all men from the beginning were born free."

The Justinianic code was introduced into Italy (in 554), from where it was to pass to Western Europe in the twelfth century and become the basis of much European law. It passed also to Eastern Europe where it appeared in Slavic editions, and became the cornerstone of Russian law.

The end result of all this was that by the tenth or even ninth century the Church had effectively ended slavery in Europe. And this is a fact well-known. In the words of Rodney Stark, "... slavery ended in medieval Europe only because the church extended its sacraments to all slaves and then managed to impose a ban on the enslavement of Christians (and Jews). Within the context of medieval Europe, that prohibition was effectively a rule of universal abolition." (Rodney Stark, The Victory of Reason (Random House, New York, 2005) p. 28)

The above statement is conservative. In fact, by the seventh century slavery was well on the way to disappearing throughout Europe; but then, at that point, new life was breathed into it, and the slave-trade experienced a massive revival. The revival was a direct result of the arrival of Islam.

Islamic custom and practice with regard to slavery was always diametrically opposed to that of Christianity: For whereas Christianity acted to emphasize the equality of all before God and to alleviate the conditions of slaves, whose bodies were certainly not open to the sexual exploitation which was frequently the fate of the slave in classical antiquity, Islam had no problem whatsoever with slavery. Indeed, the taking of comely captives seems to have been seen, from the very beginning, as a legitimate bonus owed to the warriors fighting to spread the faith. Thus for example after the slaughter of the male members of the Jewish tribe of Banu Quraiza Muhammad took one of the most beautiful female captives as a concubine; whilst other successful military exploits of the Prophet invariably involved his procuring of slaves. And this behavior is fully sanctioned, for later generations, by the authority of the Koran. Thus, we read, in Sura 23: 5-6: "...abstain from sex, except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess - for (in their case) they are free from blame." See also Sura 4:24.
In the words of Robert Spencer, "The Qur'an says that the followers of Muhammad are 'ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another' (48:29), and that the unbelievers are the 'worst of created beings' (98:6). One may exercise the Golden Rule [do unto others as you would have them do unto you] in relation to a fellow Muslim, but according to the laws of Islam, the same courtesy is not to be extended to unbelievers. That is one principal reason why the primary source of slaves in the Islamic world has been non-Muslims, whether Jews, Christians, Hindus, or pagans. Most slaves were non-Muslims who had been captured during jihad warfare." (Robert Spencer, Religion of Peace: Why Christianity is and Islam isn't (Regnery, 2008) p. 95).

The Muslim advance through the Middle East and North Africa meant the re-establishment, on a massive scale, of the slave trade, a trade which the Christian rulers of the late Roman Empire, particularly Justinian, had almost brought to an end. Historian Bat Ye'or says: "When Amr conquered Tripoli (Libya) in 643, he forced the Jewish and Christian Berbers to give their wives and children as slaves to the Arab army as part of their jizya. From 652 until its conquest in 1276, Nubia was forced to send an annual contingent of slaves to Cairo. Treaties concluded with the towns of Transoxiana [Iranian central Asia], Sijistan [eastern Iran], Armenia, and Fezzan (Maghreb) under the Umayyads and Abbasids stipulated an annual dispatch of slaves from both sexes. However, the main sources for the supply of slaves remained the regular raids on villages within the dar-al-harb [non-Islamic regions] and the military expeditions which swept more deeply into the infidel lands, emptying towns and provinces of their inhabitants." (Bat Ye'or, The Decline of Eastern Christianity under Islam: From Jihad to Dhimmitude (New Jersey, 1996) p. 108).

In Holy Warriors I describe in detail the devastating effect of Muslim raids at this time across the Mediterranean world. The latter sea became a war-zone, and normal trade came to an end. One type of trade alone survived: the trade in human bodies. And the devastation was not confined to southern Europe. The north of the continent became quickly involved in the general ruin: For that strange phenomenon, the Viking expansion, was intimately and directly related to the arrival of Islam. Hugh Trevor-Roper puts it thus: "What were these Vikings doing? What sudden force drove these piratical Northmen to range over the seas and rivers of Europe, creating havoc? It used to be supposed that it was merely a sudden, unexplained growth of population in Scandinavia which lay behind this extraordinary outburst. No doubt this was true: so vast an expansion cannot have been sustained by a static population. But the scope and direction of the raids point also to other motives. There were opportunities abroad as well as pressures at home; and these opportunities link together the Viking raids and the Moslem conquests." (Hugh Trevor-Roper, The Rise of Christian Europe (London, 1966) p. 90).

Trevor-Roper goes on to describe the vast wealth accumulated by the Muslim Caliphate in its expansion across Asia and Africa, and how, with this wealth, it could purchase what it wanted from Europe. What the Muslims wanted, above all, was "eunuchs and slaves." He continues: "It was one of the functions of the Vikings to supply these goods. Half traders, half pirates, they ranged over all northern Europe, and in their ranging, or through the method of piracy, they collected furs and kidnapped human beings. For preference they dealt in heathen Slavs, since Christian States had less compunction in handling a slave-trade in heathen bodies - they could always quote that useful text, Leviticus xxv, 44. So the Vikings fed both Byzantium and the rich new civilization of Islam with the goods which they demanded and for which they could pay. In doing so they penetrated all the coasts and rivers of Europe." (Ibid., pp. 90-1) In the above quotation Trevor-Roper repeats the erroneous notion, prevalent until the last decades of the twentieth century, that Byzantium somehow escaped the ravages of the Saracens and that in her territory there continued to flourish an intact and prosperous branch of ancient Rome. Constantinople, he imagines, like Damascus, was a wealthy recipient of Russian slaves. Yet by the end of the seventh century, as I show in great detail in Holy Warriors, the formerly great power of Eastern Rome was little more than an impoverished rump, cut off, just as surely as the West, from the wealth and learning of Asia. If there was a slave trade in Byzantium, it was only as a link in the chain that brought eunuchs and concubines from Russia to Damascus and Baghdad. What little gold Byzantium possessed in the tenth and eleventh centuries was from the taxes levied on Muslim merchants of human flesh, who frequented the Viking-supplied markets of the ancient capital. The gold derived from this infamous trade was known as aurum arabicum, Arab gold, or, as humane men preferred to call it, aurum infelix, unhappy gold. By the tenth century large quantities of this Arab gold and silver had found its way to Scandinavia. Viking longboats were apparently not infrequent visitors to Islamic ports in Iberia, and the occasional Arab traveler returned the compliment by visiting Scandinavia.

Whilst, as Trevor-Roper says, the majority of European slaves delivered to the Arabs were Slavs, not all of them were. Indeed, the Vikings plundered all of western Europe to supply the markets of the Caliphate. Dublin, for example, established by the Vikings in Ireland, was a major slave market, with most of the captives bought and sold coming from Ireland and Britain. Nonetheless, there is no doubt that the majority of slaves sold to the Muslims were heathen Slavs, and there is no doubt also that some of the Christian rulers of western Europe were complicit in the trade. Venice, for example, acted as a depot for the collection and sale of Slavic captives from Dalmatia. Marseilles too, it seems, also was active. In the words of Trevor-Roper: "For if the Vikings were the pioneers, the princes of Europe, or some of them, were the middlemen in the new slave-trade. They licensed it and they profited by it, though they left the direct traffic in it to the Jews, who could move most easily across the frontiers of the two societies. We have plenty of evidence of this trade and its routes ... Liutprand of Cremona, the ambassador of the West who, in the tenth century, stood agog before the kaleidoscope pageantry of the Byzantine court, tells us that it was the merchants of Verdun who, for the immense profit of the trade, made boys into eunuchs and sold them through Moorish Spain to the rich Moslem world ... The trade has left its mark in the languages of both Christendom and Islam. Sclavi, 'Slavs', has formed, in every European language, the word for slaves; and the same word, Sakaliba, has provided the Arabic word for eunuchs." (Ibid., p. 92)

By the late tenth and eleventh centuries Scandinavia was converted to Christianity, and the slave trade came to an end in the north of Europe. In the south, however, it was a very different story. For centuries, in Spain, in Sicily, in Greece, and all along the Mediterranean coastlands, Muslim corsairs raided incessantly, capturing entire communities and selling them in the slave markets of Cairo, Damascus and Baghdad. Even worse, the Christian populations of southern Europe, especially of Spain and southern Italy, began to take on many of the habits and customs of their Islamic foes. These included the keeping and marketing of slaves. It is little surprise then, that the great revival of slave-trading, which marked the European colonization of the Americas, would be driven by freebooters from the Iberian Peninsula. And we should never forget that, to begin with, the Atlantic slave trade with the Americas was entirely a Spanish and Portuguese enterprise. The nations of northern Europe did not participate. Famously, Queen Elizabeth I of England initially refused to become involved, declaring the trade an outrage against God and humanity. Later however, probably corrupted by the example of the Spaniards and Portuguese, she changed tack and began Britain's involvement in the noxious trade.

Louis Betrand is scathing of the influence exerted upon Christian Spain by Islam. "The worst characteristic which the Spaniards acquired was the parasitism of the Arabs and the nomad Africans: the custom of living off one's neighbour's territory, the raid raised to the level of an institution, marauding and brigandage recognized as the sole means of existence for the man-at-arms. In the same way they went to win their bread in Moorish territory, so the Spaniards later went to win gold and territory in Mexico and Peru.
"They were to introduce there, too, the barbarous, summary practices of the Arabs: putting everything to fire and sword, cutting down fruit-trees, razing crops, devastating whole districts to starve out the enemy and bring them to terms; making slaves everywhere, condemning the population of the conquered countries to forced labour. All these detestable ways the conquistadores learnt from the Arabs.

"For several centuries slavery maintained itself in Christian Spain, as in the Islamic lands. Very certainly, also, it was to the Arabs that the Spaniards owed the intransigence of their fanaticism, the pretension to be, if not the chosen of God, at least the most Catholic nation of Christendom. Philip II, like Abd er Rahman or El Mansour, was Defender of the Faith.

"Finally, it was not without contagion that the Spaniards lived for centuries in contact with a race of men who crucified their enemies and gloried in piling up thousands of severed heads by way of trophies. The cruelty of the Arabs and the Berbers also founded a school in the Peninsula. The ferocity of the emirs and the caliphs who killed their brothers or their sons with their own hands was to be handed on to Pedro the Cruel and Henry of Trastamare, those stranglers under canvas, no better than common assassins." (Louis Betrand and Sir Charles Petrie, The History of Spain (2nd ed. London, 1945), p. 160).

Money quote - "the parasitism of the Arabs..."

Islam breathes life into evil and destruction.
Islam breathes death into goodness and construction.

Slavery, sex slavery, .... - Multicultural PC leftists believe this is OK because all cultures are equal and hey, "Who are we to judge?"

I argue at length that a great majority of the things commonly regarded as "Medieval" were in fact introduced to Europe from Islam.

This is the most important occlusion in Western historiography. One wonders whether the subject was dropped out of shame, fear, or just plain forgetfulness induced by the Medieval era.

Whatever the case, this gaping hole in our collective consciousness will lead to large scale disaster. Not only is it our biggest hole, it's the most dangerous hole.

At least we're capable of shame.

I believe too, that it was Islam that influenced the cruelty of the Spanish Inquisition and converted Vlad Tepes, into "the Impaler". It was anti-Christian of them to commit such acts of barbarism otherwise. The Muslims had occupied Spain and Vlad had lived with the Ottomans in his youth after he and his younger brother were given to the Ottomans Sulaiman as a gesture just to keep the Turks out of his country.
Seeing what inhumane practices the Muslims committed made the Inquisitors, and Vlad alike, immune to bloodshed and torture just as it corrupts Muslim youth today. Islam did and continues to use ideological indoctrination of death and punishment. It's cruel and merciless. How ironic that they use the phrase "Allah, most merciful and forgiving".
Rubbish!

Well, you've gotta admit there's a certain rich irony in islam being the source of Vlad's brutality, considering what he did to the invading Ottomans.

You must be joking. European Christians engaged in slavery, colonialism and all sorts of other unjust behavior for hundreds of years in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia, but it was the Muslims who made them do it; they really didn't want to, they were somehow forced to.

By the way, I have read some of the papal pronouncements of the time condemning Christian activity complicit in unjust slavery, and have never noticed any of them blaming Muslims for Christian misconduct. Can anybody furnish some actual examples of that here?

By the way, we serious Catholics are largely proud of much of the inquisitions that were carried out in the past; don't give credit to Muslims for our rightful accomplishments!

Let's see what Thomas Madden wrote in Crisis magazine about this:

"One of the most enduring myths of the Inquisition is that it was a tool of oppression imposed on unwilling Europeans by a power-hungry Church. Nothing could be more wrong. In truth, the Inquisition brought order, justice, and compassion to combat rampant secular and popular persecutions of heretics."

And then there's this:

"For medieval people, religion was not something one just did at church. It was their science, their philosophy, their politics, their identity, and their hope for salvation. It was not a personal preference but an abiding and universal truth."

And, really, that's the way it should be.

Sounds like a Total Belief System to me, Mr. Fitzgerald.

fairuz,

why are you thicker than a brick?

O'Neill seems to concentrate on a few nasty habits of the Moslems -- such as slavery, and excessive brutality in war -- that Europe copied from Islam. He implies that these were major ingredients of medieval European civilization. Yet slavery was scarcely an important institution within medieval Europe -- serfdom, yes, but not slavery. It was peripheral, and declined in proportion as Christianity advanced into pagan areas such as the Balkans, Scandinavia, and the Baltic.
For a more comprehensive view of the effect of Islam on Europe, see the works of Henri Pirenne (1862-1935). Pirenne's succinct formula was "Without Mohammed, no Charlemagne". In other words, it was the rise of Islam, particularly its conquests of the Levant and North Africa, that created a break between the civilization of late antiquity and the medieval world. Up through the 600's, the Mediterranean continued to be the center of Western civilization, and large-scale trade and intellectual contacts continued between eastern and western parts of that sea. With the control of the Mediterranean passing into Moslem hands, that contact was broken. Western Europe was thrown back entirely on to its own resources, and its center of gravity shifted northward, to the North and Baltic Seas. Without this break, Western Europe would have continued as the hinterland of Constantinople, and never developed its distinctive characteristics.

Sounds like a Total Belief System to me, Mr. Fitzgerald.

Even if Thomas Madden's conclusions are right, two things are unaccounted for:

1) Everybody in the world is aware of slavery practiced by the Christians; almost nobody is aware of the same from Moslems.

2) Christians no longer practice slavery; Moslems still practice slavery.

*** Bukhari Vol 6 Bk 60 Nbr 662 ***

If JudeoChristianity is a Total Belief System along the lines of the Islam megacult, why do so few JudeoChristians follow its dictates nowadays?

I've got to read that book, Holy Warriors: Islam and the Demise of Classical Civilization!

Sheikh Yermami, why are you even thicker than a brick and fairuz combined? Jews have always been active in slave trade. Verify the information below
----------------------------------------------------------

You can verify the information below with the official copies of slave records found at Oxford, Harvard and you can verify all of this with my colleagues at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem:

For decades, the White people of America have been subjected to a continual barrage from Blacks and others that Europeans are somehow "responsible" for the African slave trade and that we need to "atone" for our "guilt." There are a number of flaws with the idea that we are somehow "responsible" for the African slave trade.

First, few White people even owned slaves--slavery was a rich man's pursuit, and slavery did not exist amongst the middle and working classes of White people.

Second, even if every European in America had an ancestor who owned slaves (which is an extremely unlikely proposition), it makes little sense to blame the children for the supposed sins of their fathers.

Third, Blacks sold their own kind into slavery, are least to blame for slavery as are Whites, but hold part of the blame. Few Africans helped sell their own into slavery after trade started and they realized that, unlike the indentured type of slavery that tribes were participating at the time, the slave ships were never coming back. They also soon found that they were not getting paid regularily and the Ship owners were rarely keeping their end of the bargain.

Fourth, European Whites did not bring the slaves to America. On the contrary, it was Jews who brought them here.

Below is a listing of the initial group of Jewish slave ships and the Jewish owners of them. This is a partial list that shows only the beginning of the slave trade to North America and only includes 5% of the actual Jewish slave trade.

It is well known that the largest slave plantations in the South were all owned by our people.

According to one survey noted by Jewish scholars Lee Soltow and Ira Rosenwaike, 75% of Jewish households surveyed in the American South owned slaves, more than double the average 36% for all southern households. [ROSENWAIKE, in SEC. LIFE, p. 180] And Jews, as we will continue to witness, have always been "disproportionately" represented in virtually any field where there is serious money to be made. (In Port Royal, Jamaica, in 1680, about 16% of Jewish households had no slaves; in the non-Jewish community, this figure was over 47%. Likewise 73.7 % of Jewish households had between one and four slaves; in the non-Jewish community the figure was 41.8 %.) [SCHORSCH, J., 2000]

Jewish mythology claims a long history of moral superiority over others, and innocence. The original Ku Klux Klan (1865-1876), however, was not hostile to Jews and even had Jewish members, including Simon Baruch, the father of the Quarter-Master General of the Confederate Army. (The father of Bernard Baruch, the Chairman of the War Industries Board under President Woodrow Wilson in World War I, was a member of the Ku Klux Klan). [COIT, M., 1957, p. 12-13] The Secretary of State of the Confederacy (initially its Secretary of War) was also of Jewish birth, Judah P. Benjamin. [RUBINSTEIN, p. 20] After the war Benjamin fled to England. David de Leon was the first Surgeon General of the Confederacy. [GOLDBERG, M. H., 1976, p. 172] Other prominent Confederate Jews included Edwin Moise, Speaker of the Louisiana House; Raphael Moses who "was influential in leading Georgia out of the Union;" Henry Hyans, the Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana leading up to the Civil War; and Edwin de Leon, "whom Benjamin sent to Paris to handle public relations and propaganda for the South." "The prominent role of Jews in the Confederacy," notes Nathaniel Weyl, "is generally either ignored or condensed into shamefaced footnotes by those historians of American Jewry whose opinions conform to the liberal-leftist stereotype." [WEYL, N., 1968, p. 54]

Albert Lindemann notes the typical case of prominent Jewish historian Oscar Handlin's volume Three Hundred Years of Jewish Life in America: "[Handlin] ignored the issue [of slavery in his volume] ... even while mentioning by name the 'great Jewish merchants' who made their fortunes in the slave trade." [LINDEMANN, p. xx]

It is clear that the issue of Jewish influence in the African-slave trade in many parts of the world was significant. And this is the value of the NOI book (along with, perhaps, the idea that Jews are not, as so often depicted in the popular media, necessarily the "best friend" of the Black man). How much significant the slave trade was Jewish-inspired can only be a matter of endless disputation. Considerably less than one percent of North America's population were Jews and it's hard to imagine that, by numbers alone, 18th and early 19th century Jewry could have possibly controlled the huge slave market in this area. (As late as 1817, there were only 3,000 Jews in all of America. [ROSENWAIKE, p. 13] ) Nonetheless, in considering the evidence -- Jewish and otherwise, it is clear that Jews were very much disproportionately involved in, and important to, the trade in human chattel. In some colonial posts they were no doubt preeminent in the business. The largest Jewish exploitation of slaves seems to have been in Barbados, Brazil "In the first half of the seventeenth century," notes Abram Leon, "all the great sugar plantations in Brazil were in the hands of Jews." [LEON, p. 176], Curacao, Jamaica, and Surinam (Dutch Guinea). Jewish historian Arnold Wiznitzer adds that "Jews dominated the slave trade" in Dutch Brazil. [SCHORSCH, J., 2000]

Historian David Brion Davis notes that in the Jewish-founded town of Joden Savanne in Surinam, they "extracted labor from African slaves in one of the most deadly and oppressive environments in the New World." [MAGIDA, p. 184]

In our own time, as throughout history, Orthodox male Jews still must daily thank God for not being born Gentile, as well not being born a woman. Such ritual thanks branch out into other areas as well.

"One specific mitzvah [religious commandment] required of traditional Jews each day," says Arthur Kurzweil, "is [a reminder] that we were slaves in Egypt. This mitzvah is not performed with a ritual object, nor is it an act that would cause some to think you looked religious. Merely reflecting in your mind and hearing that we were slaves is, in itself, considered a spiritual act of great significance." [KURZWEIL, p. xxii] Jewish victimhood tradition ritually underscores their roles as slaves thousands of years ago. In Orthodox households, says Evelyn Kaye, "bitter herbs [are dipped] in salt water at Passover to remind [Jews] of the tears of the slaves in Egypt." [KAYE, p. 45]

The traditional daily reminder of slavery and the supposed fact that thousands of years ago Jews were held in bondage is all the more peculiar when one tries to imagine what thoughts went through the minds of the many Jewish slave traders throughout history, merchants who were instrumental even in the slave trading of Europeans. These are the words of James Parkes, a respected philosemitic scholar, extremely sympathetic to Jews in his many volumes about their history:

"In the period from the fifth to eight centuries [Jews] gradually took the place previously occupied by the Syrians as'international' traders; and they continued, and perhaps, developed, the trade in slaves." [PARKES, p. 17] "While the Jews were... never... the only traders, it is possible that the slave trade through north-eastern Europe to the Slav countries and the land trades to the East were for practical purposes Jewish monopolies. " [PARKES, p. 25] "It would appear that Jews had little difficulty in obtaining slaves in the eastern provinces of the empire and Poland, in spite of the protection which acceptance of Christianity in those regions should have given the inhabitants. References to this traffic inChristian slaves are not infrequent. [PARKES, p. 45]

"The evidence is thus enough to show that the Church possessed a genuine grievance against the section of the Jewish population involved in the slave trade. But the misdeeds ofslave traders did not cease at the purchase of Christians in eastern Europe. Agobard quotes cases -- and there is no reason to refute his evidence -- of the theft of children in France for sale to the Moors of Spain; and a chronicler of the middle of
the tenth century brings an even more unpleasant story of the castration of boys in eastern France for their sale as eunuchs to the Moorish harems, a trade which was, apparently, extremely profitable." [PARKES, p. 46]

"In the tenth century," notes Jewish (and Zionist) author Julius Brutzkus, "the Jews possessed salt mines near Nuremberg. They also traded in arms, and exploited the treasuries of the churches. But their great specialty ... was their trade in slaves." [LEON, p. 124] "The first Jews that Poles encountered," states the Encyclopedia Judaica, "must certainly have been traders, probably slave traders, of the type called in the 12th-century Jewish sources holekhei rusyah (travelers to Russia). [EN JUD, v. 13, p. 710] "In the tenth century," notes Israel Abrahams, "the Spanish Jews often owed their wealth to their trade in slaves." [ABRAHAMS, p. 98]

Jews, says Lewis Browne, "traveled everywhere from England to India, from Bohemia to Egypt. Their commonest merchandise in those days, beginning with the eighth century, was slaves. On every high road and on every great river and sea, these Jewish traders were to be found with their gangs of shackled prisoners in convoy." Such disturbing facts that impugn the Jewish myths of perpetual victimhood must of course be apologized away. "Slave trading," says Browne, a Jewish scholar, "seems irredeemably vile and hateful to us today, but we must remember here again the standards have changed ...And in light of the customs of those times, the slave-traffickers were actually doing almost a moral act. They alone were keeping the conquering armies from slaughtering every one of their defeated foes after each battle." [WILLIAMS, J., p. 230]

Jewish apologists of course further argue that Jews were involved in the trade of European slaves (the English word "slave" is reputed to come from "Slav") because "they were forced into it" by others, they were only "doing the dirty work for Christians," it was a norm of the era, or that extensive Jewish slave trading was a "Christian ecclesiastical myth." Another Jewish apologist justifies the Jewish slave trade of Europeans during the era of Pope Gregory this way:

"Had the Jews been prevented from owning slaves it is likely that they would have given up the slave trade and had they done this the labor shortage that would have been created might have caused an inestimable loss of life through sheer starvation."
[ABEL, p. 197]

"Slave traders were proverbially dishonest." [BARON, p. 193] And there were many legal hurdles that Jewish slave traders had to face, both from Christian authorities (who grew increasingly outraged by Jews owning Christian slaves), and their own rabbinical authorities when faced with the necessity of slaves' castration, for instance, to be eunuchs. Jewish religious texts forbade mutilation. This problem was easily resolved by resorting to a technicality; prospective Jewish slave owners merely hired non-Jews to do the operation before they formally bought them. [BARON, p. 191] Jewish writers in Spain complained more frequently than other places about the ethics of having slave concubines in Jewish households. [BARON, p. 194]

"Not a single Jew," notes Stephen Isaacs, "has been identified among the abolitionists in Charleston, South Carolina, which had been home to the largest Jewish community in the United States at one time." [ISAACS, p. 180] "[The Jew] somehow feels that in the Great Democracy he is 'the other' Negro -- a white-skinned one," wrote Isaac Deutcher in 1968, "And how very often he gets his own back on the black Negro: in the Southern States more often than not it is the Jew who is one of the most fanatical upholders of white supremacy." [DEUTCHER, ., 1968, p. 43]

Rabbi Isaac Mayer Wise, a champion of liberal Reform Judaism and "the most active and renowned rabbi in the United States" in the nineteenth century [SACHAR, p. 196], actively supported the enslavement of Blacks, called Abraham Lincoln an "imbecile," and argued that Blacks were "beasts of burden." [LINDEMANN, p. 210] Other of his words were later engraved on a memorial tablet in the Memorial Hall of Temple Emanu-El, the great Reform Judaism synagogue in New York City:

"American Judaism. A religion without mystics or miracles. Rational and self-evident, eminently human, universal, liberal and progressive. In
perfect harmony with modern science, criticism, and philosophy and in full sympathy with universal liberty, justice and charity. There are no better American citizens than the Jews and no religion better befitting a free people than Judaism." [GOLDSTEIN, D. p. 68]

Jonathan Kaufman notes the case of another very prominent New York Jewish rabbi in 1861:

"Rabbi Morris Jacob Raphall ... brought the full force of Jewish
learning to a defense of slavery, preaching a lengthy sermon that
defended its biblical roots and noting that 'Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
Job -- the men with whom the Almighty conversed, with whose
names he emphatically connects to his own most holy name ...
all these men were slaveholders.' Raphall was no fringe figure. He
was one of the most prominent rabbis of his day; the year before
he had been chosen to be the first Jew to open a session of the
House of Representatives with a prayer." [KAUFMAN, J., 1988,
p. 22]

Modern scholar Judah Rosenthal notes rabbi Raphall's effect on the slavery debate in America:

"Rabbi [Morris] Raphall delivered a sermon entitled 'The Bible View
of Slavery.' Raphall attempted to prove 'that according to the Talmud
there is no difference between a lost ox, donkey, or slave, and that
the Talmud recommends turning over a fugitive slave to its master.
The discourse of Rabbi Raphall which appeared in print caused a
public stir. It was reprinted many times in the pro-slavery press.
It produced a sensational effect coming from a popular rabbi who
had the reputation of being a biblical scholar ... Raphall was right
in his Biblical exegesis." [ROSENTHAL, J., 78]

In 1896 an editorial in the Jewish South of Richmond, Virginia, argued that "Negroes are intellectually, morally, and physically an inferior race -- a fact none can deny, " [LINDEMANN, p. 225] and with the death of a particularly racist Jewish senator from Maryland, Isador Rayner, a Black journalist wrote that Rayner "invoked upon his colored neighbors the terrors of (a pogrom)." [LINDEMANN, p. 233]

He is now writing Judaism in America for the Contemporary American Series of Columbia University Press. Visit him at the website of his synagoge, Bet Aviv, in Columbia, Maryland.

The following passages are from Dr. Raphael's book Jews and Judaism in the United States a Documentary History (New York: Behrman House, Inc., Pub, 1983), pp. 14, 23-25.

"Jews also took an active part in the Dutch colonial slave trade; indeed, the bylaws of the Recife and Mauricia congregations (1648) included an imposta (Jewish tax) of five soldos for each Negro slave a Brazilian Jew purchased from the West Indies Company. Slave auctions were postponed if they fell on a Jewish holiday. In Curacao in the seventeenth century, as well as in the British colonies of Barbados and Jamaica in the eighteenth century, Jewish merchants played a major role in the slave trade. In fact, in all the American colonies, whether French (Martinique), British, or Dutch, Jewish merchants frequently dominated.

"This was no less true on the North American mainland, where during the eighteenth century Jews participated in the 'triangular trade' that brought slaves from Africa to the West Indies and there exchanged them for molasses, which in turn was taken to New England and converted into rum for sale in Africa. Isaac Da Costa of Charleston in the 1750's, David Franks of Philadelphia in the 1760's, and Aaron Lopez of Newport in the late 1760's and early 1770's dominated Jewish slave trading on the American continent."

Dr. Raphael discusses the central role of the Jews in the New World commerce and the African slave trade (pp. 23-25):

SEVENTEENTH AND EIGHTEENTH CENTURIES
JEWISH INTER ISLAND TRADE: CURACAO, 1656

AL-KIDYA: Yes, you are correct. All was done then, as in the European pre-emptive strikes against warrior cultist muslims between the 900 to 1200 in the area known now as Israel, Palestine,Lebanon and Syria- known as the Crusades to grudge carrying Muslims. Muslims were upset at the armed strikes because they were unable to practice their inhuman and arbitrary form of rule known as law called SHARIA. Europeans, Mongols under Ghenghis Khan, and those mentioned above had a little more respect for God's most beloved creation, humans. Sometimes, when a bloodthirsty race of cultists who are obssessed with sex and control do not get the message the first hundred times, extreme violent action may have to be taken against such inhuman beasts.
By the way, Musims see the world only through muslims eyes, that is all governments are based on some religion. This is true only to muslims. Judaism, Hindusim, Buddhism, Chritianity all recognize that from time to time manmade rule may conflict with religion and the light, truth and way of God and his son Jesus.
By the way, how is it that muslims know Jesus performed miracles, saved thousands of lives and did good deeds for humans-God's most beloved creation- without regard to their color or religion in the name of his Father, but Muhammed, who killed, raped, married children, stole, lusted and slaughtered thousands and command all those who follow him to slaughter humans- God's most beloved creation- gets the credit for being God's true prophet. This is why most of us believe that islam is missing something- like a soul.

OK!! There were just about always slaves. I think Abraham had slaves. The Jews were slaves to the Pharoah of Egypt. Jesus mentioned slaves too. And on and on it goes.

Indentured servants of the 17th and 18th centuries in Colonial America were slaves of a sort. I had an ancestor who was one in 1675 Virginia FOR 7 YEARS. He had to sue his "master" to get his "earned" freedom and then became the Sheriff of the county.

I also had several slave holder ancestors. One of them owned over 400 slaves and had a huge plantation! I have found that 10 of my ancestors( including 2 women) owned slaves and nobody had less than 100.

The thing is that in the WEST now it is outlawed. HOWEVER, all over the world "modern day" moslems think it is AOK to get slaves, sell slaves and use slaves. And they also torture, beat and kill them too.

Your attack of Jewish slavers is sort of odd since in the society of the colonial era, Christian believers were slavers too. You single them out as if it would be unusal for 17th and 18th century people to deal in slaves. It was big business then and certainly AOK within the laws of the day.

Christian colonists BOUGHT and used the slaves. No customers, no market.

Hey there is plenty of guilt by those folks back then to go around.

But like I said IT IS NOW that we see a continuing slavery used BY MOSLEMS!!

We in the West have evolved to a higher MORAL code in regard to slavery..IT IS AGAINST THE LAWS!!

See there was this GREAT Big old war called the Civil War put an end to the odious practice of slavery in the USA. You know hundreds of thousands of Americans died to end slavery in the USA!!!! "LET US FIGHT TO SET MEN FREE"!!

Many Americans died while fighting to free all Europe from the nazis. Americans died while setting other groups of slaves free from nazi death camps.Jews were freed from one death camp by Black American soldiers... the descendants of slaves themselves.

Did you see the movie "AMAZING GRACE"??? If not do so!!

"AMAZING GRACE...I ONCE WAS BLIND BUT NOW I SEE!"

"Twas GRACE THAT SET ME FREE"

That Grace is the GRACE OF CHRIST.

I pity ALL those who follow the false prophet mohammed...that evil forerunner of the anti-christ.

Islam by its very name infers a grave slavery TO ITS OWN ADHERANTS. They have no blessings of GRACE under the oppressive thumb of mohammed!!!

Excellent article!! Thank you for the link!

"It should be remarked also, at this point, that the whole concept of human rights, attributed by many contemporary westerners to the thinkers of the Enlightenment, is rooted in this Gospel concept - a fact admitted by the Enlightenment philosophers themselves. Human rights are a moral as well as a judicial concept."

This is a concept completely lost on the Islamists, that our *secular laws* and human rights are founded on the basic premises of our Christian heritage, where 'freedom' was a foundational concept. They parade their Sharia laws as if morally superior to our secular laws, but they have no understanding that their retro laws supporting in principle *slavery* are in fact a giant step backwards for civilization, not progressive. Mohammad's Koran of Allah was NOT a progressive revelation.

I agree in principle with the author that it was not barbarians, Huns, Vandals, Goths, that brought down Classical civilization, though they did their part. Rather it was largely the 'barbarian' Islamics who made travel and trade in the Classical world impossible. Order in society collapsed for hundreds of years in what was Europe's 'Dark Ages' until the Renaissance. Slavery was ultimately abolished in Europe, but never fully abolished in Islamia. Even today supporters of Sharia will boldly shout "Freedom can go to hell!" to make their point.

The legacy of Islam is slavery and destruction, and retro regression of civilized society. We must learn from history if we are to not repeat it, especially in modern Europe. "Islam can go to hell" should be the next slogan for Europe and the civilized world.

The moslems do have a soul it is just gone over to the "dark side". They blindly follow one, dirty nasty MAN called muhammed who was under the power of a fallen angel called lucifer.

AtheistExJew,

I'm rather surprised to be perfectly honest. I've had a growing awareness for a number of years now of the various forms of Jewish misconduct that tend to get sanitized and concealed, as one who grew up in the Jewish community and was subject to various forms of slanted presentations of facts.

But this one, the slave trade and slave holding, honestly, I had never heard of before.

Looks like I've got some more digging to do now. I've saved off your post here for future reference when I get the chance to try to research this some more. Any other information or sources you can recommend on this subject would be welcome.

Thanks.

You must have never heard of billionaire George Soros. He was a Jew who assisted nazis in Hungary and now assists zero-bama in his actions against Israel.

Just as there were MANY so-called Christians involved the slave trade, there are so-called Jews involved as well.

Although that name 'Roosevelt' on the list of slavers is the family name of some French Huguenots( Protestants) from Nantes, France.

I suggest that NOT a single GOD FEARING JEW or CHRISTIAN is NOW, in this present MODERN WORLD involved in enslaving ANY person.

However, I can personally guarantee you that there are hundreds of thousands, IF NOT MILLIONS of SHARIA FOLLOWING and OBSERVIANT MOSLEMS enslaving MANY POOR PEOPLE AROUND THE GLOBE!!!

Talk to some Christian "boys from the Sudan" who are refugees from moslem terror who now live in the USA. You can really learn something there.

Fairuzfan provides a plethora of easy opportunities to argue against and all you can dish up is an abusive and ad hominen remark?

You really are a bully.

fairuzfan - Allah is all powerful and all knowing - Allah MADE us do it!

"You must be joking. European Christians engaged in slavery, colonialism and all sorts of other unjust behavior for hundreds of years in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia, but it was the Muslims who made them do it; they really didn't want to, they were somehow forced to."

You might try reading the article again. The point was that Islam revived practices that had fallen out of favor up to the Seventh Century. Also, that the Spaniards and Portuguese were greatly influenced(negatively)by Islam in how they dealt with colonial possessions. They followed the practices of their former masters who had conquered the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Europe.

As for Thomas Madden, you might try giving the dates and pages of the publications you cite, unless you are trying to cover up your source?

Here is something that is fully cited and unrazored by Thomas F. Madden on the Inquisition: http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/madden200406181026.asp

Nothing like getting the whole thing, rather than something partially covered by Islamic sand.

Fascinating.

However knowing the way what we now call the working class in Europe was treated over the centuries one understands that slavery is relative.

People are not aware that humane, yes humane planters in the British West Indies in the 17th century pressed for the introduction of slavery as a progressive way of working the plantations. Initially the plantations were worked by British convicts who were given to the planters for nothing and consequently treated quite brutally. The argument was that if they had to buy black slaves it would cost them money and they would look after them better. I don't believe it worked out like that in practice, but that was the original idea.

Nevertheless the effect of islam on European development was very negative. As you are probably aware the growth of the aristocratic system grew out of the need to resist Muslim invasions in the 8th century. The Kings of what we now call France realised that the most effective weapon to resist muslim armies was heavily armored mounted warriors. As these required the most advanced technology of the day they were very expensive so each warrior (Knight) was given an estate and serfs to support him. The Serfs were his absolute property and could not under any circumstances leave. In practice not a lot different from slavery but in least he did protect them.

It is no accident that the most extreme form of Christianity grew up in Spain which fought a 700 year war against islam. The laws of physics? Every action will produce an equal and opposite reaction.

fairuzfun.

"You must be joking. European Christians engaged in slavery, colonialism and all sorts of other unjust behavior for hundreds of years in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia, but it was the Muslims who made them do it; they really didn't want to, they were somehow forced to."

Sorry but Colonialism did not get under way until Africa was carved up at the Berlin conference in the 1880's and was mostly gone by the 1960's. As one example the man who lead Kenya to independence was 2 years old when the British moved in and became President of the country 60 years later.

Yes the Portuguese were there for about 400 years but they had more real estate than the could manage and never got much past the coast.

You could of course cite the French in North Africa but that was a frontier war as much as anything and freed Europe from raids by muslim pirates for the first time in a 1000 years. True the US Marines did give the pirates a beating in about 1800 but I think the muslims took their last ship in the English channel in about 1820.

One really needs to check the refernces given by Islamists, especially those with a strong anti-Semetic tinge. You will often find razored quotes, misquotes, non-existent quotes, and authorities that are questionable(Marxist, Islam sympathizers, and the very obscure sectarian.)

I appreciate the detail and plainspeak of this essay, but I'm a bit concerned about what appears to be going overboard a bit on a few points. There's no need to overstate the case, which is, I think, a fair description of the following passage:

The worst characteristic which the Spaniards acquired was the parasitism of the Arabs and the nomad Africans: the custom of living off one's neighbour's territory, the raid raised to the level of an institution...making slaves everywhere, condemning the population of the conquered countries to forced labour. All these detestable ways the conquistadores learnt from the Arabs.

Overstatement weakens the point.

It is probably true (I hope to read the book soon to hear the full case) that the Spaniards and other europeans learned from and adopted the practices of the marauding Jihadists. But we must be honest enough to concede that these practices were not invented by muslims and not unique to Islam. Brought to a level unique in history, perhaps, and revived in a continent that showed signs of moving away from them, by Islamic influence, no doubt. But it is pure hyperbole to suggest that Islam is solely responsible for these things, or that the poor Spaniards had no choice but to adopt them.

I hold that every man is culpable for his own choices, regardless of influences upon him. Had a rough childhood? Too bad, you've got my sympathy, but it doesn't excuse you for beating your wife. Similarly, the spaniards suffered under and learned barbaric ways from the conquering Berbers, but this does not excuse them from behaving the same way. If anything the underlying Christian culture ought to have given them knowledge an alternative path. There is nothing unique about the Spanish in this respect. The British, the Dutch and so on had plenty of blood on their hands during the intervening centuries. Perhaps much of it can be traced to Islamic influence and can be pitched as a response to the jihad. I've no doubt that at least some of it can. But this does not absolve these folks from guilt.

I hope that in the current struggle we can raise a response that is at a higher level than the evil which we oppose -- the Islamic, Islamist, Jihadist influence that would tug our world into a new barbarism. What we should learn from this history is that it is quite possible, while "overcoming" the enemy, to actually "become" the enemy. I believe a better response is possible. Not easy, but possible. I'm not arguing for capitulation, complacency or appeasement, only that the response we muster not be isomorphic to the threat to which it is a response.

Yes, of course, Catholicism is just as much a Total Belief System as is Islam. For that matter, the Amish adhere to a Total Belief System too. Really, fairuzfan, your moral equivalency thinking is stunning to behold and would not be believed by sensible folk unless they read your drivel, as I have too many times here at JW. Memo to you: Catholics and the Amish are not a threat to world stability. Muslims are. Why don't you wonder why this is the case far more often than you do?

P.S. You've also dismissed Bertrand Russell's assessment of Islam way too cavilierly. Ditto for Gibbon, Hume, Jefferson, Quincy Adams, Schopenhauer, Renan, Churchill and Fallaci, among others.

Second P.S. My prediction is you'll never learn. Never.

"But it is pure hyperbole to suggest that Islam is solely responsible for these things, or that the poor Spaniards had no choice but to adopt them."

Who made the claim that that was the sole influence? That really is distortion.

"I hold that every man is culpable for his own choices, regardless of influences upon him. Had a rough childhood? Too bad, you've got my sympathy, but it doesn't excuse you for beating your wife. Similarly, the spaniards suffered under and learned barbaric ways from the conquering Berbers, but this does not excuse them from behaving the same way."

Who is exonerating the Spaniards, Portuguese, or anyone else. Also, it is rather childish to assert personal responsibility here, since that is not even what is being dicussed. It is rather the influence of Islam, which was enormous in Spain and Portugal. Also, what is noted is the similarity between the Spanish and Portuquese conquests of the New World. It is not a matter of rising to a higher level, but putting forth a truthful history, and not engaging in a moral relativism based upon ignorance.

Also, you can spare us the quote from Romans. Buddhists, Zoroastrians, and Hindus have suffered similar things from the Muslims. Unfortuntely, it is not something unique to the West.

As far as slavery goes ....

Hey, for most religious groups that was then, but this is now. We need to target those that practice slavery NOW and put a stop to it!

Robert, I'm surprised that it's taken so long to realize that Islam had a huge affect on European civilization. As a woman it's pathetically easy to see. Penguins look remarkably like Islamic ambulatory lumps with faces. Females were second class citizens virtual property of the husband. The societal rationalizations were there. But it's pretty plain where some of the ideas probably came from.

With nobility being educated by Islamic teachers you can bet that a lot of bad habits were picked up along the way.

{^_^}

The western rome empire was formal declare fall by the senate of rome in 475 ace(after common erea) to blame Islam for it fall when Islam only reach Spain in the 700's ace. When Issac Asmion the framous jewess write wrote in his book The Dark Age that learning already die in the western rome empire way before 475 ace and the germany tribes nail the coffin shut on the dead empire way before Islam reach eupore.

What an amazing revelation! I have purchased a copy of the book already. Thank you Jihadwatch!!!

You're obviously not familiar with the Pirenne thesis, mentioned by ebonystone above. And it was 476, not 475, when the last Western Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was quietly put away by a Germanic chieftan named Odoacer, this event being pretty much a technicality. Study some more before you reveal again that a little learning is indeed a bad thing.

Wellingtn, Wellington...

So you agree with me about Total Belief Systems? Great. You're coming around, it seems, at least a little bit. Now when do you plan to break the tough news to Mr. Fitzgerald?

Moral equivalency? Since when? Can you actually produce an example and not engage in continued presumption, which you seem in varying ways and degrees to have been doing since your first post directed at me? If by opposing moral equivalence you mean that slavery and colonialism by Muslims is horrific while that conducted by non-Muslims isn't, then I'm afraid I'll have to plead guilty to the charge, if that's the way we're going to trump up the issue.

Drivel? Well, you seem to have an awfully hard time refuting all of my so-called drivel. So what does that say about your ideas? I believe your first posts to me were in response to four points I put up critquing Jihad Watch's handling of discussion topics pertaining to Islam. You completely ignored 3 of them, as I recall, and did not offer anything remotely approaching a serious refutation about the other. So why would that be?

Yes, there is an alliance of Muslim groups that poses threats to countries around the world, whereas this is not the case with any set of Catholic or Amish groups at this time. Where have I said differently? Why won't you be able to show me, as I know you won't? And how do you know exactly what I wonder or don't wonder about, and to what degrees? And why does the presumption from you simply never seem to cease?

One can produce a list of Western thinkers who are rather admiring of Islam as well. But I'm not taking their word for anything either.

If by my never learning, you mean I'm not going to sign onto spurious ideas that cannot be substantiated by thoughful, balanced, methodical assessment, you are correct there.

Archimedes2 & payingattention,

It's heartening to know that there's at least some sector of folks on here who, while they may well disagree with me in a number of matters, at least are prepared to be reasonably thoughtful in the process. We all need to avoid painting with too broad a brush, myself included. You're a tribute to Jihad Watch.

AtheistexJew has captivated me with his post. I will hang onto it. Does anyone know if there is similar research about the role that Africans played and still play in enslaving their own people?

Can I look forward to a Jihad Watch thread that blames Muslims for the earthquake in Haiti? C'mon, I'm sure with some real thought, effort, and creativity, a way can be found.

There are facts and truths to the article. But there are glosses and things that should have been noted. The Christians invented deicide and torment of the jews long before the muslims. The pagans couldn't understand the devotion to a nameless god of everything.
As a friend of mine notes, he an author upon some of this subject....

" ...It is revealing, more about xtian attitudes toward us (mostly, we and our ethics do not exist) than the other matters, albeit important. For instance, the sense of the value of every human like is a 'xtian concept' [!!], requiring the proper treatment of slaves is an 'xtian concept' as is freedom: no mention of Vayikra, "proclaim freedom throughout the land," or the fact that the identity of Israel as a nation is entwined with the Exodus from egypt and slavery, and the Jewish concept of Divine Providence and Free will and responsibility.
He does near the end refer obliquely to the destructive influence of "Leviticus 25:44" and say that "Jews were the middlemen" for the Viking-Muslim slave trade. So this piece is illustrative in other ways than he intends, but...."

And the fact that the Torah, Talmud and sages of Israel all pointed to the fact that the Christian teaching that demonized, unto satanic meanings, horrible, cruel, vicious mad
deconstructing of human beings who were in the Torah's teachings, merely a conduit for
mitzvot ( good deeds ) and not the rulers of mankind is totally lost in the christian and muslim view of early christiandom and islam, forever, which of course, demands ... submission, of all infidels.

I do recommend people take a look at the new work by Prof Robert S Wistrich, especially chapter one, page 79-106 which reviews the march from pagan greece thru christian
development of jew hatred et all up to the last couple of centuries.

Yes... Islam is beyond savage, beyond hate filled, and Christianity brought us the development of the US federal Republic, and constitution and it's change has been magnificent- Islam has no such change, and no such ability to even head nod to the 'golden rule' where christianity did and does to a very large extent. But there are issues that need clarification and as my friend noted....the sense of the value of every human like is a 'xtian concept' [!!], requiring the proper treatment of slaves is an 'xtian concept' as is freedom: no mention of Vayikra, "proclaim freedom throughout the land," or the fact that the identity of Israel as a nation is entwined with the Exodus from egypt and slavery, and the Jewish concept of Divine Providence and Free will and responsibility.

And more. Much more.

Re: "By the way, we serious Catholics are largely proud of much of the inquisitions that were carried out in the past; don't give credit to Muslims for our rightful accomplishments!"

The Spanish Inquisition was somewhat different than the other Inquisitions. Other inquisitions in the middle ages were initated by the pope, were conducted by Dominicans, and had as their aim the unity of Christendom via getting heretics to recant and rejoin the flock. The Spanish inquisition was initiated by the Spanish crown (Ferdinand and Isabella) almost immediately after the reconquest of Spain from the Moors in 1492, and had as its aim the unity of Spain.

Both were courts, maintained records of proceedings, required testimony of witnesses, offered the accused opportunities to recant, and used torture less often than the courts of secular rulers of the day.

This long list of Jewish involvement in the African slave trade is most interesting as history. But how is it relevant to modern slavery? Which Jews are involved in modern slave trades? OTOH, Moslems are still involved in capturing and holding slaves, especially sex slaves in Africa, as well as women in Europe. In the present reality of the world, not what happened centuries ago, the threat to human freedom is from Islam, not Judaism. But otherwise, fascinating piece of history noted, thanks for references.

Funny how we seem to recall Aceh's Muslims blaming the Boxing Day 2004 earthquake on 'not being Muslim enough', in other words, not beheading enough infidels and beating enough women.

"This is the most important occlusion in Western historiography. One wonders whether the subject was dropped out of shame, fear, or just plain forgetfulness induced by the Medieval era."

It wasn't the Medieval era that forgot: it was the Modern era (which began approximately with the late Renaissance merging into the Reformation); and it took a while -- several centuries, perhaps -- to fully "forget".

Like any major civilizational process, the Western amnesia about Islam is complex and has more than one cause.

1) One cause was posited a couple of years ago by Bill Warner (I don't know if anyone before him thought of this): It could be called a semi-consciously willful forgetting due to a kind of post-traumatic stress disorder on a mass civilizational scale: our collective history of painful and terrifying experiences with hostile Muslims over the centuries -- a full ten centuries really, approximately an entire millennium, a thousand years from the 7th century assaults by Muslim armies that pillaged and occupied vast regions that had been civilized by classical Rome, then by Christian Rome (throughout the Middle East, North Africa, then the Iberian peninsula and then threatening right into the heart of Europe only to be repelled by a coalition of Europeans at the Battle of Tours in the early 8th century), clear through to the 17th century when finally the balance of power began to shift from the Muslim armies to the West, the latter of which embarked upon a spectacular ascendancy of global superiority, exponentially advancing with each passing century after that, while the Muslim world by stupendously stark contrast deteriorated more and more.

Which leads us to the second cause:

2) the Muslim world receded from its principal way of being noticed: its ability to attack and threaten us. By the 18th century, all it could do is nip at our heels, mostly through piracy in the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean, and occasionally into the Atlantic. While this piracy was a major nuisance, it also exemplified how low Islam had sunk by then, that all it could do is attack ships and no longer could launch an actual military attack, the last significant one being at the end of the 17th century.

3) The third cause has only developed relatively recently, approximately over the past 50 years (and increasing exponentially with each passing decade): the shift of the Western worldview into PC MC. It is entirely coincidental that PC MC has become dominant and mainstream throughout the West just when a complex of many different factors have coalesced to galvanize Muslims around the world to revive their original Islamic imperative to conquer the world. The effect of this third cause of Western amnesia, PC MC, is strangely ironic and perverse: for just when our former foe is reviving precisely the behaviors that should rationally cause us to remember why we forgot them and thus who they are (our implacable inveterate Enemy), PC MC comes along and adds a new way to forget them -- through sanitizing and airbrushing out of existence the threat they embody. This PC MC type of amnesia is, of course selective: We are to forget (or, rather, we are to continue to internally censor our thoughts and feelings about the real nature of Muslims and their Islam) Muslims and Islam in terms of any negative stereotypes about them -- a legacy of our shameful racist bigoted past of Orientalism -- and simultaneously we must be mindful to only think of Muslims and Islam in a positive light. This is still amnesia, but adds the wrinkle of "remembering" a false construct, a fantasy hologram: the good moderate Muslim and the peaceful Islam, in place of our continually suppressed memory of the real Islam and real Muslims. PC MC does this by means of a complex paradigm primarily dependent upon the #1 Commandment of PC MC: the White West is evil and should be ashamed of itself, while all Brown People are lovely and wonderful (and if some might do bad things it is always because they were driven to do so in one way or another by our evil oppression of them). Muslims, through their fanatical alacrity and for violence and international ability to deliver it, have elbowed their way to the top of the list of Brown People whom we must respect and never criticize (let alone condemn and concretely oppose). And PC MC would not be able to do this, nor would it be able to have become dominant and mainstream, were it imposed from without: it is sincerely believed by millions of ordinary Westerners and not-so-ordinary Elites among them. The ascendancy of PC MC throughout the West was not a coup d'etat by a sinister cabal: it was a coup de State of Mind.

Man, are you thick. "Total Belief System" is a synonym for "totalitarian ideology." The only totalitarian ideology among major religions is Islam. I was being sarcastic respecting Catholicism and the Amish and you were taunting Hugh by incorrectly equating (hence moral equivalency thinking on your part) the medieval mindset with being a totalitarian ideology, which it wasn't. As I said, you'll never learn.

A sophisticated analysis, Hesperado. Well done. I would add a fourth cause though and it is this: Until the last half century or so contact with the Islamic world since the early eighteenth century had become minimal for those in the West (minus imperialistic reasons for such tangibility) and so who the hell even thought about Islam? Nobody in the West except the occasional curious type, academic type too, had any reason to familiarize himself with man's most wretched religion.

This was touched upon by you in your second point but I thought it deserved mention in and of itself as a separate cause. For instance, the Founding Fathers of America were a sophisticated and sapient group of men, but when they were drawing up the Constitution and the Bill of Rights I doubt any of them considered the effect Islam might have on such documents, not because of willful forgetting, nor because Islam had become just a nuisance, nor certainly because of PC/MC nonsense, but rather because Islam didn't factor into their thinking virtually at all due to total irrelevance.

Thanks Wellington. I do think your point is covered categorically in my second point, though I could advert to it more explicitly. There are many different ways in which my point 2 manifested itself -- among them being that the Muslim world became less and less a part of the world (since, by withdrawing its belligerence, it had not much else to offer the world) and so it receded from the awareness of Westerners for the most part -- at least to a degree sufficient to contribute to this "amnesia" phenomenon. In some ways, as it receded more and more after the close of the 17th century, the Muslim world became sort of like a strange exotic menagerie for certain Westerners to marvel over (and a rare few to actually visit, like Richard Burton or Flaubert or at the turn of the 20th century Pierre Loti) almost as an entertaining fiction far away, for example gleaned through that most popular bestseller of the 18th and 19th centuries, The Thousand and One Arabian Nights.

Added after this story timed out and sent into the JW archives:

After reading this piece I bought O'Neill's book "Holy Warriors" where he expands on this. What he neglects to mention in his piece above is a little tidbit that is relegated to the Appendix of his book. He somewhat casually advances the radical hypothesis that the AD calendar we use has been padded by 297 years, between 611-908 AD, so that the events and characters that fall within that period according to the existing calendar either never actually occurred or existed, or they are incorrectly assigned into this interval from periods either immediately before or after. This means that events that occurred in 610 AD and 909 AD according to current reckoning aren't 299 years apart, as might be supposed, but rather only two years apart. Charlemagne and Alfred the Great didn't really exist, but are fictitious characters.

If a true historical timeline were to be constructed, according to O'Neill, the years 611-908 would be entirely eliminated and the current calendar and historical dates would be adjusted accordingly. Pope Urban II's call for the Crusades would not be 1095 AD, but 797 AD, which would mean it would have been in the form of an immediate counterattack in response to the Muslim invasion of Europe rather than the inexplicable delayed response of four centuries. And of course, today's date would then be, not 2010 AD, but 1713 AD.

O'Neill's evidence for this is based primarily on the absence of archeological artifacts across the entire Mediterranean region that should have existed if these years had also existed, supposed sloppy bookkeeping by biographers and historians of the day, allegations of purposeful fudging of the calendar by early Church chronographers to make Christ's return fall exactly 6,000 years after the Creation as reckoned according to the Bible, and a conspiracy by German kings to pad history to provide legitimacy for their reigns when they broke from Constantinople.

I'm not a historian, but this story fairly made my head hurt, appearing even to me to be so at variance with standard history as to give it a whiff of crack pottery, even though I must admit to being beguiled by the theory. I think I want to hear what mainstream historians have to say about this before taking it too seriously. But if true, it would require rewriting the entire history of the West, and result in the complete erasure from history of the "golden age" of Islam in Andalusia.

Given what is bound to be a controversial reception O'Neill will likely receive on his radical proposal, I wonder if it was wise for Robert to give him a forum here. It seems to me it might have been prudent to hold off until the theory has had a chance to be shaken out a bit. Further, I Also think O'Neill should have made a disclosure somewhere in the two articles he wrote here about this radical theory. I suspect the reason he didn't was because he knew it would be met with skepticism, thus weakening the arguments in the other parts of his book.

Eastview, according to a review at Amazon, by a reviewer who otherwise praises the book highly, O'Neill's hypotheses about the calendar having had three hundred years added is disconfirmed by astronomical studies, which the Amazon reviewer says show that stars are in the correct positions -- and were in the past recorded in positions -- indicative that there has been no spurious addition of three hundred years to the calendar.

Certainly one would think that astronomers would have noticed by now that historical records of star positions didn't change at all during a gap of 300 years.

I read O'Neill's intro to his book. Apart from the calendar hypothesis, the writing looks fascinating and not at all dilettantish.
